I just had an initial consultation with Dr. Roll. I could not gather too much in that one meeting. He was very nice and answered any questions that had. I will know allot more later like, after the surgery!

My first impressionof Dr. Roll was that he is very professional, and serious about this. I, as a Rn, can honestly say, that I do not believe that he does it for the $$$.His office staff=of 1, is wonderful! She is supportive, lind, and great @ her job. I would say to people- do not underestimate the mental effect this surgery has on you. You are forever changed. At times, I have found myself wishing I could just be "normal" again , but I realize that I am still grieving and adjusting. He is a great surgeon- not a lot of time for smooshy comfort, but he is one of the original pioneers of this- he is very thorough- you see a Psychologist and continually see a Registered dietician. I am very pleased.

Well, my family and I met with Dr. Roll this week and am very happy. In fact, with everything going on in my life, I ended up going to his office 24 hours early! He was kind enough to see me and very informative. I took a WLS notebook with me with lots of information from this site and others. He even took a few minutes to read what everyone has said about him! My next steps are to meet with his RD and to get a psyc consult. Both appointments are now set up and after I meet with the RD, I should get my surgery date! All of his staff are great. They are sweet and understanding people plus they are smiling and laughing. It just makes life and the visit easier.

Dr. Roll gave me booklets on the surgery and explained it well. He even went into the problems that can occur and his personal success record doing this surgery. Most of all, he stressed that he is part of a team and I am also part of the team and we will be working together for a year. He was also honest about what he feels is a successful surgery (i.e., the risks from obesity are much lessened and what many patients feel is success -- the weight loss only). I and my family really liked him.

I have met with the nutritionist, Sally Myers, and she has given me a lot of information and shopping lists for after surgery. I feel more comfortable about what to do after I come home. I have to meet with her once more before surgery.

Everyone in Dr. Roll's office is really nice.

Very kind and calm, extremely knowledgeable, a "no nonsense" and straightforward kind of guy. His office staff, Anita, Barbara, and Sally R.D., are absolutely the most empathetic, helpful, reassuring, and efficient women with whom I've had the pleasure of working. Very much a TEAM that includes ME. Dr. Roll is very focussed and that can be offputting until you spend more time with him and see how very kind he is. He will NOT operate on smokers. He emphasizes that this is a LIFE CHANGE; and his aftercare is very structured. He went over the surgery with diagrams and answered all my questions without any impatience. He has never lost a patient but he covers the risks involved thoroughly. I rate him an excellent surgeon (judging from my husband's fast recovery and super success) and his bedside manner was wonderful when I was so terrified that my husband would not do well. He's GREAT!

Straightforward, honest, highly skilled. Supportive, articulate, patient.
He and his staff are the best. Barbara, Anita, and the nutritionist Sally make a wonderful team with Dr. Roll leading the way. I could not be more pleased with my treatment, surgery, or followup. We live over an hour away, but I would recommend him to anyone, regardless of the distance involved! He and his staff are tops. He has a structured after-care program, makes sure you understand, complete with diagrams, exactly what the surgery entails, and insists on psych & four hours of nutrition counseling before surgery. The nutritionist, Sally, focuses on just what to expect and how to best meet the new challenges. Best of all, Dr. Roll gave me hope and then delivered 100%! I can't think of anything negative to say about any of it. The hospital, Fair Oaks, provides the finest, specific care -- special beds and everything. I don't even mind the drive because we trust them completely and that's so hard to find!

I had my consultation with Dr. Roll was on 7/19/01. I'm a wee bit on the sensitive side, so I picked up immediately by his tone that he'd given this talk a thousand times.

The basic impression he left me with is that he while he is a bit gruff (in a fatherly/grandfatherly sort of way), he is competent and skilled at what he does. He caught me off guard with the question "Why do you need this surgery? And don't tell me you're sick of being fat -- I know that! Tell me why you think you need this surgery?" I suppose he was looking for something beyond personal vanity in my answer. After I inwardly calmed myself (there goes that sensitivity again), I sited my family history and numerous diet attempts, and he seemed pleased with the answers.

In hindsight, I appreciate his "gruffness." This is major surgery I'm looking at, and I'd better be darned sure about everything that is involved. His demeanor brought that home to me in a way that no website ever could.

Dr. Roll went into great detail about the risks/possible complications of the Open RNY (the only surgery he performs), and had sufficient question/answer time for me and my husband. He explained that I needed to provide a high level of commitment to this journey. He helped me to understand that another diet likely wouldn't work as there is only a 2%-4% chance of a diet working for a morbidly obese person. That strangely comforted me. He anticipated many of my questions and answered them right up front.

After the scheduled portion of our meeting was done, he didn't mind laughing a bit and joking with my husband. I like this man!

I must admit to being a bit thrown by the austere decorating style of his office and reception area (I supposed I've been watching too much TV, expecting a surgeon's office to resemble that of a high-powered law firm or something). It seems petty, but the decor made an impression on me, which is what is asked for here, right? Then I realized that my surgeons decorating style has nothing to do with his surgical skills.

His staff was very warm and friendly. They submitted my paperwork right away and reassured me that they would do their best.

I felt a lot of warmth and caring from the office as a whole (I told you I was sensitive) and I left the office more certain than ever that this is indeed the right decision for me and for my health.

I researched surgeons before I selected Dr. Roll. He came highly recommended, and while he doesn't do laproscopic gastric bypasses, which is what I wanted, he is very experienced. To me, that is what mattered.

When I talked with him the first time, I felt like he was reading from a script-- don't get me wrong, it was a good script, but totally memorized. If I interrupted with a question, he patiently listened and answered my question, then started up again with the script again.

He didn't sugar coat anything as he explained the whole procedure. He waved his finger in front of my face and told me three times "You will never eat normally again," or something like that. I got it. But still, I know this is the right decision for me.

Barbara, in his office is awesome. Even though my insurance (CIGNA) had an exclusion for weight loss surgery, she got CIGNA to approve me! Saved me quite a lot of money.

Dr. Roll is a wonderful surgeon. He has been involved in bariatic surgery for year and years and is direct with all questions and concerns. His staff is spectacular, taking care of all insurance, pre-op info, and any questions you may have that Dr. Roll did not cover. They are timely about getting back to you and never leave you hanging.
Sally Myers, the CPT and Nutritionalist is a God-send. She guided me thus far to know what to expect exactly day after first day post op.
All risks are covered from day one with a plethora of literture. Sally and Dr. Roll emphasize the importance of journeling and working at your new life...
I recommend this to anyone who has a morbid obesity life and need the tool to get healthy.
My surgery went off without a hitch. The hospital (Fair Oaks Hospital) is the best I've ever been in. SOOO professional and caring and very very coordinated!!
Dr. Roll is aces in my book!

He was very easy to talk too. He did not judge me or blame me for my problem.
He seems nicer every time I meet with him.
His office staff is the best! They are so friendly and they always remember me when I call.
The least thing I liked about him was the wait for the surgery.
He is great and worth the wait.

I heard about my doctor before I met him, because a friend of mine had the surgery with Dr. Roll. She told all great things about him. Whe I met him he made sure to get the other patients done so that we could spend plenty of time discussing the surgery.

I would have to say that the fact that struck me the most, was that he never last a patient in over 20 years that he has been doing it. I researched other doctors, and I got scared finding out that one even lost 4 people in one month.

His nurses/assistants are great. Barbara helped me with the insurance part of it.

During our first session, Dr. Roll explained about the good and bad things to expect from the surgery and it seemed like he read our mind. With so much experience he already knew what type of questions his patients had and also gave my husband and I plenty of time to talk to him.
