Thank you everyone, especially Debbi. Thank you guys for being there when I needed you and was ready to come back. Debbi you told me last night that I was an inspiration to you. I was so surprised, you have been a great inspiration to me. You have struggled by have never given up. I am so glad you encouraged me to go to the OH event in Dallas. There were many faces I knew and many unfamiliar ones. I learned so many good things and had a wonderful time.

Sorry Its been a while since I have posted, its been really rough. Just when I was getting back on track with the exercise and getting back on the boards my mom suddenly and unexpectedly passed away on Aug 4th the day before my 20th wedding anniversary. Its been really tough, she the one who made it possible for me to have my life saving surgery.

I still can't believe she is gone.  I am thankful that I was able to see her before she passed. I found out how bad she was early Tuesday morning at work. I work with a great bunch of people, they took care of me and made sure I was able to go home. I called my husband and told him the news and he met me back at the house and made sure I was flying home by noon. I was picked up at the airport and we went straight to the hospital.

I walked it looked like she was sleeping. I went up to her and was telling her I was there and that I loved her. She opened her eyes for the first time in a day, omg they got so big, she knew it was bad. She said some words I don't even know what, God I wished I remembered what. She grabbed me in her arms and I just held her. That was the last time she spoke or attempted to hold any of us. My husband brought the kids down on Friday to see her, it was pretty tough she was in ICU and it was pretty scary for them, even though they are teenagers. We were able to move her into a regular room the next morning so that the younger grand kids could come and see her. I didn't think my kids would be able to see her again they were pretty traumatized. But I think for the younger kids sakes they did. At this point mom would look your way when you spoke to her, this was on Saturday. My husband had to leave on Sunday with my kids. My sister, brother and I spent all Sunday night with her she wasn't doing so good. Monday we made sure to get her arraignments done as she would want us to. We didn't know how much longer we were going to have her. We went back latter on then went home to take care of the kids. That night my sister and I decided to go up and tuck her in. We sat with her for a few hours, she looked better and more peaceful then she had in a week. The next morning just before we were leaving the house to go see her we got a call from the hospital mom passed away that morning at 955. Everyone was in shock how fast things went, she walked into the hospital with a really bad headache and then she was gone in a week.

I really miss her and can't believe she is gone. We lost our dad just a little over 2 years ago. You can never say I love you to anyone to much or say one last kind word or do any last kind deed, you never know when it will be the last time.

Thanks you guys for being there for me even when I could be on the boards. Just knowing you guys were there for me met a lot. I'm determined to get back in the the swing of thing and on track. I need to do this for myself and my mom. She was the one who made my second chance possible and I want her to continue to be proud of me. I know there will be good days and bad days. I'm just going to take them one day at a time.

JULY 2009

July 26

Yesterday was my 3rd year Surgiversay!! WOW, it just seemed  like yesterday. I still have trouble getting it wrapped around my brain that I'm no longer the size I was. It wasn't until a few months ago when I saw a picture of my husband and myself (the one on my avatar) that I realized how others saw me today.

Thank you everyone for helping me and supporting me in my journey. I have met a lot of great Friends though my journey.

Lorraine

July 18

My training is going really well, I am up to run/walking 4 miles in 68 minutes. Now I will never be a track star but feel pretty good about my accompaniments. I walked 2 them as 14 minute miles and the rest at a slower rate due to my knees. If I keep this up I will be ready for the 1/2 marathon in Nov. I think I might have to try a different running shoe, one with more padding on the ball of the foot.

July 11

I've been doing really good going to the gym to train, yea for me. Hubby just told me last night that his traveling time has been moved from Sept to Aug and it looks like he will be gone on our 20th Anniversary Aug 5th. We had both asked for that whole week off. That wasn't easy for me since I work 2 jobs. He said he will be gone for 3 week and then home for 1. I told him his company needs to fly me out to be with him in Sacramento Ca since its our Anniversary, lol, like that will happen. Oh well I well just have to deal with it, but it sucks.

July 06

Well I started back in the gym yesterday. I knew I didn't have a lot of time but made myself go. I ran and walked one mile, then I was out of time (had to go to second job). I felt really good. So that was day 1 of my training for the half marathon on Nov 1.

Got to go to the DFW dinner last night at Joe's Crab Shack. It was go to see some familar faces and meet some new ones for me. I'm trying to retouch basis with my OH family.

Wow its been a really long time since i blogged or posted anything. I have been letting life get in the way, between working way to many hours, daughters senior year and training new highers. I have slipped back into some of my bad eating habits which I will be rectifying now. I have gained back around 10 pounds which I will loose, I was in shock this morning when I got back on the scale. Its a good thing that my daughter and I have a goal to do a 1/2 marathon on Nov 1st and maybe the full one on Dec 14th. I think its a good goal and it will be a good bonding experience.

DEC 08

Dec 28, 2008

Its been a while since I have been on Oh. On Dec 02, they fixed my hernia. It was an open procedure and they found a second smaller one. I stayed with my mother-in-law for a week and a half. I think that helped speed up my recovery, she had a great recliner and one of those adjustable beds. I was released to go back to work on the 16th as my job is a sit down one and I was released to go back to my second job on the 22nd. Boy could I have milked it for time off if I wanted to since the total recovery time is 6 weeks, this not picking up anything more then 4 lbs sucks.

Its been a rough couple of months at work 2 of us have spend a weekend in the hospital and also had several weeks off from work. We lost an officer, we buried him on Dec 17th, he was 29, he decided to end his own life with his service weapon. None of us at work know why. I feel bad for his family, he left a 2 yr daughter and his mother behind with no benefits. He did the ultimate selfish act and none of us at work knew he was hurting. We are short by 6 officers and one dispatcher, and in a small department it makes it difficult. One of our dispatchers will be out sometime in Jan for a surgical procedure and our boss baby is due the end of Feb so she will be gone for 9 weeks. I not looking forward to being in charge.

Wow I haven't been on Oh in a while, need to be more diligent on that one. Here is the latest updates on me:

Last weekend I spent in the hospital it was non WLS related. I started having pain in my lower left groin area just before we were getting on the bus to Chaperon the band. I thought it was just gas or that dinner just didn't sit right, normally that would pas in an hour or so, no such luck, buy the 3rd quarter I was in agony. One of the other band moms was leaving during the 4th quarter and she took m home. I thought that maybe a hot shower would help relax me and help me to feel better. Next thing I know I was running to the bathroom, boy that was the first time I had thrown up in 21/2 years and it was the first time pain made me do that. Well the shower didn't help, I ended up calling my hubby (who had stayed to finish chaperoning the game) they had just arrived back at the school, I told him that he needed to get home now and take me to the emergency room. I know I scared him, I have a really high tolerance for pain.

I went to a great hospital (Richardson Regional) it is a new hospital, around 2 in the morning. I didn't have to wait at all. Saw the

ER Dr, who said that it looks like I had a hernia with a bowel obstruction. He paged the surgeon to come and check me out. After 3 does of morphine (didn't even cut the pain) the surgeon arrived and said I had a Inguinal Hernia and if he couldn't get it pushed back in that I would have to have emergency surgery. He did a cat scan to check it out then he manipulated my intestines and pushed it back out for the hernia (omg did that hurt). When he was done it was like almost instant pain relief, Dr said that in about 10 minutes it would really hurt again as the blood flow was returning to the intestines, well he was right, damn him.

He did another cat scan to make sure it had gone back into its proper place, and he wanted to wait a week or 2 at most before they did my repair surgery. I had the most angry looking intestines that he has ever seen (definition: they were really swollen) had to laugh over that comment. Dr told me that it was better to wait until the swelling goes down before they do the repair surgery it lest risky that way. They admitted me into the hospital, (the hospital is new and under construction still so they don't have room for patients yet so they needed up sending me via an ambulance to the other hospital.) By Sunday morning everything was working ok and let me go home around 10am.

I saw a different surgeon on Thursday, he said that the ER surgeon had bought me a little bit of time, but the chance of the intestines slipping was great. They wanted to give me the next Tuesday surgery date but I have too much to do so they will be doing it Dec 02. They will be doing it open procedure because the risk of high failure rate of laparoscopy repairs is high and its hard to fix a repair plus the incisions won’t be that large anyway. The recovery time is 6 weeks but because I have a sit down job I can go back to work at 2 weeks if everything is going fine and I feel up to it.

This really comes at a bad time, as I have almost nothing done for Christmas (have to wait on those paychecks and all). I will be rushing to get as much done this week before my 2 weeks of down time. I will be staying with my mother-in-law for probably the 2 weeks recovery time, it will be easier on me plus hubby won’t worry about me. Bonus to me is she has recliners (much easier to get out of) and one of those beds that go up and down and recline.

Inguinal Hernias
Inguinal (pronounced: in-gwuh-nul) hernias are more likely to occur in guys than girls. More than 70% of all hernias that occur are inguinal hernias, which means that a part of the intestines protrudes through an opening in the lower part of the abdomen, near the groin, called the inguinal canal. In guys, the inguinal canal is a passageway between the abdomen and the scrotum through which a cord called the spermatic cord passes (the testicles hang from the spermatic cord). In girls, the inguinal canal is the passageway for a ligament that holds the uterus in place. Nearly all cases of inguinal hernias in teens are due to a congenital defect of the inguinal canal. Instead of closing tightly, the canal leaves a space for the intestines to slide into.

If you have an inguinal hernia, you might be able to see a bulge where your thigh and your groin meet. In guys, the protruding piece of intestine may enter the scrotum, which can cause swelling and pain. Other symptoms of an inguinal hernia might include pain when you cough, lift something heavy, or bend over. These types of hernias require surgery to repair; in fact, inguinal hernia operations are the most common type of surgery performed on kids and teens.

COMMON QUESTIONS, CONCERNS & INFO FOR WLS

I would also say for those researching WLS, to examine all the surgeries and surgery types available. CHOOSE the surgery type for you and you’re "after" surgery life.

Decide which surgery fits your life style and the way you want to live. (Look at the requirements after surgery and stick to them.) Surgeons will NOT do this research for you! SOME of them will not present a balanced picture of all the surgeries. Decide what is best for you and your lifestyle, ask questions but do your own investigation.  try not to stress too much! TO-DO LIST BEFORE SURGERY SUGGESTIONS

Here are some things you might want to do before surgery:
get a comprehensive list from surgeon on the do and don't meds
get a list from nut/surgeon on what you diet is at the different stages
check with hospital to see what they provide you during you in hospital stay
shop for staples for the family and yourself after surgery
(you might want to make sure you have at least a few weeks worth so you don't have to shop real soon after surgery)
record your measurments so you have a good starting point to go by on your progress

SUGGESTED THINGS TO BRING TO THE HOSPITAL:
loose clothing to go home in
pillow for the car ride (makes it more comfy)
slippers
toiletries
Lip balm
flushable wet wipes
long handled tongs (to use with wipes to keep you clean after the bathroom)
through away camera for before and after pics

SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR DIFFERENT EATING STAGES:
ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR NUT/DR FOR  YOUR LIST OF DOES AND DON'TS ON FOOD

When you first start eating solids you might get in a few bites to 1oz at a time, by around 6 months out you should be able to eat around 4 oz (depends upon how dense and for some it might be sooner or latter on). By around a year 1 to 1½ cup (about the size of a small lean cosine) this information was given to me by my nut.

clear liquid stage: clear broth, clear juice, clear soup, sf Jell-O, sf popsicles
full liquid stage: cream soups (strained), sf yogurt (strained), milk, soy milk, sf pudding, protein drinks
purer: anything that can be blended to baby food consistency
soft foods: things easy to chew like soft cheeses and ground meats
full foods: foods cut up to about the size of a pencil eraser  and chewed up finely

Myth Muscle weighs more than fat.
Truth:
Muscle is more dense than fat, therefore taking up LESS room.  One pound of muscle weighs the same as one pound of fat.  Just as one pound of feathers weighs the same as one pound of bricks.  The difference is in the VOLUME.  Fat will take up A LOT more space than muscle.

KETOSIS:

Plateaus/Stalls: Here is some good information I found on plateaus/stalls, everyone goes though periods of stalls which are not plateaus. The body going through an adjustment period and is loosing inches. MEASURE MEASURE! We have stalls throughout our weight loss journey; first one usually is about 3 weeks out. Here is a great detailed article on the subject:
www.weightwatchers.com/util/art/index_art.aspx?abnum=1&art_id=23561

HAIR LOSS: Hair loss may be a temporary problem for some patients within the first three to twelve months after the operation, usually starts around the 3rd month. This is largely due to vitamin deficiency (and surgery). There is no specific remedy other than proper nutrition and multivitamin supplements. Good news is that the new hair growing in is pushing out the old hair, hence the hair loss. Upping protein and taking biotin will not keep your hair from falling out but will help the new hair grow in faster and healthier. Take this time to maybe get a new short sassy hair cut, used cute hats and scarves or maybe a pretty wig. Try not to stress out too much, it will end.

Vitamin and/or iron deficiency: This may occur in a mild form in as many as 40 percent of patients after gastric bypass. Iron and some vitamins, most notably Vitamin B-12, are primarily absorbed in the stomach and upper part of the small intestine which is bypassed. Both the vitamin and iron deficiencies are easily treated by either oral supplementation or injections. Women who are regularly menstruating will need additional iron supplements. (info taken from OH complications listed on home page)

Vitamin and iron deficiencies are uncommon after stapled gastroplasty because, with this operation, the food passes through the stomach and small intestine in the normal way.

Low calcium and protein levels and deficiencies in fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E) are known to occur after distal gastric bypass. Gas, flatulence and diarrhea may be more prominent after distal gastric bypass.

LAB TESTS:
(Not to be construed as medical advice.  This list includes labs suggested regularly for gastric bypass patients)

Regularly (every 3-6 months depending on your previous results), yearly as the further you are out and not having any problems. Keep track of any levels that are declining from one set of tests to the next, even if not yet in the low range.  Make any corrections necessary in your diet and vitamin regimen before the levels get too low.

B vitamins

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(Redirected from Vitamin B) Jump to: navigation, search B vitamin supplement tablets B vitamin supplement tablets

The B vitamins are eight water-soluble vitamins that play important roles in cell metabolism. Historically, the B vitamins were once thought to be a single vitamin, referred to as vitamin B (much like how people refer to vitamin C or vitamin D). Later research showed that they are chemically distinct vitamins that often coexist in the same foods. Supplements containing all eight are generally referred to as a vitamin B complex. Individual B vitamin supplements are referred to by the specific name of each vitamin (e.g. B1, B2, B3 etc ).

Vitamin Name Deficiency effects
Vitamin B1 thiamine Deficiency causes beriberi. Symptoms of this disease of the nervous system include weight loss, emotional disturbances, Wernicke's encephalopathy (impaired sensory perception), weakness and pain in the limbs, periods of irregular heartbeat, and edema (swelling of bodily tissues). Heart failure and death may occur in advanced cases. Chronic thiamine deficiency can also cause Korsakoff's syndrome, an irreversible psychosis characterized by amnesia and confabulation.
Vitamin B2 riboflavin Deficiency causes ariboflavinosis. Symptoms may include cheilosis (cracks in the lips), high sensitivity to sunlight, angular cheilitis, glossitis (inflammation of the tongue), seborrheic dermatitis or pseudo-syphilis (particularly affecting the scrotum or labia majora and the mouth), pharyngitis, hyperemia, and edema of the pharyngeal and oral mucosa.
Vitamin B3 niacin Deficiency, along with a deficiency of tryptophan causes pellagra. Symptoms include aggression, dermatitis, insomnia, weakness, mental confusion, and diarrhea. In advanced cases, pellagra may lead to dementia and death.
Vitamin B5 pantothenic acid Deficiency can result in acne and paresthesia, although it is uncommon.
Vitamin B6 pyridoxine Deficiency may lead to anemia, depression, dermatitis, high blood pressure (hypertension), water retention, and elevated levels of homocysteine.
Vitamin B7 biotin Deficiency does not typically cause symptoms in adults but may lead to impaired growth and neurological disorders in infants.
Vitamin B9 folic acid Deficiency results in a macrocytic anemia, and elevated levels of homocysteine. Deficiency in pregnant women can lead to birth defects. Supplementation is often recommended during pregnancy. Researchers have shown that folic acid might also slow the insidious effects of age on the brain.
Vitamin B12 cobalamin Deficiency causes macrocytic anemia, elevated homocysteine, peripheral neuropathy, memory loss and other cognitive deficits. It is most likely to occur among elderly people as absorption through the gut declines with age; the autoimmune disease pernicious anemia is another common cause. It can also cause symptoms of mania and psychosis. In rare extreme cases, paralysis can result.

Health benefits

The B vitamins often work together to deliver a number of health benefits to the body. B vitamins have been shown to:

Together, they also help combat the symptoms and causes of stress, depression, and cardiovascular disease.

All B vitamins are water soluble, and are dispersed throughout the body. Most of the B vitamins must be replenished daily, since any excess is excreted in the urine.[6] A six year cobalamin store can be found in the liver, despite its water soluble nature.[citation needed]

SUGGESTED VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS AFTER WLS: (used with permission from Melting Mama) http://meltingmama.typepad.com/wls/files/vitamins-mineral-recommendations.pdf

Signs and symptoms Dehydration:
Mild to moderate dehydration is likely to cause:
Dry, sticky mouth
Sleepiness or tiredness — children are likely to be less active than usual
Thirst
Decreased urine output — fewer than six wet diapers a day for infants and eight hours or more without urination for older children and teens
Few or no tears when crying
Muscle weakness
Headache
Dizziness or lightheadedness

Severe dehydration, a medical emergency, can cause:
Extreme thirst
Extreme fussiness or sleepiness in infants and children; irritability and confusion in adults
Very dry mouth, skin and mucous membranes
Lack of sweating
Little or no urination — any urine that is produced will be dark yellow or amber
Sunken eyes
Shriveled and dry skin that lacks elasticity and doesn't "bounce back" when pinched into a fold
Low blood pressure
Rapid heartbeat
Fever

In the most serious cases, delirium or unconsciousness

Unfortunately, thirst isn't always a reliable gauge of the body's need for water, especially in children and older adults. A better barometer is the color of your urine: clear or light-colored urine means you're well hydrated, whereas a dark yellow or amber color usually signals dehydration.

When to seek medical advice:
If you're an adult, call your doctor if:

You're not able to keep liquids down for 24 hours.
You've been vomiting for more than two days.
You're vomiting blood.
You're dehydrated. Signs of dehydration include excessive thirst, dry mouth, deep yellow urine or little or no urine, and severe weakness, dizziness or lightheadedness.
You notice blood in your bowel movements.
You have a fever above 101 F.

FULL VS. HUNGER
During surgery they cut the nerves that help tell us when we are full and hungry, it takes a while for those feelings to come back. It is very important when you are a new pos-op to measure you food so you don't over eat and hurt your new tummy. Most people get the sensation of fullness back or indicators that you are full like burping, hiccups and such. When you are first out what you think is hunger is not true hunger, its head hunger. Most people get that hunger feeling back (I think people get this at different times). Some people don't get it back (I haven't) I eat by the clock. When you are first out you can eat a few bites to a few ounces, by around 6 weeks or so (estimate) you can eat 2-4 ounce, around 6 months around 4-6 ounces. At about a years time you can eat 1 up to 11/2 cups (about a small size lean cuzine) (stick to your plan that was given to you by your dr/nut)

Okay, first you subtract your goal weight from your start weight.  This determines that you had 170 pounds to lose.  Then, you figure out how many pounds you've lost by subtracting your current weight from your start weight and find that you have lost 146 pounds (awesome!).  Next you do the following:
weight lost divided by weight needed to lose equals percentage of excess weight lost
IN YOUR CASE
EXAMPLE: 146 divided by 170 equals 86% of excess weight lost

Obstruction of the opening of the stoma: This rare complication occurs in less than 1 out of 100 gastric bypass patients and can occur when a piece of food becomes lodged in the stoma. When this happens, the piece of food is removed through a tube (endoscope) passed from the mouth into the stomach.   (No medical advice is intended, info is from oh)

Today is my 2 year Surgery Anniversary boy has it flown by fast, it doesn’t feel like it’s been that long. I am pretty happy with my weight lose journey it was filled with ups and downs but I have no regrets.  I went from 320 to 154, size 28-30 to a size 6-8 in pants, 4X to a small-medium in tops

I am happy and proud of myself that I had the courage to make these changes in my life. I have my quality of life back and can do anything I set out to do. My husband loved me before and loves my now. He doesn’t care that I don’t have in girls anymore and have lots of extra skin; I am the only one who cares about those things. Oh well at least I look good dressed, its amazing what you can hind behind clothes that fit you right lol.

So anyone else looking into having life saving WLS, do lots of research and pick which surgery fits your lifestyle. Be your own advocate for your life and health. WLS surgery is not an easy or quick fix diet it is a life style change. Moderation is the key to any WLS. Be realistic with your expectations, it took a long time to put the weight on, your body will not be perfect afterwards but its better then not being around anymore. Congrats to having the perseverance, diligence and courage to make those life changes.

I have decided to change my weight loss goal from 148 to 154 since my body seems to like to be between 154-156. I have nothing to complain about since I wear a size 6-8 pants and a size small to med top.

Wow it’s been a really long time since I have posted. It’s been really hit or miss with OH for me, mostly I’m just lurking. I haven’t felt like I could be very supportive, there has been tons of things going on in my life, I have felt like I’ve been living on a roller coaster. My 2 yr anniversary is just a few days away, can’t believe it’s been that long already. I don’t know if I will get to my goal of 148, I only seem to be able to get down to 154. I go up 2-4 pounds then back down to 154. I am ok if I don’t loose any more weight. I wear a size 6-8 just depending upon the style in pants and a small-medium top which is pretty damn good. I started my journey at wearing size 28-30 pants and a 4x in tops. I’m have nothing to hold my head down in shame about, I can walk proudly now, I have accomplished so much and have my life back. My future goals is to at least get my girls fixed and my varicose veins taken care of anything else is just icing on the cake.

                 WOW MOMENTS!!!

I was getting brave this weekend, I pulled out my pants I saved from pre-surgery. Wow did I get a shock, I couldn't believe how big they were, its hard to wrap around my brain that I was that big. Well I pulled the suckers on and I could fit into one leg, granted it was a tight fit, but I fit!!!!. As soon as I get a camera I'm going to take a picture of it for my blog. I also went dress shopping and can we say size 6 yea!!

I'm a little frustrated, getting off that last 10 pounds is torcher. I go down 2 and then back up, it makes me want to scream.

                      WOW MOMENTS:
Well I'm officially a size 8 and around 9 pounds for goal. I never thought that I would be that size again and I really don't want to be smaller size but since I'm short I might get into a smaller size when I get to my goal, which is a healthy weight for me If you add the 20 pounds of skin on that I have and the extra bone mass too lol.

I CAME TO THE REALIZATION THAT I AM HALF THE WOMEN I USED TO BE AND THIS IS A GOOD THING , NORMALLY THIS IS NOT A POSITIVE BUT IN THIS CASE IT IS AS IT IS IN THE LITERAL SENSE!

WOW moment for me, my daughter said I was little yesterday and her friend is calling me a beast (apparently that’s a good thing lol). Daughter said that all her friends are saying how good I was looking and they and she were proud of me. I wanted to cry happy tears.

I started the 5-day pouch challenge with some WLS friends. I'm doing it to detox and get myself more on track. I want to loose that last 15 pounds damn it!! I just hope that this 5 day thing helps clean out my system. I don't plan on loosing any weight this week but it sure would be a bonus.
