I am one-year post-op, so I've seen Dr. Roll a lot. He is a gentle man, confident in his abilities, and totally honest. From the beginning, he emphasized that he could give me a tool to get control of my weight problem, but, ultimately, it was my responsibility to use the tool properly. He thoroughly explains the procedure and risks associated with it. He takes every precaution to ensure your safety (e.g., compression stockings to prevent blood clots). My comfort during the hospital stay was also important to him.

Dr. Roll expects his patients to do what he tells them. It's for our own good. However, he knows human nature and that we'll fail from time to time. Even when my ketones were not right because I had taken in some sugar (they always tell on you), he asked what I did, but didn't berate or humilate me in any way when I confessed to indulging in things I shouldn't have. Dr. Roll takes all the time you need. He nevers makes you feel like you are unimportant in any way.

He has a comprehensive program that requires both a psychological and nutritional consult before surgery. He has a follow-up schedule that he expects his patients to use, including quarterly blood panels to ensure you are keeping healthy. His staff is always pleasant and encouraging.

Overall, I rate him as an exceptional surgeon. His surgical competence means a lot to someone venturing into this program, but he helps you feel at ease throughout the process. Thank God for dedicated individuals like him.

My appointment with Dr. Michael Schweitzer in DC had been scheduled for March 20. I got a call from his office the Friday before to tell me that he was leavng the area. I decided to change surgeons rather than face the drive to Baltimore for surgery and followups. I now have an appointment with Dr. Roll for April 5th.

My appointment with Dr. Roll was moved up and I had it yesterday- March 26. He is a nice personable man. His office personnel are very friendly. Dr. Roll explained the procedure he performs, answers questions (and though I can't believe I did this .. I arrived at the office without my list of questions..this the best I could by memory..which ain't too good.)
I appear to be on my way. Have arranged all appointments with nutritionist..(which is required) and have an appointment for gall bladder sonogram.

I was fortunate that there was a cancellation with Dr. Roll's office and was able to make the appointment today! I had been to see another Dr. in D.C. who I also liked but it was a bit of a hike to get to and from there and the other doctor required a $1000 deposit. Dr. Roll has a great manner in that he's almost "fatherly" in his approach. Very well spoken and knowledgable but still has a great sense of humor... His office staff was Ab Fab! Barbara got my insurance approval in ONE PHONE CALL and was able to call me about the time I walked in the door from the appointment to tell me I had approval and a surgical date set! Now that's what I call EFFICIENT! My head is STILL reeling!

I was given a packet of information (from both dr's) that will be very helpful for me when it comes time to explain this to my family. And was given plenty of time to answer questions. I have had "problems" at the hospital that Dr. Roll operates out of so was a little worried about that but he reassured me that they would take good care of me and that he would make sure of it. I believe him.

My first impression of Dr. Roll is that he is very knowledgeable, he explained the procedure from start to finsh. He took time to answer any questions I had. He has a very calming effect.
His office staff is the best Barbara has been there at every point I ever needed her input or help. I have on appointment with the RD Sallie, she also is extremely knowledgeable of this surgery and was able to answer my many questios

Dr. Roll is very professional. He didn't try to sugar-coat the procedure or the possible outcomes. He kept it plain and simple and made sure I knew that I had to be willing to make at the very least a year-long commitment.

His staff is the BEST! They make you feel like they really care about you and your progress.

Update: Met with Dr. Roll on Tuesday, 12/5 for my pre-op physical. He was very reassuring and comforting. Also, the office staff are great and so compassionate. Dr. Roll made sure I knew about the after-care program, and that this surgery is just a tool and that I have to make a commitment to lose the weight.

My husband and I met with Dr. Roll and his staff, including Sallie, the dietician and we were very impressed with his presentation of the procedure. He took his time to ask a few questions, then he spoke for several minutes about the risks and complications. He also showed us a diagram of the digestive system and how the surgery works. We were both very comfortable with him and my husband feels much better about me having the surgery after talking to Dr. Roll. The staff is wonderful. The thing I liked least was that Dr. Roll spoke about the surgery in a way that made me feel as if he had a script and was it was rehersed (I guess from the number of times he has done it). We did have to wait in the office a long time to get in to see him and we almost felt a little rushed at the end of his talk. Overall I would rate him and the office very highly. Surgical competence is definitely more important but fortunately, in my opinion, Dr. Roll has a good bedside manner as well. I will post follow-ups as I go through the procedure.

I was very impressed with Dr. Roll's knowledge and the manner in which he communicated the good, the bad and the ugly. He is very personable. Dr. Roll presented the pre-op issues, the operative issues and the post-op issues. He emphasized to me that my part in this was very important. I needed to commit myself to this process for at least a year. The pre-op and post-op programs are both extensive and well-structured. I must say that I was especially glad that Dr. Roll discussed the assistance or problems that family and friends can provide or cause during this process. Needless to say, I feel quite confident that he will be performing my surgery!

I was right. He is a great surgeon and a nice man. I would rate him a 10 of 10 (and his staff too).

I had my consultation with Dr. Roll today and i am soooo very relieved and pleased. He sits down and takes time with you. I took in a list of questions and was prepared to ask him these but i found when it was my turn..he had already answered them. When people say he is to the point and direct its true but dont feel that means sharp or cocky. He is very easy to talk to.
His office staff was friendly and efficent. They made you feel welcome and comfortable.
Dr. Roll makes sure his patients understand that he EXPECTS a year long commitment with his follow-up post op care.
HE will NOT operate on smokers...i smoke and i am wrestling with this as we speak. The only concern i have is he does OPEN-RNY with a staple line. I was hoping for a transected pouch. He explained this to me and i am willing to give his expertise in this field the benifit of the doubt. He discussed the risks of surgery but i was happy to hear he has never lost a patient to WLS surgery.
I will add more as my surgery gets closer and after.
