Aaaand....THIS is why I am not telling anyone about my surgery!

I have a VSG scheduled for April 10.  I am very excited, but have been reluctant to tell anyone but my husband.  I finally told my boss what I wanted the time off for and he took it very well.  So I was beginning to rethink my decision to not tell anyone about the surgery….and then an article about Carnie Wilson’s second weight loss surgery appeared on my Facebook wall.

It was nothing about the article itself gave me second thoughts; it was all the comments posted after the article.  So now I am back to keeping my surgery on a need to know basis.

 Lol, good point.

But seriously, If someone asks me how I've lost so much weight, I will be honest wtih them.   But by the time I've lost enough weight that it is noticeable, no one will be able to try to talk me out of doing it.  I just don't want to hear all the naysayers' opinions BEFORE surgery.

 I understand.

You don't need the input.

Don't sell you friends and loved ones short. I had my RNY done on 2/22 and I did exactly that. I thought they would think the same way as some of those posters!!! I was totally wrong, they were thrilled and excited for me. Everyone knew I was unhappy with myself and were happy and proud of me for taking the risks.  Then all knew of someone else that had it done and were quick to tell me how wonderful things turned out for them.

People that make rude comments are usually rude people and who cares what they think. They aren't your friends if they truly don't see the upside of what this means. My brother Steve actually said "I've probably added another 20 years on to my life"...and I was most worried what his reaction would be.

Best of luck and congrats for doing what is right for you!

I notice she had surgery 2 months ago.  No wonder she wasn't in a hurry to put that out there.  As a revision myself I completely understand.  I am just now starting to tell some people nearly 2 years out there.
For the most part when I am asked how I lost weight I tell them the truth.  I eat less, I cut out sugar and gluten and I exercise more.  100% honest.  I don't add that I had surgery that helps me eat less and makes me uncomfortable if I eat badly.  I am doing exactly what I would do to lose weight without the surgery, I just have help doing it.  The surgery isn't the reason I have lost weight.  It didn't keep the food out of my mouth.  It has helped me keep from eating badly but it doesn't make the choices for me.

Hi, I am getting my finances in order&passports for me&my husband to go get my weight loss surgery done. And I am so scared to tell anyone too. I just mentioned WLS to my aunt and she said it will take 10 yrs. off your life.I thought what about this extra weight ,and sadness from being overweight won't that take time and quality away from my life? Society does not want anyone to be fat( they think it shows weakness)and they think WLS is the easy way out. But we all know the anguish we have suffered because of our weight &food issues what ever they may stem from. And when some one asks me After surgery what I did to loss the weight,I am sorry to say it will depend on the person and what I can trust them with. An aquaintance will probably get"I jus****ch my portions better now".Someone I trust will get the full story. And it saddends me to say that, but it is the world we live in. Sad but true=(( Protect yourself...........

I just tell people I'm taking care of my health when they comment on my weight loss, and I tell a person about my WLS if I choose to.

I have gotten lots of positive support, and that's what I pay attention to. The negative thinkers can go take a flying leap. It's my body and I've made a very positive choice for myself and my health.

You will discover a sense of empowerment and peace you have never before experienced. You will come to believe you can overcome your challenges and find some joy in this world." Katie Jay

I totally respect each person's right to tell or not to tell, although I don't always agree with the reasoning behind a decision.

I was very upfront about the intelligent choice I made and also made it clear through my actions that total lifestyle change was a must for me to be successful.  If anything, I busted a lot of people's bubbles when they saw how much work goes into WLS.  Several people commented to me that I educated them on what WLS really is.

Knowledge is power.  These ignorant comments made by uninformed, ill-mannered people are a reflection of how little the general population knows about WLS.

I believe I have a responsibility to help educate-and I do what I can.  Keeping it a secret felt shameful to me and I was not nor am I now ashamed of the smart decision I made for my wellbeing.

Wishing you much success.  Write your own story-don't let others do it for you.
