Mills-Peninsula (COE) Hospital

My only problem with the hospital is that during my pre-op consult the RN said I was not to bring my own medication; however, the hospital did not have my Hormone Replacement medication and I started spotting from being off for 2.5 days. This was discouraging as it has taken a lot to get my system regulated. Next I WILL bring my own med's.

The hospital is old and showing its age. The ward is wonderful in many ways. I had a private room (most are), an amazing thing in this day and age. I had one very bad day and they brought an arm chair that converted into a bed so that he could sleep there. Most of the nurses were good and several were extraordinary. Their aides varied and I relied on my husband for most personal help or to get their attention more quickly. I think this is needed in all hospitals these days, so I would not hold that against them. I had atypical pain and trouble getting it addressed. They kept insisting the self-administered method work. We finally insisted they put the medicine into the drip directly and then I had no problems. I did wonder if that was cost cutting. Self-administration results in fewer costs to the hospital, I believe. I can't prove it but they were oddly resistant to putting the SAME medicine into the IV drip, even though (one of my better nurses had done it), I kept saying over and over that it helped me more. After I talked to the director of the program, I had no further problems. I believe it was because the pain was sooo atypical (I later had a complication unrelated to the surgery that had been brewing, so this may have caused it) that it was outside of the flow of their attention. It does not excuse what happened, but I think they were very good at correcting the problem once they "got" it.

One of the nighttime nurses was very good, very friendly - it was obvious she knew what she was doing. Many of the other nurses (I had 4) were horrible - needing to be called just to get my food, or to get up to walk.
One woman was extremely unpleasant and made it obvious she didn't approve of my being gay with my partner there.
Other than that...
