work outs...

I usually work out 2-3times a day for about 20-30 each...
Morning work out is 1mile fast walk on treadmill, 50squats,50crunches,50ball crunches and side bends
Evening is a repeat of morning with a 20-30 weight lifting twice a week and bicycle added

QUESTION: will the results be the same breaking them up or will it be better to do everything at one time?

i just read an article this week that said that breaking up a workout over the day is virtually no different than doing it in one chunk.  i can't quite remember where i read it (possibly active.com)...
Where are we going??  And why am I in this handbasket??

right now.  somewhere.  somebody is working harder than you.

I would surmise that doing it all at once would be better for you. Keeping your heart rate up in your aerobic zones for a sustained length of time will burn more calories and fat than working up to your aones, stayinjg there for a few minutes then cool down. Just my 2 cents...

Actually my nutritionist breaks up his workouts every day. He does his strength training in the morning and his cardo at night, and he looks PHENOMINAL!! I break up my 'work outs' by walking 30 minutes in the morning, in the evening and then either a dvd work out or my jogging program.

And I've been seeing results since I started doing it. *shrugs* You can try it and perhaps talk to a personal trainer and see what they say or do some research.

I workout like this sometimes too - a run in the morning, and lifting in the evening, allows me to get the intensity up more than if I lift right after a run (and vice versa).

My uninformed guess :)  would be that from an aerobic standpoint there is not too much difference, other than it takes a while to get your heartrate to the right zone, and you lose that when you break it up, so you have to go longer for the same effect.  From a muscle/strength perspective, it can be less effective and potentially injury causing to lift like that as muscles need to heal to grow stronger, so resting them is an important component of strength training.  If nothing else, I would target different major muscle groups in morning and evening, as you could just be slowing down muscle growth by not giving them time to recover.  Again, just my humble opinion.

I always split my cardio and weight training just for the fact I don't want to be too tired to get in a good workout lifting.

I think it would depend on what you wanted.
If you were working on endurance then all at once would be my suggestion.

However, My doctors office preaches it's better to workout a small amount every day than it is to have a couple large days during the week.  I imagine the same would apply to this.

Generally I have 40-60 minute workouts during the week long enough to run 4-6 miles. And then a longer one on the weekends, long enough to ride 60-100 miles or run 8-10 miles.
Usually a longer run on Sat or Sun and a longer bike ride on the other weekend day.  It just depends on how the ride calendar and weekend looks.

When I throw in swimming it always break up my workouts, just because of the time the pool is available, and my work schedule.  There is no one time during the day where I could get in a swim and a run/bike, or weights at the same time.  There just aren't enough hours available before or after my work schedule.  So I do one before and one after.

The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record!

This is how I am. I break up workouts because I have to due mainly to time constraints.

I might do a run in the am/ lift at night, or whatever. I work really long hours and I just simply do not have a lengthy chunk of time all at once during the week.
