Ok so after surgery how soon can I drink? When I get the go ahead it is out of those little paper cups right? I need to sip sip sip? Do they check my water I consume the amt or at that point they just want me sipping no fear of dehydrating because of IVs? I am starting to get scared all of a sudden today and I don't have a date yet but I know it's soon. I am scared of dehydration!

I don't have my surgery date yet.  I am scared too, but excited.  I am worried about the drinking thing too!  My mouth drys out very serverely because of my medications.  So I am hoping they will give me something soon after surgery or I won't be able to talk.  Please don't worry about dehydration, I am sure they will make sure you are getting your fluid thru your IV and orally before you go home.

they had the little pink swabs you can put in your mouth to keep it moist so that might help you

I was given ice chips that night. I never had to do a swallow test. The next day I started sipping water. They didn't keep a record of how much I dran****il the catheter was taken out and they stopped my IV. After that they recorded how much I drank and how much output I had. Oh, and we didn't have to use little cups. They gave us little bottles of water and 8 oz cups if we wanted them.

I was given a sponge lodged in ice that I could use to moisten my lips, tongue and the inside of my mouth but it wasn't until the next morning that I was only allowed to sip from these plastic 30ml cups...I was to take an hour per cup...I think it's because they don't want to overload the new plumbing configuration.

By noon the day after that, I was putting away 24 oz pitchers of ice water....

Now, I have no problem getting my fluids in...I take all day to make it happen, but I get 'em in....

I had a minty sponge I could dip in cold water, but no drinking until morning after surgery, after I had my swallow test (my surgeon does 3 leak tests on the operating table, swallow test next day). Then they removed my IV and I was given ice chips, then little medicine cups of water.
I tend to get extremely anxious when I am thirsty and I did fine. I went through a lot of those little sponges though

...yes...there should be drinking in the hospital....of all places, especially there....

Oh...wait...that's not the kind of drinking you were talking about...sorry...disregard...
