Dr. Roll made me feel at ease from the second I met him.
I have only talked with him once so my impression has not changed.
His office staff is the greatest, they are very helpful and easy to talk to.
At this point, I really can not think of anything negative to say about Dr. Roll. I think he is great.
Dr. Roll will answer all of your questions before you even ask them. After our initial consultation, I was blown away by all of the good honest information that he shared with me.
Dr. Roll is very concerned with after care and strongly emphasized it. He does seem to have a structured aftercare program.
Dr. Roll was very honest about the risks of this surgery but it was nothing that most of us do not already know.
I am pre-op and my over all rating of Dr. Roll and his staff is a 10.
In answer to the question regarding surgical competence verses bedside manner, I would have to say that surgical competence is the most important although bedside manner is a close second

I met with Dr. Roll today for the first time and I was a nervous wreck, I just kept shaking my head and saying ok but, then the more he talked the calmer I became. I think he is a little abrupt but, in a good way. He wants to make sure that you reallize what you are wanting to do is a life changing event. I left his office with the impression that I am dealing with a very confident and knowledgable individual. I also left feeling calm and relaxed but most of all I left with a smile on my face. I met two of his staff memebers today and honestly can't remember their names but, both women were all smiles, polite, kind and very approachable.
Dr. Roll explained that his program is a one year program and that you are expected to follow through with it. He was very forthcoming about, the risks involved, the surgery procedure, what is expected of me and what he and his staff will provide. I feel very confident in him and his staff and recommend him to anyone considering this surgery. On a scale of one to ten (ten being the best) I would give him and his a staff an 8.
It is now 6 days since my surgery and all I can say about my surgeon is he is good but, has a tendency to just shove aside anything you might have to say.

Met with Dr. Roll today. He was very busy with some other general surgery patients and they
wanted to take care of them before he sat down with me. I appreciated this since I didn't want to be disturbed
while talking to the doctor. I found him to be very serious but also with a good sense of humor. He told me
about all of the possible problems that could occur after the surgery from hernia's to embolisms as well as
possible leakage. He said he has not lost a patient in the 15 years he's been performing the RNY procedure. He
said he's only had one patient have an embolism problem but that they got it under control. He explained
exactly what the surgery entailed and that I'd be on pureed food (yummy) for about 7 weeks. He explained
that this was a lifetime change and I had to commit to a full year in his program. He also asked if I was a
smoker and if I was, he would not do the surgery.
Since I am looking at having the surgery at the end of November 2000 or early December 2000 he
recommended I see Sally the Dietician sometime in the middle of October. I'll have 4 sessions with her and he
preferred I have them closer to the surgery date so I will retain the information she will give me. He wants me
to have a Psych evaluation (I can pick the doctor) as well as a sonagram on my gall bladder. That can be done at
any time. However they recommended I not do anything until they get the approval from my insurance company.
I hope to get that in the next week. Barbara will contact me. Overall I really liked the staff and Dr. Roll seems
like a very competent and sincere surgeon. I'm excited about being part of their team!
The journey begins! *smile*

I was very impressed with Dr. Roll's knowledge and the manner in which he communicated the good, the bad and the ugly. He is very personable. Dr. Roll presented the pre-op issues, the operative issues and the post=op issues. He emphasized to me that my part in this was very important. I needed to commit myself to this process for at least a year. The pre-op and post-op programs are both extensive and well-structured.
I must say that I was especially glad that Dr. Roll discussed the assistance or problems that family and friends can provide or cause during this process. Needless to say, I feel quite confident that he will be performing my surgery!

Dr. Roll was fantastic! I had waited over six months to get this appointment. (I had to change insurance carriers.) He brought me and my husband into his office we talked for over an hour. Dr. Roll explained the entire course of events prior, during and after surgery. He seemed to understand my feelings and lack of success in all other methods without me saying a word! Dr. Roll made sure he presented all the info personally and that both of us understood what was going to happen.I plan to meet with his nutritionist on 1/7/00, so I will add to my comments after meeting her.

Everyone is great! Sally the nutritionist is wonderful, and the have a support group that meets monthly. I feel this is a great incentive to see people going through it and those who have made it to their goal! All of the support is great!

Dr. Roll made a special trip to the hospital on my discharge day. I had problems with some of the medication and he came in personally to make sure I was getting a good pain medicine that didn't make me sleep all day. He has kept the nurses in check during his visits. He is very picky about his patients and makes sure they get good nursing care!

Dr. Roll is great! He even called us around midnight on a Saturday because I had excessive vomiting. He really cares about his patients although he is a no-nonsense kind of guy.
Summary - Dr. Roll and his staff are great! Barbara and Arleen make you feel warm and fuzzy. Sally the nutritionist is smart, informative and cares about every patient. He is strict on pre-surgery education and post-surgery follow-up. There is even a monthly support group!
Dr. Roll addressed all of my concerns and fully explained the risks. He is a great surgeon, and truly cares for his patients.

My first impression of Dr. Roll was that he was totally open to all questions and wanted me to be absolutely certain before I committed to the surgery. He provided reams of information on my proposed Roux En Y Gastric Bypass procedure and insisted that he would not operate unless I had qut smoking for at least one month, saw his designated certified nutritionist for at least 4 visits, obtained a gallbladder sonogram, and visited a psychologist to determine my mental fitness for the surgery. He was able to convince my naysaying husband of the benefits of the surgery. His office staff were very helpful and accommodating each time I phoned or visited the office. It appears that Dr. Roll is "straight-shooter." He does not exaggerate or sugar coat and seems to really want his patients to make informed decisions. As for aftercare (and before you even have the surgery) he urges patients to visit the monthly support group (The Staple Club). Also he has established an extensive set of aftercare postoperative visits to his office for all his patients. In my humble opinion, Dr. Roll is extremely experienced and extremely surgically competent. Though his bedside manner seemed to me, sometimes, to be just a little on the gruff side, he will most definitely take the time to answer questions and provide information.

Dr. Roll was very nice at our first meeting. The man I'm dating went with me and Dr. Roll took time to explain what changes to expect. I liked the fact that he's not had a single death from his procedure. He seemed to be very compentent and made me feel right at home. He made the comment that I was NOT a failure at losing weight which I found very uplifting. He explained that the procedure was not a cure all but a tool to help with losing weight. He emphasized the importantance of aftercare and going to the support group meetings.

My first impression of Dr. Roll, is that he is a caring, no nonsense doctor. My wife and I met with him initially not knowing what to think about bariatric surgery. He talked with us for over an hour, explaining how the surgery is only a tool, and only one of many that will need to be used. He insists on a psychiatric profile, as well as 4 visits with his nutritionist. Because I have to drive about 45 miles to his office, the nutritionist agreed to meet with us for two long sessions instead of 4 short ones. Also, because of my extremely busy schedule, the nutritionist agreed to meet with us on Saturday morning. The office staff is friendly, understanding, and most of all efficient. They have handled all correspondence with the insurance company, and had things approved in about a week. Dr. Roll has a good sense of humor, but is very serious about this surgery, and the success of his patients. If you are a smoker, you will need to find another surgeon, ‘cause he won’t operate on smokers - too much risk.
