My OB delivered a 4.5 lb baby to a WLS patient of hers....

So I've been struggling up until yesterday trying to get my OB to understand the differences with somoene who has had WLS.....For instance she sent me for a glucose test which I could not do because had I drank the stuff I would of had dumping syndrome, Malabsoption issues etc......like telling me to injest mollasses to combat iron deficiencies....

So to make a long story short ladies I have some interesting news....

I went into her office yesterday and she walks in stating how i need two ultrasounds. Now I dont know about the U.S. But here in Canada basically unless  there is an issue we dont get anymore after our 20 week one. So I say to her is this standard. And she says no but because of my surgery I need to have two more. Apparently she had another patient recently who after showing good blood work, measuring fine, and had her regular u/s , gained normal weight etc. Gave birth to a 4 1/2 pound baby full term. So now she is concerned with malabsoption. And now after being her patient for these last 6 months finally she calls me high risk! Yet Ive been telling her this all along...I was happy and sad. Happy because finally she got it. But sad that it took something like that...

Anyways, thought this was of some intrest to you all....

I've been on this board for a while and almost all the babies born to post WLS mamas have been healthy, average sized babies.

There could have been other issues going on with the mama who delivered the 4 1/2 baby. High blood pressure for instance can result in IUG and low birth weight. I wouldn't automatically jump to the conclusion that it was *just* WLS that caused the baby to not grow properly.

That's not always the case.  My pregnancy with my son was different. It wasnt' anything with me but he was born 4 weeks early weighing 3 pounds.  They estimated his weight to be 6 pounds when I arrived to the hospital.

My daughter was born at exactly 40 weeks and weighed 6 lbs.  They blamed it on my WLS.  but I know that's not the case.  And since when is a 6 lb baby same?  It used to be a normal sized baby.  Now "normal" is around 8 lbs which used to be considered big

of course im not saying we are all gonna have small babies......that would be like saying for all of us who had post op embolisms like myself will suffer the fate of getting one in their embilical cord like that  one woman did  im saying  she didnt listen to me my whole pregnancy this far when i was worried about absorption issues and after miscarrying my last baby post op etc etc  and that she had just delievered that other baby.  she says everything as far as mom and pregnancy was fine  i do not know the woman  and sure there could be many variables like was this her first baby for example  my last two sons were 8lb2oz and then 9lb2oz both preop so i will say a little prayer and hope for the best.

My daughter 16 years ago pre RNY was 8 lbs/1oz at 41 weeks.

My daughter 3 1/2 years post RNY at  38 weeks was 6 lbs/13oz and my son 20 months ago at 39 weeks was 7 lbs/6 oz.

I don't think WLS has as much play into it as other factors as as IUG or Gestation Diabetes.

I am glad that you are finally getting what you asked for in medical treatment even if it might not be necessary. My specialist has been sending me to U/S every 3-6 weeks. He had the same concern that the baby would be small. So far he is averaging normal.. but the 6-7lb at delievery normal. Not the 8lbs that is becoming normal.

But there is always family history to consider too. My mom had me 3 weeks late and I was 6lbs 8oz (I think they had her dates wrong)

So even though WLS might not be a factor if it makes you and the dr feel more secure in the baby's health I am all for it.

I'm glad she is seeing you as high risk now.My Ob from day one even at seven weeks did an ultrasound and when babies were big enough they even started measuring and getting their weight. At twenty one weeks I had one pound twins and now they are both close to pushing two pounds the doctors have told me that's great for twin. Are amazed at how they are growing. Most babies come out at healthy weight but its good in our case for the doctors to start checking early.

May my Angles rest in peace.....
