Topic: RE: I HAVE SLEEP APNEA AND I'M CONSIDERING RNY
I have sleep apnea and have the nose mask, not the full mask. I use the ramp up system so it is easier to fall asleep. One thing I found interesting is that I asked my doctor if the weight loss would take care of the sleep apnea and she said not necessarily. I was told that most people who have sleep apnea inherit this trait from their parents. They have it from birth, but it is not until middle age (sorry, it hurt my feelings too) that symptoms start to show up, the snoring, fatigue, etc. I had a bad EKG that tipped off the doctors to the sleep study necessity. I was only getting 60 percent oxygen with the normal being 97 percent. At that low rate, your brain and your heart are affected and lack of concentration and fatigue set in. So, while I am looking forward to life changes with weight loss after my surgery, I'm not necessarily going to be able to give up the CPAP. We may be friends for life.

Hi! I have some GREAT sleep study pictures that i took. I think it will be helpful for people who are going for their sleep study to get an idea of what it will be like. Just look in my profile pics. Good luck with everything.

Thank you everyone for the advice. I am still trying, but have noticed something weird. I am iron deficient and I started taking iron pills which is fine, but I used to have a coronic cough that I thought was asthma. It would get really bad after eating or temperture change. Since I have started on the iron the cough has really subsided (strange) and my breathing is better. Perhaps that will make it easier with the machine. I normally have very little trouble falling asleep and when I do, I sleep like the dead...hopefully this is going to make wearing the thing easier and not feel like I am be "snuff out"lol.

Lor, I do sleep better but I hate the stupid machine. My husband is also having a problem & has been through 4 masks. Your Dr. can give you a small sleeping pill which helps. You can try different masks. I've gone through two. Even though you are a mouth breather, you can get a smaller nasal mask/pillows w/.chin strap. Just keep trying a few hours every night or even during the day. I've had mine for 2 months & still have trouble falling asleep with it. It also can wake me up when it gets to full pressure or I move. I set the ramp timer to the longest time I could -45 min. But even if you're using it for a short time, that helps. Little-by-little, I guess. You can also get your!Dr. to change your basic machine, depending on what your major complaint is. I'm with you. It's a real pain! Islander

if you are a mouth breather like me ask for a full face mask its the best cause you dont have to worry about keeping you mouth closed.

Topic: RE: 25 an have sleep apena
I just had a repeat sleep study last Friday. Although I don't have the official results yet, it seems I still have some apnea. I am sleeping better and better every day however.

I would try to wear it when you are resting. Wear it while watching tv etc so you begin to adjust to breating through your nose. I have had one now for about 8 years. I learned to use it to the point I couldn't fall asleep without it. My biggest relearning point was not becoming twisted up in the hose as I slept. I now sleep in only a few positins and only turn so I won't tangle myself.

I experienced a lot of problems with the mask as well...would get panic attacks and decided not to use it. I'm 26 and the diagnose wasn't a fun one for me either. I'm about 6 weeks out from surgery and can already tell a huge difference in my quality of sleep....hang in there!!!

Topic: RE: Sleep Apnea and surgery
I have sleep apnea and couldn't tolerate the CPAP either. I wasn't using anything to treat it and it didn't cause any trouble with getting approval for my surgery. In fact...it made my dr.'s recommend it more strongly because of the stress put on the heart.
