Harper Hospital (Cori Center) Hospital

The staff at Harper was great. There was a nurse named Angela that was so wonderful. I was lucky to have a nurse that was so kind and helpful. She made me do what I needed to do to heal without making me feel stupid. She explained things. She talked to me, instead of just doing what she had to so, then leaving the room. The nurses at Harper are out of this world. Even nurses that weren't mine helped if they thought I looked like I needed a hand. The hospital was clean. I felt very well cared for and safe there. The people in pre op were great too. I have never had such a positive experience at such a serious time.

Staff was excellent. I could not have been happier. Maria and Sharon were solicitious and caring as my two primary nurses, but the whole wing was friendly during my walks. I did not have one unfriendly experience in the hospital. Even the aid who had to reinsert my IV at 4 AM was friendly. We had a great little conversation about the Lions as he was poking me. I did not always get everything exactly as scheduled (as I thought it should be scheduled), but they followed up on every request. Somehow I never got tired of hearing "how is your pain" even though I heard the question 100 times I think
The facilities are not as nice. This is an inner city aging hospital that is underutilized. It is Part of the Detroit Medical Center, but the ward, and areas that I was in were all in decent shape. I'm a builder who has built and remodeled many hospitals, so I am a critical judge.
The bariatric facilities were not as good as I expected. I saw few very large wheel chairs. My roommate, who was over 450 lbs was not in a bed appropriate for his size. I had accompanied my brother who was over 400 lbs during his operation at St. Vincents in Cleveland. Harper failed in comparision to the equipment for the very large.
In Summary, I expected an average stay in a hospital I knew as adaquate. It was a lot better than that.

I had great nurses, Olga, Binda, Maria. They were the best, even some of the assistants were great! Then I had BAD nurses. 1st shift was HORRIBLE. Where were they? Enough said. I had to stay for three nights, and monitors were beeping constanly thoughtout the night. It would be an hour for the nurses to shut them off!. The monitors would go off every 1/2 hour at least! Twice I needed help to go to the bathroom with IV detanglement and putting on my binder and TWICE no one EVER came to help me. I had to do it myself. Pushing the nuses help button was a waste beacuase I really never go results. I sensed attitude from the people answering the calls too, like I was bothering them.

I read all of the posted reviews about this hospital and was a little concerned that I may have some issues with the staff. However, I found that it is all in how you act with them. If you are a very needy and impatient person, you may have a difficult time there. They are extremely competent, and ensure that you are never in pain, but they are very busy. They made me feel so comfortable, and encouraged me to get out walking and do my breathing to help with my recovery. I loved the fact that they did not bathe me. I know that some people have issues with them not bathing them, but I was much more comfortable having my husband bathe me. I would like to give a big "Thank You" to the staff at Harper Hospital for making my stay very pleasant and comfortable!

PLEASE HARPER!!! GET OVERSIZED STRETCHERS AND BEDS!!!! It is criminal that they should be making so much money off of these surgeries ( although that may change soon) and not spend any money in equipment - xtra large b/p cuffs so that they can get GOOD readings; chairs; beds; stretchers; etc.....Some other hospital may lure away the good drs you have doing the work, Harper, and there will go your profits.
