I developed the same problem and my Dr. ordered the new mask, no chin strap on my C-PAP mask.  My problem is the full mask is causing the skin on my nose to break down and be sore all the time (or worse)  We have to look into a different solution, maybe a new mask.

I'm having the same exact problem, and awake with my mouth and lips super dry!   It never happened before surgery and I adjusted very fast to my mask over 8 years ago. I'm going back to sleep lab at the end of the month for another evaluation to see if maybe there is too much air being forced through the mask. I'm sure it needs adjusted my now with my loss.  I don't want to go the chinstrap route...lol

I was a mouth breather before bipap, too.  But from the moment I tried bipap (and I mean even during my sleep test) I breathed through my nose and never had a problem until now.  I think I am going to order a full mask the next time I'm eligible to get another mask.  I have to wait about another month before I get a new mask.  Thanks for the input.

I am a mouth breather so I have a full mask, but I have heard people say they have used the white surgical tape and taped their mouth closed. I dont know that I would, but they say it works.

Topic: RE: SLEEP AIDS AND MUSCLE RELAXERS ARE A NO NO WITH APNEA
OK Sparkies...Here's the deal.
WHY would the SLEEP CENTERS give you a SLEEPING PILL on both nights if they were THAT dangerous? Everyone that takes any kind of narcotic or tranquilizer or muscle relaxer should also be educated about them and know they do indeed slow our respiratory rate. However, some folks have had apnea for years and years and have been taking these meds for years and years as well. The opinion of the safety of these combinations is as a mixed bag as is the fact Bari Doc's all over the USA have their own idea of who should be on what diet if any before surgery and what and when they should eat and or do after surgery as well as who uses pain pumps, belly brace bands after, who allows soda, caffiene,
etc.... so I suppose there is no right or wrong. I also hear of a wide variety of numbers and results and what is being called severe and what's moderate.BOTTOM LINE.............THESE BOARDS ARE FOR
OPINIONS AND OUR STORIES. We should all ask our doctor what he or she wants us to do, what's best for us, and then in a perfect world we should follow their orders.
I for one am going to take my Soma, as it's been at least an hour since my Tramadol's and Gabapentin's and I am going to go visit Mr. CPAP!
Goodnight

I have a strange issue going on.  Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.  I have used bipap for 6-7 years and adjusted to it extremely well from the very beginning.  However, since my surgery, my mouth opens, causing me to wake frequently.  I have never had this problem before.  In fact, I have had to start wearing a chinstrap.  I don't mind the bipap mask, but the chinstrap sucks.  Any ideas?

Topic: Is my Sleep Apnea Gone??!
I had surgery on 11-24-08 and have lost 100lbs since.  The other night I decided to see if my sleep apnea has improved.  I fell asleep without my cpap and asked my wife to watch me once I entered REM sleep.  She stated that I did not snore, never opened my mouth, and she could not detect any apneic episodes.  I have not used my cpap for 1 week now and I sleep well for 7 to 8 hours in any position, with no dry mouth and I have energy during the day.  I do not want to have a sleep study until after I lose my last 80 lbs.  Is it possible that my SA has been cured?

Try putting your machine on the floor so the water runs down to the humidified and not into your nose.  Deoderant on the face is a great idea.

Try placing your machine on the floor, that why condensation will run down to the humidifier.

I've been on the CPAP for about 7 years now and am 6 months post op RNY. I've lost 60 pounds (I'm at 153) and I still need the stinkin' Cpap. I tried to nap today without it and kept waking myself up snoring. *sigh*. I was so excited with the thought of losing a bunch of weight and getting rid of the machine. I too am wondering if I'll every get rid of sleep apnea. Or if the lungs and muscles get used to having the air pumped into you.
