Dr. Champion & his staff are all wonderful. I would recommend him to anyone. From the very start they all made me feel very comfortable. One of his nurses, Kathy, was so great & I really bonded with her from the beginning. Dr. Champion himself is very professional & really knows what is best. I have the upmost respect for him. His skills are unquestionable & his aftercare program is one not only very detailed & structured, but you really can feel that you have made this life long change with him & his staff right beside you. I researched a number of surgeons before making my choice & I am SO HAPPY with my choice. Between his staff & the wonderful support group I feel as though I have an extended family.

**Something to consider when choosing a surgeon: I have already mentioned Dr. Champion's aftercare program, but it really is something everyone should look into when choosing a surgeon. For instance here are some examples of what I feel set Dr. Champion & Williams out from the rest: 2 monthly support group meetings, an online support group meeting ran by Dr. Champion himself, A certified personal trainer that holds weekly exercise classes free of charge for post op patients, special events & parties for post op patients (like health fairs), a monthly newsletter with common concerns & questions being addressed, & an open forum with the office via telephone or email. It may sound as if I "over brag" about Dr. Champion, but I am just always impressed & amazed by him. Being a nurse I have been around many doctors & surgeons in my time & I have NEVER seen one that takes his patients so seriously and I just think that deserves extra recognition.**

I met with Dr Champion on June 7th. I think he is fantastic. The office staff is nice and everything seems so organized. He explained everything, showed me where the incisions would be made for the Lap Roux en Y, and then asked me if I had any questions. I had 14 pages, but didnt ask them all since he answered a lot during our talk. He is writing the letter for insurance and when they approve we will make a surgery date. Overall I am extremely pleased with him and his staff. Note of warning to potential patients.... his office has a big yellow leather couch in the reception area... that couch will suck you in... and make you want to take a nap. Hahaha. : )

I met with Dr. Champion yesterday(3/26/04) and he was exactly what I'd expected. I'd researched him almost as much as the surgery itself. He was very knowledgable, upfront, and more than well informed about overall statistics for the surgery as well as his own patients outcomes. He explained about complications that are possible and what he's seen in his own patients. He even admitted to having done three reversals on his own patients. He said he'd lost 3 patients out of the 1600 he has done the surgery on. I feel very confident in his abilities and can't wait to have him perform my LAP RNY.

POSTOP-Dr. Champion is just that..a CHAMPION. He has this surgery down to a fine art. He certainly lives up to his "one of the best in the nation" reputation.

I have not met my surgeon yet, but his office is amazingly efficient. Since I am out of state, the office handles all the predetermination and then I will meet him the day before surgery. I chose Dr. Champion based on his years of experience, journal articles I have read and the profiles of his patients. Also, I am a member of his yahoo group and I have listened to what his patients have said pre and post-op.

My first impression was very laid back. He was wearing khaki's and a shirt that was unbuttons at the top 2. He was a little rushed, but answered all of my questions. I was a little upset that I weighed more than I thought, and 2 inches shorter, resulting in a raised BMI. He wanted to know why it mattered as it wasn't much difference, and I couldn't explain but it put me off a little.
He is huge on afterare and is involved in his own online chat and message board support system. He explained all of the risks.

I was happy with him at the time - but writing this now, 7 years later - Wow he has got terrible bedside manner. That's all I'm going to say about that.

Dr. Champion is a great surgeon! He is some where around 55 years old. He is their to treat you not to be your pal. But he is nice. His office is very nice and the staff is great and very friendly. I would recomend him to anyone. His aftercare program is great. They have a support group and are their for you. He was stright forward with all information on the surgery. The risks and the positives. He is a wonderful Doctor. He is willing to answer any questions you may have. I love the hospital he uses Emory Dunwoody!!!!

My first impression of Dr. C was that he did not offer up a lot of information. He will answer any question you may have but he is not going to educate you unless you ask. The office staff is great. Never too busy to talk to you. If you go there, have your questions ready. I feel that Dr. C is one of the best doctors for preforming this proceedure. I would have no problem reccomending him

Dr. Champion was wonderful!
He answered all my questions and was very easy to talk with. I was very comfortable with him. He is a brillant surgeon and had a very good bedside manner. I was very impressed with the care he gave me in hospital and the amount of aftercare and support I have received since my surgery. He has the best aftercare program I have found in all my research.

I thought I had the best bariatric surgeon in the country. He had performed a laprascopic procedure on the Discovery Channel on a man that was larger than me, so I felt sure that I could have the procedure done that way with him. I only had conversation with his office staff since I live near Kansas City, Missouri and his office is in Marietta , Georgia. I met him for an office visit on Monday before having my surgery on Tuesday. He was very knowledgeable and seemed extremely competent, but also very arrogant in his mannerisms.

He performed my surgery on Tuesday in a remarkably fast time, I was told in recovery (although that could have been dreamt - I was pretty out of it!). The next day after my leak test, I was told I was very swollen and I ended up throwing up (not the last time, that's for sure) the barium. I stayed an extra day due to the bout of vomiting and went back to the hotel.

I felt bad, sort of dizzy and weird that night and received a very curt answer at 8 am when I called his answering service (and he actually hung up on me). His staff's reply was to tell me how he answers all his pages himself, but I still was perturbed at his reaction - I had a 700 mile drive in front of me and I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something seriously wrong before we took off.

All in all, I'm glad that I chose to have the procedure with Dr. Champion. I just think he could use a little work on his bedside manner and maybe a nurse could field his pages to determine severity first.
