I attended a seminar to learn more about the weight loss surgery that I had heard so much about. The Doctor lecturing that night was Dr. Leo Murphy. At first glance he reminded me so much of my Uncle George. As I listened to him I could tell that he was a caring person but also a no-nonsense Doctor. He made you know for certain there were risks and that the surgery is a tool for losing weight and not just a "cure-all" and he listed the things that you must commit to in order to be successful. Also, his patients have things to do prior to surgery to be prepared as much as possible to get them through the surgery and after with as few problems as possible. This I really liked.
He would not even consider doing surgery unless the patient does his/her part. This showed me he truly cared for his patients and wanted them to be as healthy as they could be for a successful journey. That night I thought I'd like Dr Murphy to be my Doctor if I chose to have wls.
The next time I met Dr. Murphy was in his office for my surgery consult. He was just as nice as he could be. He went over the risks involved with the surgery for me and my husband. Dr Murphy took time to draw pictures of the surgery and made sure we understood everything and then asked if we had any questions. He answered the questions we had and gave us all the time we needed. I was disappointed in one thing. He told me to go home lose 28 pounds and get a personal trainer, start the protein drinks and exercise, exercise, exercise. At first I thought to myself, if I could lose 28 pounds on my own why do I need this surgery, I grumbled to myself a little bit and to my husband. Then I stopped myself by remembering why he wanted me to do this. So I would be in the best physical shape possible to have a successful surgery. So I stopped my grumbling and started thinking about the gym. So I guess I could say what I liked least about Dr Murphy was exactly the reason I chose him as my surgeon, his no nonsense manner. He explained the risks at the seminar and they scared the heck out of me. He also explained if we did everything he told us to do, we could minimize them. I was given two booklets about the aftercare, Dr Murphy didn't much go over that part at the first consult. I figure he will tell me about aftercare at a later time. I have to see Dr Murphy one more time when I have the 28 pounds off and my muscle mass is still the same, then he will schedule my surgery. I am so excited. I start water aerobics in two days and will meet my personal trainer, he has helped pre-op patients before and is knowledgeable about wls. I am very excited I have dropped 10 pounds already, by walking and having protein shakes in place of two meals a day. I have all the confidence in the world in Dr Murphy. I feel surgical competence is better than bedside manner but when you have both you are really a winner and I believe I'm a winner with Dr Murphy as my surgeon. The office staff has been greatt o deal with. They went above and beyond to help us while being lost in San Diego and when we missed the psych appointment because we got lost they did everything to reschedule it for a later time the same day so we didnt have to make another trip down. I felt that was really something. The nurse I had put me right at ease with her great smile and her caring personality. I hope because I have nothing negative to say, you think I may have rose colored glasses on, but truly everything has been very positive and gone very smoothly. I am a great believer that you get out of a situation what you put in. I'm a people person, I enjoy people and when someone is having a bad day and not cheerful a little pat on their back may be all that is needed to get a smile from them.

My first impression of Dr. Murphy was a good one. He took his time in our appointment and made sure I understood everything about the surgery. He addressed all my concerns.

The one thing you should know about Dr. Murphy is he is an advocate for exercise and protein. When you go to the big consoltation meeting, the next day you should starting taking your protein and start walking. He beleives that the more you exercise the less likely you will have complications.

I met Dr. Murphy on 1/13/03 and was very impressed. He seemed to genuinely care about his patients and explained the procedure thoroughly. He wants you to be doing everything you can ahead of time, such as protein, no smoking, etc. but he also stresses why that is so important. He made me feel very comfortable.

I liked Dr. Leo Murphy from 1st meeting (orientation), and chose him for my surgeon because I felt confident in his capabilities.
Just saw him again 5 days ago for my pre-op, and am even more sure of my choice.
The office staff at Pacific Bariatric are great, as far as cooperating with you and your insurance and PCP to keep things progressing. They are very likeable as well on a personal level. I believe two or more of the staff members have had the surgery personally...
As far as liking something least about him, he didn't give me a reason to not like him or have negative feelings or doubts- but of course those are just a first/second impressions.
Future patients should know that he is very well qualified, very professional, very focused on the health and well being of the patient, not his pocket-book. He is also fairly demanding in his pre-op requirements, with good cause. Also, he is very accessible and human.
Dr. Murphy emphasizes aftercare just as much as pre-op care, stressing that this is a whole life change, not a quick fix. Patients are repeatedly provided with material and resources to educate and prepare themselves for this life change.
There is a very structured aftercare program; for local and non-local patients... non-locals are given aftercare by Pacific Bariatric and their own PCP in unison.
All risks, benefits, and other relevant information is provided repeatedly, in various forms (oral and written at orientations, oral and written at pre-ops, etc.). Patients are given opportunity to ask anything they need, and are provided with a wealth of information. I was impressed that the subject of risks and complications was gone over with me so completely and seriously, rather than being taken lightly or passed over quickly.
Overall, I would rate Dr. Leo Murphy as a good candidate for doing this surgery; but this is only my non-professional opinion. I also have only gotten as far as the pre-ops; I haven't had the experience of going through the surgical procedure with him yet.
As far as bedside manner vs. surgical competence... since I haven't had the surgery yet, I would have to refer you to his bio and his qualifications rather than my personal experience regarding competence. As for bedside manner- you'll love him! Great guy!

My first impression of Dr. Murphy was that he seemed very nice. He treated me like a daughter. Although, he seemed to emphasize the risks more than the benefits of the surgery. To me it kind of sounded like he may have been discouraging me from having the surgery. I think he was generally concerned about my well being however he sees so many people throughout the day that I think a lot of what he says sounds scripted. I think Dr. Murphy genuinely was concerned but I think he could have gotten to know me personally a little more in my visit. Everything seemed so fast. Overall I would rate Dr. Murphy as a good Dr.

I suppose my first impression of Dr. Murphy was
that he was very serious about what he expected his
patients to contribute to their own health and
recovery. That has never changed.

I think that because he wants the very best for
his patients he expects them to participate in their
own health improvement. The surgery is merely a
tool that is only as effective as the user.

After I saw him a couple of more times I had the distinct
impression that he cares deeply about his patients. He is
warm and reassuring and positive.

If you are expecting a pussycat, forget it. He will expect
any patient to tow the line.

I did a little research on Dr. Murphy before he did my surgery.
He has an excellent reputation. I think that I would give him
an A+ in terms of surgical competence. And his bedside manner
isn't far behind.

If I have a critism it is that he is so terribly busy that I never
spent much time with him.

Dr Murphy seems very perfessional and is very adament about exercise.
Since I have only seen him once my impression of him hasn't changed.
The office staff is very friendly face to face, but hard as hell to get thru to anybody over the phone. It also seems they lose a lot of the paper work being faxed to them. Just a tip.....Call your doctor's office and asked them to fax everything to you and Pacific Bariatric. That way when Pacific says they don't have it you can fax it yourself and send it directly to someone's attention.

They do stress the the aftercare and the risks of the surgery and how everything is linked together by how well you do your part.

Dr. Murphy is a cheerful, energetic, encouraging man. The staff is WONDERFUL!

Dr. Murphy stresses exercise and I am in total agreement, it is the key to success!
