Bruce Thayer Bariatric Surgeon M.D.,F.A.C.S.

I really think Dr. Thayer is very caring. He seems to understand what I am going through. His office staff is great. I was 45 minutes late and they were so understanding. They told me not to worry, I still would be able to see the doctor. I had a 3 hour visit in his office and his staff explained everything. (surgery, risks, aftercare) Dr. Thayer even has a monthly support group. This weekend he even called me to see how I was doing. I would rate him a 10+.

My first impression of Dr. Thayer was that he was a very down to earth person. He was wonderful and made me feel very comfortable. He joked and was very kind at all ends. Hid office staff were also great. I could not say enough about them. His wife and daughter both work in his office. I would reccomend him to anyone who is thinking about having this surgery. Dr. Thayer made it known that aftercare is very important to a good recovery. He has monthly groups on the first Thursday of every month at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Dr. Thayer went through all the risks with me and told me he has had no deaths which really eased my mind. I have all the confidence in the world in him. I am putting my life in his hands and trust him 100% with it. He has you watch a short video on your pre-op to help explain the risks. I believe that Dr. Thayer is both surgically competant and loving and I know that everything will be ok with him as my Dr.
UPDATE: I went in for my surgery but had a slight fever. Dr. Thayer would not go ahead with the surgery because he said he wanted me to be 100% so I would have a good recovery. I am so blessed to have such a caring, cautious Dr. taking care of me. He even called me over hte weekend to see if I was ready for Monday. He is a cupcake he really is. As disappointed as I was about having to postpone my surgery I was very thankful he didn't take any risks with me. So Dr. Thayer if you read this THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!!!..Oh and by the way I was scheduled the same day for Friday October 13, 2000..Let's hope the fever and whatever is in me brewing is gone.

I first met with Dr. Thayer on 10/25 and I LOVED HIM. He was very approachable and easy to talk to. His entire office and staff was very professional and kind. I have met with Dr. Robinson at the Brigham, Dr. Randall at LMH and now Dr. Thayer. I'm going with Dr. Thayer because I think he has the best overall program; the best pre-op care, the best post-op care and the easiest to talk to staff. You will wait a long time for your initial appointment, but then things move very quickly.

Dr. Thayer is in Newton Ma., as many others have already pointed out. I had my initial consultation with his practice on October 11th. I met with the Psychologist for over an hour, then the nutritionist, watched a video on WLS and then met with Dr. Thayer. The staff was friendly and kind. The process was wonderful. I appreciated only having to have one appointment to meet the whole team.
Dr. Thayer's daughter "Sally" does all the insurance and scheduling for you. She was wonderful. I was very relaxed and happy with the entire process. I also met an email friend in the office who I had been corresponding with for several weeks. What a pleasant surprise... The team stresses that surgery is a tool, & life style change, & after care are required for long term success.
Post-op - Dr. Thayer is the greatest. The entire NWH program is to be commended, you could not ask for a better team of people to take care of you before and after surgery

At first Dr Thayer, scared me! His first question to me. Was... Wow girl, you are a
little old to be having this surgery! Why do you want to have this surgery? My answer to him, was I was not looking to be a model.
I was hoping to add several years on to my life that I would not have had... My Mother and her siblings have all lived a long life. Without this operation I will not have that opportunity. After talking about my medical hystory, Dr Thayer felt compfortable about my past health hystory.
I did find Dr Thayer, an excellent surgeon.
I started with another doctor, very close to where we live, but did not feel compfortable
with the the whole program. Dr Thayer, and his staff are the best .. I am sure that it will be worth the traveling time to see this very capable man!!
I am very sure the after care will be as good as other patients claim it to be...
The support program is second to none!!!

iwent to Dr. Thayers office today and it wass packed I was a little uncomfortable becayse like most people that are over weight I don't like being in a crowd taking up to much room but all in all The other patients were pretty friendly and talked about the surgery so that was good I meet with the Pysch Doc and A nutritionist why are they all about 90 Lbs the only thing I think they would know about a weight problem is how to keep from being launched on a windy day Ha HA! but the woman was really nice and the psch Doc was the same very freindly Dr. Thayers was down to earth and answerd my questions and then they said they 'd send me a date in a few days it all went pretty smoothly as A guy i like it the office was fast efficiant and straight foward I'm over 4 bills and i didn't get any kind of negative feeling if your feeling a little nervous because your just checking thei out and you don't know if you'll get a referal just call them and ask to have a Dr that they recomend that might give you a referall I did and i was in to see dr thayer in a couple of weeks but I was on the cancelation list call mon at 8-8:30 and ask to be put on it one thing i can say some people had complicaitions and some didn't but they were all glad the did it this is the plaCE TO GO

I liked Dr. Thayer and his office staff immediately. Their program offers pre-op groups (I am going to one tomorrow 4/24/01) and post-op groups and urges people considering the surgery to go to both. I have a bunch of questions about post-op medication and eating that I hope can be answered at one of the meetings.
I was very impressed with his experience in doing the open RNY and his low rate of complications. He and his office staff discussed any possible complication prior to the surgery.
There was a slight problem sending the information to the right area of my insurance company but after a few phone calls and a letter, that got straightened out. My insurance approved me in a few days.
Dr. Thayer's office offers post-op bimonthly meetings in the evening. There are also regularly scheduled appointments for nutritional couseling, blood work and meeting with the doctor.
The surgery itself went very smoothly. I was under a little longer than anticipated-4 hours- because there was a bit of a problem getting my gallbladder out. I had some discomfort post-op but not much. I only needed my pain meds a couple of times once I got home. So in answer to the question about surgical competence and bedside manner, I would say Dr. Thayer is great at both!
