Discouraged with pre surgery diet results!

Jan 30, 2009

Today is Friday 1/30/09 & I've been trying to "diet" since my first consult with MD 11/21. I initially lost 12 lbs only to regain/lose it since then! My doctor didn't give me a specific amount of wt to loss prior to my PAT's which is 2/18--he just said he wanted me to follow the pre diet plan the nutritionist gave me & be less weight than I was 11/21. According to my scale, I am 8 lbs less than that wt but I'm still worried. I know I have 3 wks until I see him again & hope to at least lose 15 lbs--that's my goal! I also know I will lose more wt pre surgery because my Doc has his patients do a 10 day liquid diet. I just want to follow the rules & don't want my surgery to be postponed for any reason...so just trying to keep positive & take things one day at a time!!
Another challenge is the Cpap machine! I still believe the setting is too high at 12 because I can not catch my breath when it is at that setting. I am going to call Resp therapist to decrease it to 10. I have only been able to wear the mask while sleeping for a total of about 60 hrs--I need 160 by PAT's & 200 by my surgery 3/2...very stressful!!
I'll check in again later. Hugs,
Diane

Have my dates!!! Yeah!!!

Jan 13, 2009

Tues 1/13/09

Hello...it's been awhile since I've written...got off track over the holidays...lost the 12 lbs & gained most of it back! THIS is so normal for me...I'm good for a few wks & then back to my old ways! This is why I need & want this surgery!!
But Great News--I finally got my PATs & surgery dates!! Pats is  Wed 2/18 & surgery is Monday 3/2. I was offered a few dates in Feb but decided it was better for me to wait an extra 2 wks. This way I can clock my 200 hrs on the cpap, get my finances in order & get all my paperwork handed in at work for short term disability. I've waited this long...so 2 more weeks will be fine. I can also get re focused with my pre surg diet & get my butt back to the gym!!
I also received my cpap machine today also (it was a very productive day all around!!) so I'll begin using it tonight! I'll keep you posted over the next few wks & update again on my wt loss pre surgery!  Hugs,
Diane

Sleep study

Dec 23, 2008

Ok...I had my cardiologist appt Mon 12/22...he did an EKG & echo right in his office & said I didn't need a stress test...he is approving my surgery:)
I also went for my 2nd sleep study Monday nite 12/22 & slept with the cpap mask on all night. I have to say...it was not very comfortable, but I tolerated it well & actually felt great when I got up in the morning...so maybe this will be an improvement & actually make me feel better during the day:) Things always work out for a reason!
I will now just wait for the sleep study results & then get fitted for my new mask. Then I will get my surgery date (I hope) as I clock 160 hrs before going for my PATs. Still hoping for 2/23/08 as my date. I'll keep you posted!
Hugs,
Diane

Frustrated at the LONG process

Dec 18, 2008

Well...I finally received the results of the sleep study (I had to call the center again for them--they never called me)...they determined I have MILD sleep apnea. But Dr. Boe wants me to get a cpap machine due to my high BMI. He said the intern who will see me at PATs probably won't approve me for the surgery unless I have been using the cpap. Dr. Boe was kind enough to call me back to talk to me about it all. He said it would be in my best interest to go for a 2nd sleep study (to a different sleep center of course!!) & be fitted for the mask. He also said I can wear the mask while awake watching TV...esp since I don't sleep for long periods of time. I need at least 160 hrs of recorded time using the machine prior to going for my PAT. So...I'm a little bummed at the delays. But I'm taking his advice--I know it is for my health & he has my best interest in mind!
So...off I go on Monday 12/21 for another study near my home. They said they will have me sleep 2 hrs without any cpap to be sure I have sleep apnea then if I do...they will have me wear the machine the rest of the night. Still hoping for surgery date of 2/23/09...this will allow me to continue my diet & lose more wt, continue exercising to get stronger, wear the cpap, fill out & hand in all my paperwork for STD at work & get some bills paid & my finances organized prior to going for PATS. So...I know it will all work out...one day at a time:) I'll keep you posted!

Gained wt being on a diet--go figure!!

Dec 15, 2008

Well...I've been on this 1500 cal pre surg diet since 12/5...lost 12 lbs first 5 days...now back up 4 lbs!! This is the main reason I hate dieting!! Always see-sawing...very discouraging! This is where I usually give up...& begin eating poorly again! But I really do want to lose some wt pre surgery! I know there could be many reasons the wt is back on...water wt gain, haven't exercised in a few days, too many carbs, that time of the month...but it's still frustrating! This has been my life...diet & lose a little...then give up & gain gain gain & diet again! So sad what I've been doing to my body! (& mind & soul!!)
STILL no results of the sleep study & I had a migraine yesterday so I could not go to the gym or keep my cardiology appt...so I had to reschedule that for next week. I try & take 1 day at a time! Keep you posted....

Insurance Approval Received 12/12/08!!!!

Dec 14, 2008

Hello Everyone...I received my insur approval letter Friday 12/12--so happy!! I am STILL waiting for the results of my sleep study...will try calling them again in the morning. If it is "normal"...I will call the clinic to see about a surg date! I may need to schedule into Feb due to my work schedule. I am hoping for 2/23/09 if Dr. Boe is available that day...then I will be able to take 6 wks off work without any problems.
Again...struggling with the diet given to me by the nutritionist...it's just so easy to give in to temptations...but I'll be back on track again tomorrow--back to the gym & back to writing everything down & eating "right"! Keep you posted!

My final appt is next Mon with the cardiologist...then it's just the waiting game with the sleep study center for results & my insurance approval so I can get my date!!!  I will keep you posted!

Update

Dec 07, 2008

12/7--update...I completed my sleep study last week (not easy to sleep with all the wires hooked up!) & was told to call the sleep center this Wed for the results.
I also had my psych appt last week (think I passed, lol) & joined Curves Gym Friday (and also worked out Sat too). I also began my pre surgery diet according to the plan the nutritionist gave me at my consult & have dropped 12 lbs since my consult weigh in on 11/21! Very happy about that & just taking 1 day at a time! I'm trying not to look at the whole picture since I get overwhelmed at the amount of wt I actually have to lose...so each day is a win for me!
I also had a CXR on Friday which the pulmonologist needs for my appt with him this coming Wed. Back to the gym Monday, Wed & Thurs this week & planning on attending the support meeting at the Barix Clinic on Tues in Langhorne. I'll keep you posted on my progress & appts as I go along! No news yet about insurance approval!!

The beginning of my journey

Dec 01, 2008

Hello...12/1...I had my consult with Dr Boe at the Langhorne clinic on 11/21 & am currently awaiting approval from my insurance to have the bariatric surgery.
I have begun to schedule the pre surg appts Dr. Boe wants me to have...I am going for an overnite sleep study 12/2 to be sure I do not have sleep apnea and I will get a CXR this coming Thurs 12/4.
I have appts with the cardiologist, pulmonologist & psychiatrist this month.
I have viewed the online store & am trying to read all I can about the surgery, pre & post food allowances & have ordered an exercise tape especially made for surg pts. I am also joining Curves this week & beginning the diet given to me by the nutritionist while at my consult.
I'm hoping to lose 10-20 lbs & increase my activity level prior to my surgery. I want to do as I'm told to insure the best possible results! I want the weight off & want this to be my last attempt at "dieting" ! I want to learn about nutrition & make it a part of my life forever!! I also plan on attending the support group for pre surg patients next Tues here at the Barix Clinic in Langhorne.
Thanks for reading & all comments &/or suggestions are welcomed and appreciated!! Hugs, Diane
