6 Month Surgiversary and My First Triathlon

Jul 16, 2010

Well folks, a few days ago I celebrated my 6 month surgiversary.  Some days it feels like its been a long 6 months, other days it feels like it was just yesterday that I was waking up from surgery.  With the exception of hitting a stall, which is apparently very normal, things have for the most part continued to go well.

I experienced my first trip with no access to a fridge or kitchen, and boy was it hard.  I felt like I was almost snacking the entire weekend, I even had a few brautwursts! Eek! I also felt hungry all the time, which was a very fraustrating feeling.  When I got back home I was up a pound or two which I totally expected, but those few pounds came off at the snap of a finger.  I feel like my appetite has increased.  I can eat a little more, where as I used to eat 1/2 cup of chili with crackers, I can now eat a little more than 1/2 cup.  It seems like I'm hungry more often in between meals, oh and I can't get enough of really pink, juicy watermelon! I've been eating a lot of watermelon, still eating my cheese sticks, blue diamond salt and vinegar flavored almonds, chili, sugar free oatmeal, protein shakes, chiptole (I portion out to 6 1/2 cup portions), and wings (2-3 max for dinner for protein).  I'm still not eating veggies because my focus is protein and carbs.

I completed my first triathlon (425 yard swim, 11.2 mile bike, and 2.6 mile run) in an hour and 17 minutes. Yay! I don't care really what the time was but more that I was able to successfully do the race.  I felt great afterwards and was not exhausted or sore.  I guess that means that I could have pushed it a little more after I recovered from the swim to bike, which was wicked by the way!! Everyone always talks about how hard the transition is from bike to run, but the swim to bike was really hard for me.  My lungs and chest area was definitely a winded!! I had a great time and I'm looking forward to my next race on August 1st.  I set the bar WAY high and right here right now am saying that I am going to do everything in my power to complete an 1/2 Ironman next fall. Whoa! It'll be an amazing feeling crossing the finish line after a 1/2 Ironman.  Not many people can do it.  After my race I came home and weighed myself, and surprise surprise, I lost 3 pounds.  Not from the race but something finally triggered weight to start coming off again.  I'm up to 93 pounds.  Not 100 pounds, but close enough and I'll take it.  Oh and the regularity issues I was having, has been thrown to the way side when I added running.  I swear its like a natural laxative!!

My 6 month appointment is coming up, so I'll post after the appointment.  Hopefully I my follow-up will be with the young cutey doctor again ;-P
