Jogging/running for the first time?

Ok...so since I have lost so much weight and going to the gym I have noticed I have to push harder to feel the workout and I hardly sweat.  I have been having the urge to jog or run on the treadmill but I am scared.  I have not jogged or ran since high school!  How did any of you approach this?

I remember first moving to incline on the treadmill eventually getting to 15 and then working on more speed which made me burn more calories and sweat like crazy. Then, with solid endurance, one day I just decided to try and ran...and have not stopped since!  Try to get five miles in at least five, mostly six days a week.  Did have to purchase UnderArmor support gear as I need to stifle the clapping sound my extra skin makes!  My advice, when you feel it is time, try it, have fun with it and listen to your body!

Exactly what Tom said, but I add this:  Go to a running store and get properly fitted with good running shoes.  For around $100 you can get a great shoe and possibly keep injury away!

Congrats on ur weight loss...it is truly impressive!! As far as jogging/running  I started with the C25K program, it is an 8 week program to help train ANYONE for a 5K, I now have run several as well as 10K's 5 milers and even 2 1/2 Marathons! I suggest you take the Nike Advice..Just Do It!!! Best of luck on this

Here's the running part of my exercise story -

Surgery was March 2014. I was only allowed to walk for the first 6 weeks. No elliptical, no running, no lifting, nothing except walking. I started walking in the hospital by doing laps of the wing I was in. When I got home, I started doing laps of my street. Each lap was about a quarter of a mile. I bundled up since it's cold here in March! Once I could do a mile, I switched to the gym and started walking on the treadmill.

On the treadmill, I started at 2mph, 1% incline, and 35 minutes. I went three days a week and increased my time by 5 minutes each time until I could do an hour. Once I could do an hour, I started increasing my speed, .1mph at a time. I kept doing this, .1mph at a time, until I was close to 4mph (3.8) and then I tried running. And I could do it! (I was past the 6 week mark at this point.)  I weighed about 255 at this point.

From there, I started to work on intervals. I would run 45 seconds out of each 5 minute block. Then I increased it to a minute, and so on and so forth. Eventually I switched to Couch to 5k to follow those intervals. In June 2014, I signed up for my first 5k and made that my goal. I wasn't super thrilled with this, though so...

One weekend, when I was visiting my parents to help them out, I tried running outside. I switched to the Zombies Run 5k Training plan, and I ran outside. This was in August 2014. It was an epiphany. A revelation. It was amazing and I was hooked. I haven't been back to the treadmill since. I know I'll have to eventually once there's snow and/or ice on the ground, but I'm loving the outside now.

I ran my first 5k in October 2014. The course time limit was 60 minutes, so my goal was to complete within the limit and to not die. I was victorious and my time was 54 minutes and some seconds! I was (and still am) stupidly proud of myself for this.

---

I wrote that a few months ago.  Since then I've been working through a "sub-30 minute 5k" training plan that I found on Runkeeper.  Not because I have any hope of running it in 5k, but because it's a good plan.  I'm signed up for my next 3 5k races too, the next one is in about a month.  Eek!

OMG Gwen your story sounds like mine, when I got to run at 3.7 mph I thought I was gresed lighting. So pumped and impressed. The first time I finished a 5K and stood there and balled my eyes out. I now run regularly and love it, it is so good for you. Keep up the great work you will rock those 5Ks.

I have found recently though that I need to add some carbs to my diet or else I end up with excrutiating leg cramps from dehydration. Still not crazy carbs but I do have some.

When I first tried running/jogging, I would do whatever ratio I could muster (e.g. walk 2min, jog 15 sec, walk 2 min, jog 30 sec). Building up slowly over time helps both physically & mentally. I didn't join any training programs until I could jog for 3 solid miles and trained for each distance I've done over months... (e.g. 3 months training for a half, 5-6mo training for a full, followed an ultra program for my 50 miler). Good luck and keep at it!!

I am a runner and I am running from past 10 years and from personal experience I must say running is much better than workout. If you run regularly, there is no need to go to gym.

I haven't found this to be true at all.  There are so many muscle groups that running doesn't touch and it's important to have a balanced exercise regimen to build overall health and prevent injury.
