Topic: RE: What was it like for the first couple of weeks after surgery?
Let me start by saying that everyone is different! I am one of the lucky ones who had no pain following my Lap RNY surgery almost 2 weeks ago. I was perfectly able to care for myself as soon as I came home from the hopsital the 2nd day after my surgery. I don't have small children that need constant care, so I was free to take the time to rest as needed. My youngest children are teenagers, so I just needed to get them off to school and make some meals.

Do you have a friend or family member that you can count on to help out if you need it? Nobody can tell you how quickly you will recover. Good luck!!

Biotene mouthwa**** is a long time before you can drink anything. Your mouth feels like a dust bowl . I used the Biotene with the mouth wiping sponges that they gave me (worked much better than water). Biotene is a moisturizing mouth wash.

Good Luck!!

Topic: RE: Pain after bypass?

I am one of the people that has had no pain..... I had Lap RNY 10 days ago and have had no pain at all. I can only say that for the first 5 days or so my abdominal muscles felt like I had done too many sit-ups. I slept easily, and even on my side after a few days.

I am also getting in all my fluids (60-80 ounces a day) and 72 grams of protein a day.

I am not a trouper when it comes to pain and don't have a high pain tolerance. I am thrilled with how easy this has been, but also wish that I would hear from others that they had it this easy, and were successful!

Good luck to you with your journey. I would suggest that you call your insurance company and ask them what they cover and what their conditions are.

Sure fire way for me is to drink from the wrong side of the glass.... really! Lean over the glass so that your chin is over the liquid and sip from the wrong side of the glass. AND call your surgeon, hiccups at this point can be serious!

Topic: RE: Last Meals (especially holiday ones)
I planned to have my ONE last meal before surgery of Chinese food, fried rice, fried shrimp, crab rangoons, chicken fingers, all the 'bad' stuff. I never went for the soups and spring rolls, etc! Well the time came to have it and I decided that I had worked too hard to lose the 40 lbs that I did before surgery! So, I skipped the last meal and had my tasty piece of baked salmon before bowel prep day. No regrets.

I had my surgery the same day you did and I  don't start puree until this coming Friday. I know that all Doctors are different, but you might want to go back to just liquids and call your Dr for advice. Good luck!

I didn't have any, but then again, I think that I am the only fatty in the world that doesn't like candy!! It has never been something that I liked or craved. Good thing since I am only 5 days out!

I spent the day at pre-op 'class' and the hopsital doing the final pre-op testing and interviews. So, after being really good and not straying even once since August 11th, I AM GOING OUT TO DINNER tonight!! I won't however blow all my hard work and eat really bad stuff. I am planning on salad, Prime Rib and steamed veggies.

Sunday I have to do the big flush (prescription Meralax) and be at the hopsital at 5:45 Monday morning for my 7:30 surgery.

Thank you, my OH friends for all the support that you have given me and will in the months and years to come

Topic: RE: would u consider rny if u just wanted to lose 70lbs.???
My answer is yes, for ME. I started this journey needing to lose 105 to get to a reasonable goal. I may decide (or my body may) to lose 15-20 more than that. I have lost 33 pounds so far in pre-op and am now at 212.

I have actually lost all of the weight 3 times before, and gained it back, plus more. I will use this additional tool to take it off, and KEEP it off this time. I also have some knee problems and arthritis issues that have severely effected my life.

That is a decision that you need to make for yourself, with your Dr. A BMI of 42 is morbidly obese. Ask yourself.... am I able to take it off and keep it off? Do I need this surgery and the 'tool' it provides to make it? The answers to these and other questions will help with your decision. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Topic: RE: Wii fitness - anyone using one?
I love my Wii Fit! It really works for me (and my home recumbent bike) to work out at home before I start my day. I used to go to the gym, and probably will again, but getting sweaty and showering BEFORE I leave the house works so much better for me.

The only thing I hate about the Wii Fit is the groan that it makes when I get on the 'scale" LOL! Sad, but true!!

Topic: RE: BeneProtein Update
Well, after asking opinions on BeneProtein and getting less than stellar reviews, I decided to try it anyway.

I bought a can and added a scoop to SF pudding and mixed well. No bad taste at all. Then I made a puree of chicken and FF gravy in the Magic Bullet and added a scoop of the BeneProtein to that. Again, no bad taste at all. Since then I have been adding it to several other things and can't taste it at all. Hopefully that won't change after my surgery next week! A scoop is only 6g of protein, but that is 6 grams that I wouldn't have gotten.

Just in case anyone else was wondering about it :)

I agree that it should be considered exercise!! I absolutely LOVE beef jerky, and the sodium doesn't bother me at all. I am really going to miss it for a while after my surgery next Monday.

I am no expert on protein shakes, but reading the ingredients it says that it is soy protein and has 23g of sugar. Not so good, I think.

Thanks Steve :)

So far (pre-op) I don't mind the protein flavor at all. I buy the Body Fortress at WalMart and am happy with it. We'll see what happens after surgery.

Topic: RE: BeneProtein ?
The question that I have is about BeneProtein..... I have heard that this is a good powdered protein to add to foods. What is your advice on it? Is it unflavored? Is the scoop size smaller than the protein shake scoops?

I have tried adding the protein shake powder to a serving of pudding or yogurt and it is just too much powder. I was hoping to find an addative that is less bulky without lessening the protein.

I'm getting ready for surgery in 2 weeks and want to be as ready as I can be.

This board is wonderful! Even though I don't post too often, I read every word and think that you are ALL wonderful and are a great inspiration to me. Thank you!!

Hummmm.... that makes me wonder. Are some people more prone to hair loss than others? I have had 5 children and had no hair loss. Suffered badly with depression, had some (minor) surgeries, and gone on bad nutrition diets that I lost a lot of weight quickly and never lost any hair. I hope that this a sign that I won't lose hair after RNY in 2 weeks FROM TODAY!!! Wow, I just realized how close it is .
