Topic: RE: how does one get used to a cpap?
HELLO ALL:
i was searching for this topic because I am going through a similar situation with my c-pap, i use the nasal pillows which still isn't comfortable for me (formerly used the one that covered my entire nose) and I can't use the darn thing!  Coupled with leaky heart valves, post nasal drip and allergies i am fatiqued throughout my day..some days worse than others.  It is really difficult to get used to this machine, i don't see how anyone can sleep with this thing on their heads!
I am really considering the surgery to remove my tonsils and adenoids to see if some relief can be obtained going this route.  All docs i spoke to say that it is a 50/50 chance it will help with the apneas.  At this point i think 50/50 is a better chance than, doing nothing and trying to use this machine for what seems like the rest of my life!

I had my sleep study and I was so severe the nurse came in and put me on the CPAP machine after 3 hours. I knew I had it after that, but was 10 days before I cold see my Dr to actually diagnose me. If your concerned call your dr and let them know. They do understand.

Thanks for the tips also.

Last night was my first night with my CPAP Machine.  Mine has a Ramp for 10mins, which means it doesn't go up to it's full steam or air or whatever till after 10mins.  I just stayed determined that I would at least keep it on for 1 hour.  Then I wouldn't look at the clock. Then finally 2 hours later I had to go to the bathroom and decided enough of that, I wanted to sleep, and shut it off thinking I would have some sleep to function today at work.  NOT, couldn't even have a half decent sleep without the dang machine.

I'm so looking forward to the day I can sleep all night with it and wake up refreshed.  Does it really take 6 weeks???

Thanks
Joyce

Try asking for a machine that has a "settling" mode. This starts the machine at a lower pressure and gradually increases over a set number of minutes. This way, you get to sleep at a lower pressure and by the time it reaches the desired level, you are asleep...hopefully. =)

I used to have the bipap and it was on a pretty high setting, but the settling mode increased over 45 minutes. If I tried to put the mask on at the desired pressure, I would gasp for air!!!! So, the settling mode saved me!

Now, the machine is set at a lower pressure and as a cpap--and it settles over 20 minutes.

Hope this helps!
Best of luck,
Heather

Hi,

I had my sleep study done on Feb 1st and by Feb 4th I was contacted about getting a cpap, which was before the follow up with my doc on Feb 6th.

I had a 2 part study - the first part without the cpap and the second with it - all in the same night.

I had my sleep study last night.  Lab tech wouldnt even give me a hint as far as how I did.  She said they would contact me in approx 2 weeks with the results and to let me know if I have to come back for part 2.   Does it really take 2 weeks to interpret a sleep study?   Thanks in advance!

I have the full mask and HATE IT! Next time the company calls about it asking if everything ok, i am going to ask for the PILLOW one which just is for the nose. I End up midway during the night taking the mask off as i feel like im going to suffocate!

Topic: wet face
My face sweats under the nose mask of my c-pap. It is worse when I use the humidifier. I recently found out if I put (sounds too weird but it is true)deodorant on my face where the mask sits, my face stays dry. It has not bothered my skin or given me any blemishes. It has made wearing the mask easier. Has anyone else had this problem?

I agree with checking out different masks.  I used one called a pillow cushion.  I also wore it when I was in bed watching tv and on my laptop.  It helped me get used to it plus I did breath better when it was on.  I got to where I didnt like being without it....
