i was very impressed with him.
my impression never changed.
very helpful and nice.
nothing.
he is very through and helpful.
pain management was my only concern with him...he did not seem very worried about it.
yes!
yes!
very high rating - only problem being that he is not very "pain" management minded.
surgical skill is number 1 priority but bedside manner is a definite plus with such a huge decision as this surgery requires.

Dr. Roll is an up front, tell it like it is kind of doctor. He has a dry wit and a twinkle in his eye. I was very pleased by my first impression. He is very knowledgeable.

My first impression has stuck with me. I feel very comfortable with Dr. Roll and very safe in his hands.

His receptionist, nurse, and dietician are really kind, friendly, and efficient. (His dietician is just too skinny though! It made me mad!!) They have helped me tremendously in getting everything done I needed to do, and have been nothing but polite and helpful.

I honestly did not find anything about Dr. Roll I did not like. His office is very plain and at first I wondered... "How successful can he be?" But he is just an understated man, there is nothing flamboyant about him. He does not need a fancy office to make him feel important.

Dr. Roll insists on a firm commitment to follow up care. If you cannot commit, he is not interested in you. He has a support group, mandatory dietician meetings, and frequent follow up appointments on a schedule. He says the follow up is of the utmost importance in success and in good health post-op.

I am a nurse, so I am well aware of post op complications. Dr. Roll makes no attempt to gloss these over. He is very forthright about the risks and the percentage of the time they occur. He also discusses what to do about these complications should they occur, and he is into prevention.

I was really pleased overall with Dr. Roll. Again, I am a nurse, and I have seen great, friendly, sensitive doctors who I wouldn't let operate on a dog, and coarse, rude doctors who are stellar surgeons. He has a good reputation, his office staff obviously has great respect for him, he is personable and pleasant, yet not overly so. He is very up front and gives all of the information clearly, in layman's terms.

Dr. Roll has not operated on me yet, but I have read many good things about him. I have talked to a few of his patients and they have done quite well. I happen to like his personality very much... I enjoy dry wit and a good sense of humor, combined with an honest, no nonsense approach. He is the perfect doctor for me!

First consultation is in February.

I finally had my first consultation with Dr. Roll on February 5th. The first thing that struck me is that he was quite friendly. He didn't make me feel like a failure for being overweight. He also struck me as very knowledgable. I was worried about having anesthesia and sleep apnea and he told me they had a machine to breathe for me while in surgery and afterwards and that made me feel more relaxed. He also told me he wanted me on a CPAP machine prior to surgery and I had to bring it with me for my hospital stay. I am not on CPAP yet. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea two years ago and couldn't tolerate the CPAP because of nasal congestion. Now I am trying to get a CPAP with the new full face mask that has been invented. I had a sleep study done yesterday, but it was unsuccessful because I could not sleep when the CPAP was put on me. I think I was just very nervous because I know I need this machine, not only because I am severly sleep deprived now, but to have the weight-loss surgery. Barbara (in Dr. Roll's office) is as wonderful as everyone says. I told her about the great things said about her on this site. She is going to try and schedule me for the end of March, because my mother will be able to care for me then. I live alone and after April my mother will have to return to work, so Barbara said she would see if she could fit me in! I should have a date by the end of this week. My next steps are to have another sleep study done (grrrr) I'm scheduled for Feb. 25th, but am on a cancellation list. Have my gallbladder looked at (Dr. Roll says I need this done since I still have mine), see the nutritionist and have the psych. test done. If anyone know of anyone to see in the Southern MD area, please let me know!

I liked Dr. Roll immediately. I felt very relaxed in his presence, and was able to talk to him easily (I'm very shy; this is an important quality for me).

His staff has been very helpful.

I've only seen Dr. Roll once so far, so I can't comment on everything yet. He does stress aftercare, and he requires a psycological evaluation prior to surgery.

He doesn't treat smokers (luckily i'm not!)

My first impression of Dr. Roll was that he is a no-nonsense, lay-the-cards-on-the-table kind of doctor. I appreciated his frankness in telling me I probably wouldn't be around in 15 yrs. or in a wheelchair if I didn't do something about my weight. He was very thorough in explaining the procedure, the benefits, and risks, and reiterated that I would never eat normally again. I was given literature to read. His office staff was very warm and friendly. I learned of Dr. Roll through my boss whose daughter underwent an open RNY just 3 months ago. I read her profile and updates which inspired me. I looked in my insurance's book of providers and there he was! It took me a while to get up the courage to call for an appt. and I would have been able to get in just 2 wks. later. That was just before Christmas and I said it was too soon (I couldn't believe I could get in so soon) My boss' daughter had to wait for months for an appt. I went on January 15th. I would say what I liked least about Dr. Roll is that he doesn't seem the warm, fuzzy type. But that's okay, he is the surgeon, not my best friend. Also, his "talk" seemed somewhat automatic although I'm sure he has given the same "speech" hundreds of times. He told me the hardest part of all this would be the aftercare and learning a new way to eat and no sugar for a year! He stressed that I would be the most important "player on the team" and without my best effort and commitment, it wouldn't be successful. I have the utmost confidence in Dr. Roll and his staff. He told me he had never lost a patient.

Dr. Roll was great. He was thorough, although quick, in his explanations during my consultation. He made me talk and answer questions, rather than just telling me things and not expecting input. He explained the commitment he expected and was clear about my duties in keeping that commitment.

I prefer doctors to be quick and to the point but open to questions. Dr. Roll is exactly that - I am very glad he is my surgeon. His office staff is also WONDERFUL!! Thanks to all of them for being involved with my life!

11/06/01- Insurance approval came in today and I'm scheduled for surgery on Dec 11th. Overall it took 21 days and two sets of paperwork from the doctor (they "lost" the first set)to get insurance approval. After all the horror stories I've heard about I guess I can't complain.
So far everything is going pretty smooth.

Dr Roll, is very sure about what he does. I felt more confident about the surgery just from speaking to him. He does speak as he has done this a 1000 times. His staff is just as nice. So far Im very pleased with thier work.

He was very helpful and answered all my qustions. Staff are great and caring. Dr. Roll stressed the aftercare would be a year. He was very direct about the risk and about how I would eat in the future! Overall him and his staff are great!!
