Confidence to Shine

June 20, 2013

My name is Chris Gould-Hill. I am 40 years old. Twenty-two years ago when I met my husband, I was a slender high school student. Over time, issues with a sibling’s health, plus eventual prescriptions to treat my bipolar disorder, prompted a weight gain that didn’t stop until I had gastric bypass surgery at Franciscan Center for Weight Management in May 2012.

At my heaviest I weighed 295 pounds. I’m a short person. I was just so huge, I didn’t care anymore. I wouldn’t be in photographs. I hardly left the house. I would ask my husband, ‘How can you love me?’ He would say, “I love the person within you.”

Since surgery, I have lost more than 100 pounds. And due to our new healthy lifestyle, my husband has lost 25 pounds. The weight is off my knees, I can wear a 2X instead of a 5X – and I’m still going!

Recently I attended my husband’s company picnic for the first time. People said, “Oh, we’ve heard about you, but never seen you!”  Today I have the confidence to be part of my husband’s life – and also my own.
