Leo Murphy Bariatric Surgeon
10/24/01- I will meet with Dr. Murphy on November 12.
11/8/01- My consultation with Dr. Murphy was moved up to yesterday 11/7. I met with Dr. Murphy for about 15-20 minutes. He was very pleasant, kind of a jokester. My husband was with me while the Dr. explained the RNY surgery- the possible risks and complications, and what you should do after the surgery (although I was already very familiar with all this info). My husband didn't know much about the technical part of the surgery, so he asked questions and the Dr. very willingly, clearly, and consisely answered his questions and explained the procedure. Dr. Murphy greatly expressed the importance of exercise and protein and that I should be starting both an exercise program and protein supplements NOW. I got a packet of papers with info on pre-op stuff, a timeline to follow with recommendations of when to eat what, a shopping list of stuff to buy PRIOR to surgery so you have it at home when you return and some other good/helpful info. I did feel, however, that Dr. Murphy could have gone into more detail of what to do and what will be happening Post-Op. I myself have done a lot of research on the internet, have met with people who have had the surgery, and am a member of a support group for bariatric patients, so I had a good idea of what to expect. But I think he could have reinforced that information. He also talked pretty fast, so there were 2 questions I forgot to ask him. He covered most everything, but it was all so fast that I didn't even have a chance to remember that I had questions. The questions are pretty minor, so I will call his office and get the info. Other than that, I like Dr. Murphy's personality, he was very friendly and knowledgeable.
He seemed really busy that day (September 12) but very thorough.
He was very very nice, friendly, fatherly above all. I felt VERY
at ease with him, can't wait to see him on October 5th!
The office staff was always very friendly, but they seem really
really busy and it is hard to get calls from them, I was better off
when I called them, even if they had said they'd call me.
I went to the required seminar on July 3rd, sent in my blood test and
gallbladder u/s results and all my paperwork...and waited...and waited...
and finally called for a week before getting to talk to the patient
coordinator. She scheduled my internist/psychiatric/surgeon appointments
for 6 weeks in the future (a LONNNNG wait). Went to them on September
12, my paperwork was sent to Tricare on the 21st, and 6 days later I got
a call that I had been approved. Then I was told it would be about 2 weeks
until they'd call with a surgery date. October 1st, 3 days later, I got
a call from the scheduler that a spot had opened up...for October 5th! So,
with 4 days notice, I am having surgery!!! Yea! I thought I would be waiting
until December!!
I had the pleasure of having both Drs. Leo AND Mary Murphy (father and daughter team) perform my surgery. I met Leo Murphy at the intake and I was very impressed with him. I have a petpeeve of doctors not listening to me when I describe thoughts, symptoms or requests. I knew what the surgery entailed as I researched it thoroughly so I was impressed that Leo Murphy recognized that fact and didn't ignore it. We spent more time going over specific questions as opposed to an overview. I was "on the fence" regarding whether to have it open or LAP and he helped me make the decision to have it open. He chooses not to do them LAP anymore but certainly offered to refer me to the doctors who did.
I was encouraged by him all the way through! The post-op appointments have been fun and informative and his bedside manner is terrific. I have had a very positive experience. The only thing I didn't care for was the staff at the office--very sterile and unimaginitive. The nurses were better but the fron desk people had a lot to be desired. Don't expect any encouragement from them.
Dr. Murphy explained the complete surgery. He told me it wasn't my fault that I was fat, but that he could help me become a normal size person. He was very warm, but still professional. I feel very comfortable with him. He told me to work up to walking 45minutes a day 4 days a week. And try to lose 10 lbs. He said of you lose a little weight it makes it easier to do the surgery because it causes everything to loosen up inside. He stressed the diet I would be following after surgery and the importance of drinking plenty of water and eating proteins first. He was very consirned because of my having a DVT after a previous surgery and told me they would take every precaution possible to insure that would not happen this time. I am glad he is my surgeon and I feel he will do a very good job for me.
My first impression of Dr. Murphy was that he was a very kind man. He spoke "to me" and not "about" me. He seems to be a very thorough doctor. He walked me through the whole procedure, so much so that I did not really have many questions afterwards. His office staff seemed to be very encouraging of the patients. Many on his staff are former patients, themselves, therefore they know exactly how you are feeling. In addition to being very informative about the surgery itself, Dr. Murphy also stresses the need to begin taking steps NOW, ahead of surgery, to better prepare myself for surgery. And being the good doctor that he is, he also stresses what I'll need do after my surgery in order to assure myself of a safe & speedy recovery and achieve sucessful weight loss. I have the utmost respect and confidence in his surgical competence, and I appreciate his kindness and compassion.
They have all been great. The only wrinkle I had was that the woman that was in charge of the HMO clients stopped working for Pacific Bariatric, when they put a new person in(Melody-she has been very helpful)I was lost in the shuffle for about two weeks. I called and it was cleared up very quickly. All the staff has been wonderful, I'm sure I called enough times to drive them crazy, but they were always very helpful.
I have had my surgery, everything went smoothly. Leo Murphy performed my surgery, but I haven't seen him since before the surgery. While in the hospital and in my follow up exams I have seen his daughter Mary Murphy(general surgery), she has been great.
Dr Murphy is Great.concerned about the whole patient.
my impression hasn't changed about Dr Murphy over time
The Staff is very helpful and conciderate
there was nothing that I disliked about Dr Murphy
Dr. Murphy is easy to talk to, kind and compasionate. I feel he takes care of you like you were one of his family members, and is very personable
The aftercare program consists of 5 check-up at regular intervals the first year and then one checkup annually. He prescribes excercise and suppliments. They also have monthly support groups in various areas monthly and
annual reunions for wls patients
The risks of surgery is his number one priority. Making sure that you recieve the very best care possible.
I would say that Dr. Murphy is a excellant and competant Doctor and Surgeon. I wish that he was my Primary Care Physician I like him that well.
