Arthroscopic VSG post op pain... What to expect

Hey Gang,

I am a preop still getting all my clearances in order but it looks like everything is a go up to now. But I decided to worry about post-op pain. I am already worrying about getting my current medications down, hoping I won't have to take so much diabetic medications, but adding a pain medication, OMG, how will it all happen. I don't really want to grin and bear it so I am looking for post op stories of pain, lack of it, or treatment in the face of it.

Your question isn't very clear...are you asking about the pain from a laparoscopic VSG procedure, or are you saying you have arthritic pain now and are wondering how it will be handled after the surgery?

I'm sure some of the VSG folks will chime in if you'll clarify just a bit. You can also post on the VSG board, you'll get more people who are personally experienced with VSG seeing your question.

Speaking as an RNYer, I found the pain to be very tolerable, well controlled by the medications I was given, and brief. After five days I wasn't taking any pain meds at all, and before that only occasionally. I also stopped taking my Metformin a week before surgery (when I started my liquid diet) and haven't needed it since, with blood sugars in the 70-100 range.

Good luck!

I agree with Pam's questions.  Do you mean laparascopic VSG?

My pain medication immediately post-op was liquid tylenol with codeine, it was super easy to take.

Yes I means laparascopic VSG pain. And I thought I was on the VSG board. I guess I haven't figured out how all this works.

So thanks for the info so far.

Since you specifically mention having diabetes, have you researched a different form of WLS called the Duodenal Switch? The DS has the same stomach as the VSG, plus an intestinal bypass that is the go-to surgery for curing diabetes. It's so very effective that surgeons have been doing the intestinal portion on non-obese diabetics with remarkable results. About 98% of diabetics who get the DS achieve total remission, which seems to be permanent...i.e., a cure.

I was wondering if a portion of the DS was being preformed on normal weight people as an attempt to put diabetes into a remission.... Have you come across any good reading material which talks about this?
