2 year update

Oct 13, 2012

My 2 year surgiversary was October 7.  I lost about 125 lbs, but recently have gained 10 lbs.  I am still very happy about the results, and I know I could lose the 10 and more, but I am pretty happy where I am at.  I can basically eat what I want and maintain.  I do still go to the gym, not nearly as often, but I go.  My newest hobby, poker, probably qualifies as transfer of addiction, but I am not risking any money so I am not worried.  (I play in a free league.)  I also volunteer with shelter dogs every Sunday (Jog a Dog program in Austin, TX).

My best advice is to follow the rules.  Don't stop taking your vitamins or calcium.  Try to avoid liquids while eating (this is very difficult).  Drink lots of water.

Happy Birthday to me and ONEDERLAND

Nov 08, 2011

Today is my 50th birthday and I am happy to report that I made it to onederland.  I actually made it last week but I wanted to confirm it at least a couple times before taking credit.

I just came back from a few days in Vegas with 10 of my best friends.  It was a fabulous trip.  Tomorrow, I leave for Atlanta.  My sister and two of my friends are giving me a birthday party on Saturday.  Can't wait - I hope to see many friends that I have not seen in a very long time.  While it is not a surprise party, I will be excited to find out who is able to attend.  I do not know the guest list.

Everyone is telling me I do not need to lose more weight.  I am trying not to take that as an excuse to go wild.  I am still going to the gym regularly and I eat smaller portions.  I do need to work on eating better things.

So close to onederland

Oct 01, 2011

I am sooooo close to onederland.  I got on the scale this morning and I am less than 2 lbs away.  I have been kinda stalled lately and today is the closest I have come.  201.5 lbs.  My weight fluctuates wildly (wildly in my mind, probably normal for "regular" folks), so I won't take credit for onederland until I see it on the scale a few times.

I had to get new drawers today because the ones I got a few months back are droopy.  I was going to get the next lower "plus" size, but as it turns out, there is no lower plus size in the undies I like.  So I had to get regular size.  I hope they fit, but I am worried that the sizes are different and might not fit.

Everyone that knew me before says I am "skinny".  I do not see it and I am still in the OBESE category on BMI.  I am happy to report that I am able to fit into the largest size of the "Missoni for Target" line.  I love the clothes, but I expect to get some sneers from snobby people who know the clothes are from Target.  I don't care - the pieces I got are fantastic and I can't wait for cooler weather so I can wear them.

I have been eating entirely too much sugar lately, so I started yesterday to conciously avoid sugar.  It made the difference on the scale this morning, so I going to continue to moderate my intake.  I know that is what I am supposed to be doing anyway.  I also need to get more protein in, and stop snacking.

I will hit the one year mark on 10/7 - would be a huge victory to be under 200 by then.

10 month checkup

Aug 12, 2011

Well, I didn't make my goal of onederland by my appointment with my surgeon.  I know what I did wrong.  No excuses, I simply ate poorly.  I have lost 118lbs.  My new goal is to lose 15 more lbs. by my 50th birthday in November.  I think that is reasonable.  I have 12 weeks to do it, and if I eat better I believe it will be easy to get there.  I figured out that my average weight loss per week since surgery has been about 2.8lbs.  I know my average will be less than that at this stage, so I think about 1.25lbs/week is a reasonable goal.

Oh my blood work looked good.  :)

Leeches

Jul 22, 2011

I think I look like I have leeches on my face.  I went today to have moles removed from my face and neck.  I got a bulk discount.  Now I have 10 spots with stitches.  Not pretty.  I wonder when I'll be able to show my face.  The stitches don't come out until Thursday.

This is sort of a "test drive" of a recommended plastic surgeon.  If these come out well, he will get my business when I am done losing weight.  I am regretting my decision at this point because i cannot imagine these places on my face looking like nothing happened, but I am hopeful.  My sister had a bunch of moles removed from her face a few years ago and I cannot even tell.  But it sounds like her surgeon did not use stitches.  I am worried.

I am also worried because I cannot do any exercise until the stitches come out.  I need to maintain my momentum with that.  I did my 2000 meter swim on Sunday, trainer on Mon/Wed, and my cardio on Thursday.  I am going to try to eat less over these days.

I have not made much progress toward my goal of being under 200 by the time I see my surgeon on August 12th.  No excuses, I just have not been eating well.  I have been exercising so I have not gained, but I have not lost.

Another interim goal

Jun 19, 2011

I have had success setting interim goals, so here is the latest.  I want to be below 200 by my next check up, which is scheduled for August 12th.  That is about 15 lbs away.  I think I can do it, unless the weight loss slows down.  I am definitely still losing, and I have gone down another pant size.  I can wear size 16 in capris (White Stag brand at Wal-Mart - 7 bucks :)).  I have lost 110 lbs from my highest.  Very pleased with my progress, but I feel fatter now than I did at 325lbs.  Not sure what that is about.  I am relying on willpower these days, because I could eat a lot more than I do.  I am exercising a lot, and that makes me hungrier.  I just don't keep bad stuff in the house, because I would not be able to resist it.  I've been looking for junk all weekend, thank goodness there is nothing in the house.

My "favorite" workout

May 13, 2011

I am not one of those folks that learns to love exercise.  I'm going to be like Oprah and never like it.  Today I did my "favorite" workout.  It is my favorite because it is easy and fast.  Doing this workout only takes 30 minutes plus cooldown, and at my weight/age, it burns over 400 calories!  There are special treadmills at my gym that have the incline up to level 30.

One of the best aspects of this workout is the speed - most of the time you are only walking at 2 miles per hour.  I have to hang on for the 21 and 30 inclines - one of my goals is to try to get through it without hanging on.  Something to shoot for.  According to the folks at the gym, walking at 2mph at the high incline is where the most fat is burned.

I also gave myself a break today by not getting up at the buttcrack of dawn to go to the gym.  I had an early meeting so I decided to sleep later and brought my workout clothes so that I could go after work.  And I actually went.

Check up (7 months)

May 06, 2011

Went today for my 6 (actually 7) month check up.  I think the scales at the doctor's office are a bit off, to my benefit :)  The doctor's scale shows I have lost almost 105lbs!  But, my scale shows closer to 100lbs.  Last year at my first visit, the scales were mis-calibrated.  I think they are off again.  So, I am only going to claim 100lbs here.

My labs were fine, my chief complaint is constipation.  I requested that I reduce my Iron pills to once every 3 days and the doctor is OK with that.  I go back in 3 months and we'll evaluate Iron levels then.  I have always had this reaction to Iron.  I also need to get in more water, which should help.

The doctor suggested that I am doing too much weight lifting.  I thought that was a strange comment.  He wants me to do less and thinks it will speed my weight loss.  I am all for speeding up the weight loss, but I wonder if I should just keep up what I am doing so I don't lose ground.

I started out wearing size 30/32 and I am now in size 20 jeans and XL tops.  People are really noticing.  Some of my friends are calling me skinny.  It's all relative, because I still outweigh everyone by at least 80 lbs.

Good week

May 01, 2011

Went swimming this morning, did the complete mile plus one lap for good measure.  45 minutes of swimming.  Now I want to work up to swimming faster.

I took a very short trip to Vegas to see friends, and before it I went to the gym every day.  I did not gain any weight even though I had a good time.  I did not do well at the poker table, though.  :(

Going back to Vegas in June, maybe I'll have better gambling luck on that trip.

Swimming

Apr 24, 2011

I got into a pool for the first time in many many years today.  I had a goal of doing 20 laps (40 lengths) and I surpassed that and did 25 laps.  That is over 3/4 of a mile :).  I could have done more.  I want to swim at least once/week because it is such good exercise.  Next time I am going to go for the full mile.  It would be about 32 laps.
