Hosein Yasrebi Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr Yasrebi is a very concerned and competent surgeon. He has been doing this for over 21 years and has it perfected (or so it seems). My only advise to new or potential patients of Dr Y's is this: leave your feelings at home. Please dont misinterrupt this as him being mean, because thats NOT the case, but, he is very blunt, and sometimes says things you dont want to hear. Most of us dont, well, I never did, refer to us as "fat", I would always say "overweight" or "heavy", well, he has no qualms with saying FAT. And sometimes, its hard to hear, although we know its true, its just not a nice word. He puts you thru a very strict pre op diet, and he is serious about it. But, it helps you soooo much in the long run. He makes himself available to you 24 hours a day, and that is a comfort when you are home, and unsure of what to do. I would recommend him to anyone who is thinking about WLS.

GENERAL - What can I say about Dr Yasrebi?? What can't I say. He is the best. I love him with all of my heart. He has been doing obesity surgery for 20 plus years and does it likes it is an art!!! He is the Chief of Surgery at Memorial Hospital, and Memoral Hospital is in the top 100 in the United States. Since the time I first spoke with Dr Yasrebi, I was so impressed. His knowledge is beyond impressive. I can not imagine anyone wanting to have another surgeon after meeting with him. He spends so much time with you, learning every aspect of you and your situation. He has people from all over the country, all over the world that come to him for WLS. Jill, his nurse is so compassionate and also very knowledgable. I give him a 15 in a 1-10 rating. He had the best first impression on me, and it even got better over time. There is not one thing I can say about Dr Yasrebi, that would be negative, except maybe that he is too caring.

SURGERY DAY AND STAY IN HOSPITAL - I showed up the day of surgery and went directly in to be prepped. After the nurse was done with me and the Anestethiologist was done with me, Dr Yasrebi came by to check on me. He checked my I-V, he checked my stockings, he checked my chart and then OK'd me for surgery. When I awoke, the nurses were so compassionate and took such good care of me. When I arrived in my room, Dr Yasrebi came by to see me to check on me and see how I was doing. Then he came back that night to walk with me for about an hour and a half around the hospital floor. He is such a character and so nice. He came by the next morning and checked my incision and changed the bandages himself, he wanted to do it, not a nurse. I went home a couple hours later.
.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
POST-OP - I spent three and a half hours in surgery and 22 hours in the hospital. He called me everynight for five days to make sure I was doing well. And when I didn't answer the phone he called back numerous times over the night until he got me. Dr Yasrebi has perfected this surgery, doing at least 3 surgeries a week, and more than 800 Gastric Bypass' in the last eight years. EVERYBODY loves Dr Yasrebi, even the other hospital staff, they brag and brag and brag about Dr. Yasrebi.

SURGICAL COMPETENCE AND BEDSIDE MANNERS? - A+ and A+!!! You can't get any better!!! My goodness, he lectures other surgeons, hunders of them. He has never lost ONE patient in his entire career, that has to mean something. He is a perfectionist!!!

Detailed, blunt, intelligent, the best in what he does, his way or the highway. My impression of him remained the same. What I did realize that all he said and did was in my best interest. He does deeply care for his patients well being. His office staff is good with Jill being the most helpful of all.She softens his hard side. He's the stern father type while she is the soft kind mother type.
I liked his direct manner and his ability but didn't that he was such a control freak. He educates his patients extremely well and often questions them on what they have learned. You must be under his close care for a year and see him twice yearly there after for life.He says he even has a policeman that he sends out after you if you don't keep your appointments.Overall I would rate him 10 out of 10. I took no points off for bedside manner.I'm a nurse and in my opinion he is the best in his field. He does an open procedure and I only stayed in the hospital for 23 hours. My surgery was 4 days ago and I really feel good. I only took pain medicine at home for 2 days and now take tylenol only every 8 hours. Can't beat that.To have competence and bedside manner both would be great but I would take competence any time.He is short in one but more than makes up for it in the other.I wouldn't trust my life to anyone but him. I can reccomend him and not ever have any regrets.

Dr. Yasrebi is extremely personable, with a slightly dry wit and direct manner. He's very confident of his abilities and he makes you confident. Most patients meet him for the first time at his mandatory monthly meetings (he won't make an appt. for you unless you've been to one of these meetings). At the meeting, wls hopefuls mix with folks who've had the surgery and who look GREAT!. The combination of Dr. Yasrebi's careful explanation of the surgery plus living, breathing examples of his work in the room is unbeatable. Of course the downside of this is everyone wants him to do their surgery and now I've got to wait until NOVEMBER for my first appointment!
UPDATE - July, 2001: They had a cancellation. Jill called to offer me a September 12 appointment and I grabbed it!
UPDATE - I'm moving forward on my diet--must lose 10% in advance of surgery. The diet is horrible--800 calories--and has reinforced my decision to have surgery. I do not want to spend my life feeling hungry all the time. My surgery date has been set for
November 14, 2001. Dr. Yasrebi gets you in and out of the hospital in 23 hours...most recuperating is done at home. And that's
just fine with me.
UPDATE: I'm on the other side! One week post-op, I'm home, feeling great and think the world of Dr. Yasrebi and his program. I lost 26 pounds before surgery and dropped a couple more this week. But what's really amazing is how great I feel!

HE is excellent in knowledge and procedure. He has a different sense of humor. He insists on following all his rules and regulations. They are for your own good.He really is not a warm and fuzzy person. But knows his stuff better than anyone else.As far as I'm concerned he is the best in this field. You must be prepared to lose 10-15% of your total body weight,be able to use an incentive spirometer(hand held breathing devise) and breathe into it up to a level of 3500-4000.If you don't do these things you will not get a date for surgery. Its his way or the highway. He selects his patients and determines when they are ready for surgery. He educates his patients well and wants perfection. He plays a few games here and there but its in your best interest. He is a very blunt person so you must be prepared. He is a hands on M.D. He walks with you post-op in the hospital and checks with you at home. You are only in the hospital for approx. 24 hours. Thats excellent for an open procedure. His patients do excellent and he has never lost a patient in over 20 years. His office staff consisting of Jill and Linda can't be beat. They sure can help you get over some of the rough times. It would be great to have bedside manner and surgical competence all in one but in this case I will take competence. In this he surpasses all. I wouldn't have any other surgeon but him.

I was extremely impressed with his caring and professionalism. Iam a nursing student and was able to observe his surgery on rotation before becoming a patient. He is a total advocate for his patients. He is with you evry second from preop to postop and he comes and walks you personally afterward. He was very careful and meticulous with everything he did. I have watched many surgerys and they are not always that way with a lot of surgeons. I hope this helps

He put me at ease right away, he did not make me feel bad in any way. Over time I did not want to go see him because he was strict and told me the truth about everything, which I dont take well all the time. He was strict about loosing weight before surgery and if you did not do it then you were out of the program, but I learned later that it had to be that way to shrink everything and to see how committed I am. His office staff is wonderfull and have helped me with everything I need. If you are serious about this procedure then I really think this is the best doctor there is. He makes you go to a group meeting and then gives you a test before surgery and if you fail then you dont get your surgery untill you pass, there are things that can go wrong and he wants to make sure you know all of them. He gave me a detailed aftercare program to follow and he called me every night the first week to make sure I was doing O.K. When he told us about the risks it was a little scary but then again he wanted to make sure you know what you are doing. I would rate him a 10 out of a 10. He had bedside manner, surgical competance and all, the nurses get aggrivated with him but he makes sure you have the best and what you need. I would recommend him to anyone that is serious about his surgery. The only thing that I wish was discussed more was the emotional effect this surgery has on people. I have been in and out of a depression daily since the surgery and the first week I was home It was like I just had a baby, my emotions were a literal roller coaster, I even kicked my mother-n-law out of the house! LOL

My first impression was at first very intimidating. Dr. Yasrebi came across as being very professional, but I also thought very "unapproachable". But, after my first appointment, which, by the way lasted almost 3 hours, I knew I had hit the "jackpot"! Here was this little man, which I outweighed by at least 160lbs, and the first thing I remember was that he made me feel like a human being. He understood - completely. From that point on, I knew this was for me. Now, let me tell you what I've learned. You CAN'T pull any thing over him. As he told me, time after time, "I pyschic"(I don't think I spelled that right). His pre-op diet was the hardest "diet" I ever did. The first couple of weeks I tried to "do my own thing", and when I wasn't losing, he told me if I didn't listen to him, he would drop me and fast. He wants to know that you want this so bad that you'll be willing to do everything necessary to obtain it. That's the first thing I learned about myself, too. He, Jill & Kathy, care about their patients so much and with every step through his office door, they make you feel like you ARE the only patient they have. They answered every question and concern. The whole program, from start to finish(but I'm not even finished, yet)was a journey that every person who is thinking about this surgery should at least think about. And hard. The bedside manner was amazing. I have no intention of ever being obese again, but if I still was I would go this - again!
