Week 36 Post-Op Update

Oct 20, 2011

No change in my weight this week, still holding at 248 Lbs but that's always the pattern with me. Lose, hold, lose a bit more, hold, hold some more, sometimes hold even more (mini-stall), & then lose again. That's my month, every month, in a nutshell. So today I experienced a very odd and fun NSV. My wife had her VSG surgery back on the 3rd of this month and today was her 2 week post-op followup with the surgeon. She had the same surgeon as me, Dr Fang. So we went to the appointment and long story short, when Dr Fang came into the exam room to see my wife he introduced himself to me and shook my hand as though I were the tag-along husband. It was so funny! My own surgeon didn't recognize me! I looked at my wife and laughed and said "he really doesn't know who I am does he"? Poor Dr Fang looked puzzled so I pulled up my shirt and said do you recognize me now? He smiled and said "oh my, you have lost a ton of weight"! Then he went on to explain how differently my face looks now in his defense. It was truly a priceless moment! To think that my own surgeon doesn't even recognize me 8 months and 155 Lbs post-op, LOL!..

Week 35 Post-Op Update

Oct 13, 2011

What roller-coaster ride this month has been! Last month on my surgiversary (the 10th) I was 9 Lbs heavier than I am today. Along the way I actually had gained weight and then went into a mini-stall for nearly 3 weeks. Now I've lost 6 Lbs in a week (lotsa pee pee). So the end result is that as of today the scale says a 248.0 Lbs! I'm so happy that month is over!
Talk to you all next week, Take care... Craig

Week 34 Post-Op Update

Oct 06, 2011

I'm still doing good but I'm in a bit of a funk this week. The scale still says 254 Lbs (a good thing!). I've lost over 150 Lbs to date and I'm happy with that, but at times I still feel as though I should be farther along in my weight loss. Many people on these VSG boards are completely done and are at or below goal by the time they have hit 7 months post-op. I'm now nearly 8 months post-op & still have about 2-3 months to go to be at goal (assuming I can loose 8-10 Lbs a month). I realize that 11 months to loose 180 Lbs is still a pretty lofty goal.. as goals go, but I also know that I could have done better had I been stricter with my diet and exercise. I'm starting to cave into my head hunger and I'm also skipping to many of my bike rides. I see myself repeating old habits that I wish I could drop forever and this is where the source of my "funk" comes from. The weather is cooling here in AZ now so hopefully I can get back into a routine of exercising at least 4 days a week. The old habits of eating things I shouldn't worries me. I'm not sure how to break free of crunchy carbs permanently (crackers, popcorn, cheese puffs). I know that I have improved greatly in my struggle with my food addiction, but not being perfectly in control of it worries me. It worries me because I never want to go back to where I was and I know that those bad eating habits are the path to ruin! I'll just have to keep my head down and keep pushing forward. It's all I can do right?
Thanks for all the support OH friends! TTYS... Craig

Week 33 Post-Op Update

Sep 29, 2011

It's been another great week. The Lbs keep dropping and the scale now says 254 Lbs! I earned my 150 Lb Century Card this week and when I think about it, to loose 150+ Lbs in less than a year seems unreal to me. On a somewhat negative note, now that I'm healthier than I have been in over 20 years I'm also un-insurable! Yes, I have been declined insurance by both the major medical carriers United and Aetna due to my "pre-existing condition"... WLS! WTF!... I don't take any meds, my BP is perfect, and I have the bloodwork of a toddler but I'm somehow high risk now! So as of 10/1 I will be among the millions of Americans that are anxiously waiting for 2014 to come and the ban lifted on patients with "pre-existing conditions". Just hope my health holds up for 6 months so I can qualify for the PCIP insurance (more discriminative nonsense best left for another post, another day).
Take care... Craig

WOW.. That was fast! Century Card Time Again :)

Sep 24, 2011

OK so the ticker emergency was short-lived. Soon as I dropped all that excess water weight I was carrying from last weeks side trip into prepared foods, my weight dropped like a stone.. from 256-257 down to 254 Lbs!!! Now I can comfortably claim the weight loss, adjust my ticker down, and claim my reward.. My 150 Lb Century Card!!!!
I'm so happy! .. Craig

Week 32 Post-Op Update

Sep 22, 2011

This week marks the first time I have ever changed my ticker in the wrong direction
I was on a real nice weight loss cycle and then.. the baby's birthday, out of town company, lot's of eating out, and too many salty prepared foods entered the mix. I kept my calories down to within 300-400 of my daily target but my metabolism still couldn't stave off the water retention that comes with eating more calories & mostly more carbs, along with more sodium. So although I did see 256 Lbs on my scale for about a day, I was unable to hold it and now have readjusted my ticker back up to 257 Lbs. I really want to see that 256 number hold steady because that would mark 150 Lbs of weight loss for me. I have every intention of seeing this minor setback resolved, hopefully by my next blog entry in 7 days. Wish me luck!

Week 31 Post-Op Update

Sep 15, 2011

So last week I was excited about being in a nice little weight loss cycle. This week I'm totally PUMPED! over my progress. The scale now says 257 Lbs & a new BMI of 35.8!!! I really feel like I'm "in the zone" on this eating and moderate exercise lifestyle now. What makes it all the more pleasing is how well my body seems to be reacting. My energy is up, alertness is up, motivation is up, and I just feel like I can do almost anything I want to now! My upper back has been hurting now that my weight has gone down so significantly (149 Lbs in 8 months!!!). So I'm back to the chiropractor for the first time in 25 years. Seen him 3X so far and all I can say is OUCH! Hope it gets better soon.  I have some pics of me and the baby taken today during her birthday celebration (2 years old!). When I look at myself in the photos I can't actually believe it's me! Guess I gotta work on self image a bit more? I'll post updated pics soon.

Week 30 Post-Op Update

Sep 08, 2011

WOW.. 30 weeks since surgery already! So much has changed, and so quickly since my surgery on Feb 10th 2011. Tomorrow is my 7 month surgiversary. As of two days ago I weigh 261 Lbs. I haven't weighed 261 Lbs since sometime in the early 90's (1993 or 1994). I am now 36 Lbs from goal and I still can't believe how quickly I've achieved this all thanks to Dr Fang, my VSG, & the sheer grit and determination I have had to finally beat this obesity thing down! I will continue to fight the good fight, enjoy my rebirth, and reach my weight loss goal well before my one year surgiversary. What more can I say right?
Catch ya next week... Craig

Week 29 Post-Op Update

Sep 01, 2011

This week the scale says 265 Lbs! I can't hardly believe that there's only 40 Lbs to go! Back when I had 180 Lbs to go it seemed so impossible to achieve and now here I am 40 Lbs from goal in only about 7 months!!!! I feel great and I'm truly thankful for my new lease on life. I'll keep it short this week and hopefully have more to say next week.
Still Luvin' My Sleeve!

Week 28 Post-Op Update

Aug 26, 2011

Sorry I'm late on this post. Completely forgot last evening! So it's week 28 now and the scale says 267-268 depending on the time of day I step on it. The weather here is relentless, 110+ every day! So walking and bike riding has been off the plate for nearly 2 weeks now. I tried to ride the stationary bike but it's just not as much fun as the open road. I went to see my PCP Dr this AM for a followup. He was really impressed with my 140 Lbs of weight loss and said it was "amazing". I told him I'm not done yet. Gotta get out of the obese category and into the overweight category (below 30 BMI). The Dr asked me "when again it was that  I had my bypass" & I reminded him that I had my VSG on Feb 10th, and reiterated that I had a restrictive procedure and not a malabsorbtive procedure. He said "Oh, OK". Maybe it's just me but it seems like people tend to downplay all the hard work that goes into loosing weight post WLS. Especially if you have an RNY or DS since the malabsorbtion is like a stop-gap for those with no willpower. Anyway, I may be in a mini-stall right now but I'm sure that as soon as I can get more active that will change.
Talk to you all again soon... Craig
