Straight forward but a little hurried. But, he did answer all my questions.
Same but I have noticed he doesn't have the best memory.
Office staff is excellent!
Memory - for example - one time he told me I had to be on liquid diet for another month but it was already time for me to advance. I had to remind him and then he got a little confused.
Strongly emphasizes aftercare and supports.
There's a monthly support group and f/up visits w/him. You can arrange f/up w/nutritionist but she's available at support groups anyway.
Surgical competence is better. Notes - I'm a nurse and I have known very few surgeons w/good bedside manners.

Dr. Roll was smiling at me as I walked down the hall towards his office and that was so wonderful because I was scared and very anxious. He is a very kind, patient and knowledgeable person and doesn't leave you wondering about anything. He gives you the freedom to ask any and all questions and never rushes you one bit. His office staff is absolutely the best..even though one of them was feeling a little sick and had to go home early.
He says we are on a journey and I,the patient, is the main character in the journey. He keeps stressing how we must listen and obey the instructions that we will be recieving if we want this journey to be successful.
To be a great surgeon, the Doctor must have complete competence and also great bedside manner. Since I haven't had my surgery yet, I will let you know about that at a later date. I just know that the report will be great.
I am not a negative person so it will be hard for me to talk about the "minor" bad things....so far I haven't had any bad things to happen.

<p align="left">Dr. Roll lived up to all the good things I heard about him before the initial visit. He is very professional, knowledgable, and goes to great lengths to explain every aspect of the pre-op, surgery, and post-op. He is serious about the whole program and wants a commitment from the patients, that they will follow the rules in order to achieve the maximum advantage from the surgery.
Dr. Roll has a good sense of humor and makes a patient feel very comfortable.
I am looking forward to my surgery, knowing what a I am in good, capable hands.

Dr. Roll was pretty much as I expected from other comments on this site, except that he was more personable and I was impressed that he took almost two hours at the end of the day to answer my two pages of typed question that my wife and I had for him. Granted, some of the answers were "I don't know, everyone reacts differently to the surgery", but he gave many examples of his patients and he patiently addressed all of my concerns. He made some candid comments about other doctors that I had been researching, but insisted that I continue to check them all out, which I did, and I came back to him. My only disappointments were that he did not know much about this or other web sites and he rarely visits the 'Staple Club' meetings that most of his patients faithfully go to. I am scheduled for Jan 17, 2003 and can't wait to get far beyond the other side.

When I wasn't feeling well and throwing up all the time, as soon as I called Dr. Roll, he had me in and scoped within hours, and he was so kind to me in the hospital. I was very impressed with the care that he gave to me. That is very important to me.
10/09/01 -- My first impression of Dr. Roll... He seems to be an extremely nice man. He has a sense of humor, which made me feel comfortable right away. He has years of experience behind him, and made me feel very confident in his ability. The women that work in his office are very kind and helpful. Dr. Roll outlines the whole procedure from start to finish... Starting with my first visit, to the visits required with his Nutritionist, the Psychiatrist, and the galbladder sonogram requirements, all pre-op procedures, the day of the surgery, leaving the hospital, all the way to a year after surgery, and everything in between. He is very structured and has certain rules that you have to follow. I felt that I made a very good choice when I chose him as my Doctor. Wish me luck... I'll know in two days when my surgery date is. According to Barbara, my insurance will cover this. I will post more as I get to know him better. He made a very good first impression.
10/11/01 -- Okay... today is two days after I met Dr. Roll for the first time. My insurance got approved after 1 phonecall, and I have a surgery date!

Dr. Roll was very straight foward in his approach from the get go. He told me that this is just a tool that I could either cheat the system (which he told me how to do) or I can make it work. He didnt stay with me for any extended period of time in the hospital but was willing to answer any questions I had. His staff is unreal, they really nice and really care about your well being. If I were to rate him I would give him a 9 out of 10 (always room for improvement). He is great!

I have my first consultation with Dr. Roll on September 30, 2002.
Well, I just got in from my first consultation with Dr. Roll and I must admit that I was nervous and scared but he is sooo easy to talk to that I almost forgot why it was I was there (LOL). My impression of Dr. Roll was that he reminded me of a fatherly type. His office staff was wonderful! As I was leaving one of his patient's (who by the way one 1 year post op today) was in the waiting room and she looked terrific! It was nice to see a postie. There was nothing I didn't like about Dr. Roll but I was a little disappointed that he doesn't do a leak test before you leave the hospital. He does not feel the need too as he is "that good". So, I place my life and belly in his hands and know that he will do a good job and bring me back on the other side. In him I have full confidence!! He has a very strict aftercare program for a year as we are "all a team" and I am the lead player and he considers himself the quarterback! He was so joking and having fun while still being very professional and straight-up about the procedure. He addressed the risks of surgery and takes all necessary steps to prevent any risks from happening (ie; heparin/stockings for blood clots). I would rate Dr. Roll an A+++++++++++. I feel surgical competence is better overall than manner but he has them both and that is GREAT! I am soooo looking forward to surgery!!! Good luck to all who decide to travel this road and have a safe and healthy recovery.

Dr. Roll's office has been very helpful & supportive in helping me with insurance approval and preparing for surgery. I have complete confidence in Dr. Roll's abilities. I agree with what others say. The doctor works hard and he is busy. He doesn't need to spend a lot of time chit chatting. At my preop visit, however, I did catch a very nice "hello" and a smile from him. He is experienced at this type of surgery and I know he will do an excellent job.
It's been five weeks since my surgery and my opinion hasn't changed. In fact, I like him more now. We had a "bonding" moment 1 week post op. I was constipated and had a hemorroid flare-up. Needless to say I was pretty miserable. Dr. Roll looked at my incision as I was telling him about this problem. I stood up to put my binder back on & sure didn't feel like moving! He said "Do you want me to help you?" My gut reaction was to say no, I didn't want any one seeing or touching me. I let him help me, he was sitting in a chair and I walked over to him. He leaned against me and reached around and put my binder on for me. It might sound silly but I remember that his helping me really calmed me down. He was so sure that I was going to be OK. I really wanted to believe him, but I have failed so many times before. It is hard to trust again, but I did. I've noticed that when we interact now it's much more relaxed. I laugh more, he smiles more. Whether it was him or me that changed, I don't know. Maybe a little bit of both!
