My twins have both worn amber teething necklaces since they were 3 months old (now 19 months old). My family is from Lithuania and it's very common over there for young children to have amber necklaces.

Some stores do carry it, your best bet would be a natural parenting shop (or a cloth diaper store) if you have one in your area. The key is that you have to make sure it is real amber, and the closer to raw and yellow it is the better. You can also use amber as an adult, it is good for all sorts of pain. My husband has one he wears on his knee, and I wear it both around my neck to help with neck and shoulder pain and my wrists because of some joint pain there, DH wears a special one they make at IBF for his knee injury.
You can also check with local jewlers around you, although their prices are probably going to be higher and they are more likely to include other stones with the amber, making them less effective.
The hazlewood IBF makes are also great for colic, reflux and GERD!
