I wish you a happy & healthy New Year!!

Dec 31, 2008

Well, its' January 1st, 2009 and I feel good.  I am 25 lbs down from the start of this adventure, I joined a local gym for only $99 for the year and I am enthusiastic about the big change in my life, me!

I am putting together a schedule for my daily routine so I don't go off track in the months to come.  I'm sure if I do this with time I will do it without even thinking.  I'm going to put it on my fridge so I can check it off as I go.

So, hello 2009 and again, I wish you all a Happy & Healthy New Year!

Twelve days since my VBG and....drum roll please!

Dec 31, 2008

I am happy to report everything is....... WONDERFUL!

I went to Dr. Valin's office at 10am this morning for my 2 week check-up.  I arrived five minutes early so I trotted off the the bathroom to go potty...since I've been up since 6am and I was doing a lot of drinking with my 2oz of Protein Shake and water.  I went to the waiting room and was called in on time, as usual.  Put my jacket and purse on the chair and kicked off the sneaks to get on the scale.  I'd rather have stripped down bare ass naked though!  So, I got on the scale and......273.4

Wahoo...and another hip-hip-horrah for totally sticking to the liquid stage and being advanced to the next stage which is puree.  Well, since I was still drinking water on the way home from the doctor I waited until noon to have my first puree meal....I made a scrambled egg with American cheese, used ICB it's not butter spray in the pan.  To me it didn't look like much.  So, I began to eat s-l-o-w-l-y trying to chew 25 times before I swallowed, kinda hard with an egg...think I got to about half the count before I swallowed.  Surprisingly, I ate it over 15 minutes and couldn't even finish 1/3 of it before I burped, one sign to stop eating (from what I read in other blogs, if I'm wrong let me know).  I waited about five minutes and took a little more and was done.  Thank goodness for the dogs, put it on the floor and was a real treat for them!  So...that is the story of my first meal of puree.

To say the least I am ecstatic with the loss!  I know that I still have a lot to do but during the past week I have been googling like crazy for recipes for the puree stage.  I've come up with a lot of ideas.  I'm going to lay out my daily routine on here to keep track and also to help anyone who is a the earlier stages and was confused, just like me.

So, I am on my way!!  In another two weeks I can start the next stage which is soft food.  Then I have another doctors visit on February 6th.  Have  a great day!

My husband seems upset and depressed!!

Dec 29, 2008

My husband spoils me when he cooks.  He is a talented cook who loves to experiment and go online for ideas and tweak them to be better.  Since I have had my surgery he has not cooked one meal for anyone in the house.  He told me last night that "their is no reason to cook if you're not eating".  In a way I feel bad because it's something he enjoys to do but I know he will enjoy cooking things for me after I get done with the puree food and get to the soft stage.  He likes challenges so I plan on giving him a challenge to cook me something once I get on the soft food stage.  Although I won't be consuming two extra large plates of whatever he made.

Just because I can't eat as much as I used to I still want to taste something wonderful, right!  So what it will be only a few teaspoons.  Now I am on the feat to make my husband understand he is going to have to cook something for me very soon....maybe Shepherds Pie?? Casserole?? Spinach & Cheese Pie??  Ugh, hopefully he won't be so depressed over this because I'm feeling GREAT!!

Getting better, slowly.

Dec 28, 2008

Well, I must say that I'm feeling 100% better than last Monday.  I stopped taking the pain meds and moving along a lot better.  I finally was able to sleep on my side comfortably in my own bed, making my husband very happy that I'm no longer on the couch with all the pillows in the house.

I am anxious to see Dr. Valin on Wednesday for my first appointment to get weighed in - why is that number so darn important to me?!?!  My hubbie bought me the Wii for my birthday and I picked up the Wii Fit in November, though it sat in the box for awhile but with the motivation of my kids we opened the box and then started using it.  We each created the cartoon characters to look as close to us as we could figure out....mine is hysterical with a small mole on my upper lip.  I started out at 294 on the Wii although at my first dr appointment I was 298;  when I weighed in the day before the hospital I was 288; I got on Wii yesterday and it told me I was 276!  Is this possible?  Can it really be in a negative number with double digits already??  This is exciting!

GOOD BYE 290'S
GOOD BYE 280'S
HELLO 270'S !!

Well, I've been on-line all morning searching for the puree recipes and found two awesome sites.  Of course, I will share it with you!   theworldaccordingtoeggface - This is a girl who is hysterical and is a fellow NY'er which makes me understand her totally.  hungry girLs - cool site that has the good way compared to the bad way listing portion sizes and all the breakdown of it's content.

Okee-dokee..Going to have my snack now, planning on going upto West Haven Beach to walk today.  I feel that my balance is better and I can do it!  I have my son's cd player and my Rob Zombie cd which I got for xmas (okay people don't be scared that I listen to heavy metal music; I listen to everything except Rap and Gospel).  My hubbie is going to come with me since I'm still not driving.  I'm also planning to join the gym this week since Planet Fitness in Orange, CT has a deal for $99 for the entire year with no sign up fee.

Have a great day!!`

It's been a rough ride...

Dec 24, 2008

Well, I had surgery on Friday, December 19th.  I arrived at the hospital at 10am and went into surgery about 12:45.  I think I woke up in recovery about 4:30, was in severe pain with my left incision having a spasm constantly so once I got the hit of morphine off to lala land I went.  Maybe around 6:30 I was brought to the 5th Floor of St. Raphael's.  When they were wheeling me out their was my wonderful husband.  It seemed like I left 5 minutes ago!   Almost ran into a BIG problem when I could not "P".  Ugh, so they gave me one more bag and I went off the the bathroom, hot water running praying my hardest.  Thank God I had "some' in that lovely pan or else I would have had to get a catheter - yuck.

So, I did walk a bit with husband in hand since I was not stable.  From the meeting they said to walk so when I did I went three times around the nurses station at a time.   I don't think I slept much maybe hour nap and then up for a few hours because of the pain and noise from other patients, but I expected it to happen.  Morphine was my friend.  So when I was up and about in pain on Saturday am they finally moved a chair into my room to rest which was a big help.

I went for my mri and drank my lovely dye around 9:45 - was cleared about 1/2 hour later and started Stage One - water about 11am.  Right before that the nurse gave me a little sedative for the "removal of the tube" since my co-worker said it was the worse thing about the surgery...well that took about 5 seconds to remove and off for drinking the water a little while later -- I made sure to take is very s-l-o-w.

Then Stage Two - broth, which I'm not sure why I took that first since it was the beef broth.  Told the nurse I was feeling nauseous and said I should do the jello, the broth was not a good idea.  Okay, so after an hour I got down 2oz and felt okay.  I still was unsure how I was going to leave the hospital since I was feeling horrible.  About 2:30 the nurse came in to remove my two needles and then by 3:30 my husband wheeled me out to the car, went for a scary icy ride home - at least I am only 10 minutes away from the hospital!!

I was on the couch Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights -- finally went upstairs to my bed Tuesday night.  I guess it was better on the couch since I could be propped up more and not feeling so uncomfortable.  My husband slept on the love seat watching over me -- don't know what I would do without him.  He kept me hydrated, made sure I took my vitamins, pepsid ac, pain meds and all my meals.  He made me a wonderful chicken FF broth with egg whites for  a wonderful egg drop soup.  I could not eat all of it but had plenty for another two or three meals for the next few days while he was at work.

I want to thank my husband for being so wonderful, and supportive.  I LOVE YOU BEARS!!

Preparing for my surgery, tomorrow.

Dec 18, 2008

Last night I went for the 2 hour class at St. Raphael's.  It was very informative and helpful.  I received a call that I'm scheduled for a 10am arrival tomorrow morning.  My hubbie is calling out sick to be with me tomorrow after my surgery.  I am all prepared with my liquid supplement, my vitamins, my 1 oz. cup and a bunch of cd 's to help me relax for my hospital stay.  I'm not nervous but anxious.  Tomorrow will start the beginning of a life change.  I'm planning on taking a pic of myself tonight and to do so every month on the same date to visualize my progress, which Chris Lodi said with help the "mind" not feel like you're still fat after loosing a lot of weight.

Stay tuned!

Top 10 Mistakes to Avoid (Copied from a very smart woman!)

Dec 05, 2008

1st Mistake:  Not Taking Vitamins, Supplements, or Minerals Every WLS patient has specific nutritional needs depending on the type of surgery you have had. Not only is it a good idea to ask your surgeon for guidelines, but also consult with an experienced WLS nutritionist. Understand there is not a standard practice that all surgeons and nutritionists follow in guiding WLS patients. So, it is important to do your own research, get your lab tests done regularly, and learn how to read the results.  Some conditions and symptoms that can occur when you are deficient in vitamins, supplements, or minerals include: Osteoporosis; pernicious anemia; muscle spasms; high blood pressure; burning tongue; fatigue; loss of appetite; weakness; constipation and diarrhea; numbness and tingling in the hands and feet; being tired, lethargic, or dizzy; forgetfulness, and lowered immune functioning. Keep in mind, too, that some conditions caused by not taking your vitamins, supplements, or minerals are irreversible.

2nd Mistake:  Assuming You Have Been Cured of Your Obesity A "pink cloud" or honeymoon experience is common following WLS. When you are feeling better than you have in years, and the weight is coming off easily, it's hard to imagine you will ever struggle again. But unfortunately, it is very common for WLS patients to not lose to their goal weight or to regain some of their weight back. A small weight regain may be normal, but huge gains usually can be avoided with support, education, effort, and careful attention to living a healthy WLS lifestyle. For most WLSers, if you don't change what you've always done, you're going to keep getting what you've always gotten -- even after weight loss surgery.

3rd Mistake:  Drinking with Meals Yes, it's hard for some people to avoid drinking with meals, but the tool of not drinking with meals is a critical key to long-term success. If you drink while you eat, your food washes out of your stomach much more quickly, you can eat more, you get hungry sooner, and you are at more risk for snacking. Being too hungry is much more likely to lead to poor food choices and/or overeating.

4th Mistake:  Not Eating Right Of course everyone should eat right, but in this society eating right is a challenge. You have to make it as easy on yourself as possible. Eat all your meals--don't skip. Don't keep unhealthy food in sight where it will call to you all the time. Try to feed yourself at regular intervals so that you aren't as tempted to make a poor choice.  And consider having a couple of absolutes: for example, avoid fried foods completely, avoid sugary foods, always use low-fat options, or only eat in a restaurant once a week. Choose your "absolutes" based on your trigger foods and your self knowledge about what foods and/or situations are problematic for you.

5th Mistake:  Not Drinking Enough Water Most WLS patients are at risk for dehydration. Drinking a minimum of 64 oz. of water per day will help you avoid this risk. Adequate water intake will also help you flush out your system as you lose weight and avoid kidney stones. Drinking enough water helps with your weight loss, too.

6th Mistake:  Grazing Many people who have had WLS regret that they ever started grazing, which is nibbling small amounts here and there over the course of the day. It's one thing to eat the three to five small meals you and your doctor agree you need. It's something else altogether when you start to graze, eating any number of unplanned snacks. Grazing can easily make your weight creep up. Eating enough at meal time, and eating planned snacks when necessary, will help you resist grazing.   Make a plan for what you will do when you crave food, but are not truly hungry. For example, take up a hobby to keep your hands busy or call on someone in your support group for encouragement.

7th Mistake:  Not Exercising Regularly Exercise is one of the best weapons a WLS patient has to fight weight regain. Not only does exercise boost your spirits, it is a great way to keep your metabolism running strong. When you exercise, you build muscle. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body will burn, even at rest!

8th Mistake:  Eating the Wrong Carbs (or Eating Too Much) Let's face it, refined carbohydrates are addictive. If you eat refined carbohydrates they will make you crave more refined carbohydrates. There are plenty of complex carbohydrates to choose from, which have beneficial vitamins. For example, if you can handle pastas, try whole grain Kamut pasta--in moderation, of course. (Kamut pasta doesn't have the flavor some people find unpleasant in the whole wheat pastas.) Try using your complex carbohydrates as "condiments," rather than as the center point of your meal. Try sprinkling a tablespoon of brown rice on your stir-fried meat and veggies.

9th Mistake:  Going Back to Drinking Soda Drinking soda is controversial in WLS circles. Some people claim soda stretches your stomach or pouch. What we know it does is keep you from getting the hydration your body requires after WLS--because when you're drinking soda, you're not drinking water! In addition, diet soda has been connected to weight gain in the general population. The best thing you can do is find other, healthier drinks to fall in love with. They are out there.

10th Mistake:  Drinking Alcohol If you drank alcohol before surgery, you are likely to want to resume drinking alcohol following surgery. Most surgeons recommend waiting one year after surgery. And it is in your best interest to understand the consequences of drinking alcohol before you do it. Alcohol is connected with weight regain, because alcohol has 7 calories per gram, while protein and vegetables have 4 calories per gram. Also, some people develop an addiction to alcohol after WLS, so be very cautious. Depending on your type of WLS, you may get drunker, quicker after surgery, which can cause health problems and put you in dangerous situations.

If you think you have a drinking problem, get help right away. Putting off stopping drinking doesn't make it any easier, and could make you a lot sicker.
