Topic: RE: Low Ferratin and B12 - 22 weeks

Good to know.  Until now I haven't been taking supplements and I've just started with Ferrous Sulfate (2x 300mg).  I'll follow-up with my OB and see if I can get the wheels in his head going to contemplate B12 and an Iron infusion.

at 14 weeks I increased my iron from one tablet a day to two a day.  I take vitron-c which is 65mg elemental iron and vitamin c to help absorb the iron.  My ferritin just keeps dropping at 14 weeks I was at 9.7

Hi there - thanks for your post.  How long have you been supplementing with the iron?  I will discuss the potential of an infusion and see what my OB thinks but it would be helpful to know how long it may take for levels to increase by supplementation orally vs. iv.

Hi, Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I am 24 weeks and also have a low ferritin level (6.6 my doctor says normal range is 15.0-205.0) but my iron level is within normal range.   My obgyn explained it like this... I have enough food on the table but the food in my cupboard is getting low (ferritin is the iron stores).  She said she would test my hemolglobin at 28 weeks and if that was low I would need an iron infusion.  I have been taking two iron pills a day 4 hours apart and my ferritin level has not gone up.

I hope this helps.

Topic: lap band and pregnancy?

Hello Ladies,  I was wondering if some of you guys could answer some questions for me. I am 3 yrs post op. I am now talking to my fiance about babies. Not now, but within a year. My questions are : what happens with the band? do they just empty it? would it be wise to expect a huge regain of weight? Nutrition wise for the baby does this effect anything?

Thanks in advance!

Angelica

I would also consider asking for IRON INFUSIONS....

Topic: Low Ferratin and B12 - 22 weeks

Hi everyone,

I am 22 weeks pregnant with my second child - first post-op (1.5 yrs out).  I've had a pretty unremarkable pregnancy aside from acute morning sickness (had with first also).  I had some lab work done recently as I am hypothyroid and need to closely monitor my TSH.

The latest results came back with low iron stores (6 when 41 is acceptable) and borderline low B12.  Just curious if anyone else had any issues during pregnancy after WLS.  I am supplementing with Ferrous Sulfate and sublingual B12 but wondering if its worth asking for B12 shots considering that they use cyanide as a binery agent in the B12 pills.

Any thoughts or comments based on your experience would be appreciated.

Thanks

Topic: RE: 2 yrs post op, only 50lbs down (twin pregnancy prior to 18 mos out)

I have a slightly different story, but I'll share anyway.  I was a lightweight, so I was about 10 lbs from goal when I decided to "let nature take its course" as far as birth control 6 months post op.  About a minute later I was pregnant.  I gained about 18 lbs while pregnant and it came right off after the baby came.  When I got back to decent eating (definitely not great though) I lost the last 10 lbs to get to my initial goal.  I'm still a little below that, and anytime I'm "good" with my eating, I still lose.  So, my sleeve definitely still works... when I do.  I've had little problem maintaining, but if I ever want to see my "dream goal" of 119, I'm going to have to dedicate myself to working for it.  Anyway, the good news is, even three years out, my sleeve is still there for me and works to help me maintain even when I'm not the best, and allows me to lose pretty easily when I put in the effort.  Congrats on the twins, good luck with the weight loss!

Congrats! I just had twins in November, starting to get back on the wagon. What was your experience in terms of weight loss between surgery and pregnancy and then after delivery? I'm only down 50lbs total after 2 years (got pregnant almost a year post-op), so it feels like I'm starting back at square one again... though, thankfully, I do still have restriction to help keep my portions from getting out of control. Now it's just a matter of choices and exercise.

Hi All,

I used to be a regular around here back around 2011 when I was prepping for and immediately after my VSG.  Not quite a year post-op, I found out I was pregnant with twins.  Needless to say, all my newly formed post-op eating habits had to go so I could fit in the ridiculously high caloric intake my OB wanted for the babies.  I was eating constantly just to try to hit the goals (I never did, but the babies were thriving, so it was fine).  As a result, my old eating habits came back, though thankfully, the VSG keeps the volume in check.

Now that I'm back in the groove of life with babies again, I'm trying to start back on the straight and narrow.  I'm just wondering if anyone here ran into a similar situation: you had the surgery, started to lose, and then got pregnant and that killed your rapid weight loss period?  Anyone?  And if so, were you suceessful in getting to your goal?

Please say yes :(.
