Topic: Vegetarian and Cannot Tolerate Whey Protein: HELP!

I am 11 weeks post-sleeve. Lifelong lacto-ovo vegetarian (who gags on cows milk and the taste/smell of eggs; as ingredients, though, I consume them). I've been on 40mg omeprazole (for reflux) since well before my VSG. Initially, I thought all my digestive issues were due to reflux (belching 24/7, bloating, nausea) and feared I'd need a revision to bypass. Now, I'm thinking that at least part of my issues are from all the whey protein I've been trying to consume, which leave me unable to reach my fluid and protein goals.

Yesterday, I went whey-free and found I don't bloat nearly as badly. HOWEVER - plant-based proteins have so many more carbs! I'm not sure how to reach the 80g protein leven my doctor suggests while keeping my carbs low enough to stay in ketosis.

How many grams of proteins, carbs and fats are you all eating daily? What helps you strike the right balance if whey protein isolates are not an option? I see my nutritionist in 2 weeks but, I'd love some input from anyone else who has gone through this!

I'm struggling! I am 11 weeks post-sleeve. Lifelong lacto-ovo vegetarian (who dislikes cows milk and the taste/smell of eggs; as ingredients, though, I consume them). All that said, I'm starting my first whey-free day today and am not at all certain I'll be able to reach the 80g protein my doctor suggests while keeping my carbs low enough to stay in ketosis. When trying to create my day's food plan, I can't seem to come up with vegetarian combinations that balance it all.

How many grams of proteins, carbs and fats are you all eating daily? What helps you strike the right balance if whey protein isolates are not an option?

As I've said before, the surgery groups are pretty active. Go to the group for the surgery you had and ask questions.

There doesn't seem to be an active group. I wish there was one as I believe I'll be struggling with regain from here on out.

Topic: RE: Easy Lunches to Pack!

I cannot reheat at work nor do I have access to a fridge - my lunch has to be in my lunch box with a cooler pack. So most days, I do about 1.5 cups of mixed green salad, 2 tablespoons of dressing and four ounces of chicken (usually those Perdue strips). I also pack a morning snack (carton of yogurt) and an afternoon snack (2 ounces of cheddar or other hard cheese).

You could put your chicken salad on the greens.

Keep on losing!

You can loose weight without keto if you try. It's not necessary to do a keto diet.

Hi everyone. I had gastric sleeve surgery back in 2014 and lost quite a bit of weight. unfortunately last year I gained 13pounds and I have been struggling to lose it again. I want to start the keto diet but I am not sure if it is ok to, having had this surgery. I obviously cannot eat the recommended amounts of food in almost all the keto diet plans, and do not know if intermittent fasting is a good idea for me. Any advice? thanks

I would start with your dietician although, if I had to venture a guess, the dietician will not be enthusiastic about keto. I understand the attraction of keto but I'm inclined to agree with many, cutting out food groups isn't a good idea. Better to be picky about what you put in your body. Eat carbs but avoid simple carbs like the plague. Eat a little fruit but be careful, it has sugar, albeit natural sugar but sugar is sugar. You don't need bread and pasta but if you have to eat them, do 100% whole grain or substitute a sandwich with a wrap and select a low carb tortilla (I personally like Ole Extreme High Fiber tortillas). Concentrate on protein and good fats, whole foods and lots and lots of water. Avoid processed and convenience foods at all costs. Read the labels. Feed your pouch good stuff and it will serve you well.

Also, track, track, track. Even if you do decide to do keto, track. Tracking, #1 keeps you mindful of what you are eating. I personally hate to have to put in something not nutritious in my tracker, it glares at you and says, "Why did you eat that?" But, I put it in nonetheless. #2, if I see an unexpected gain on the scale, I can look back and see, "oops, so many carbs for too many days in a row, need to cut back on that" so seeing what you are eating and evaluating that helps you stay on target,

Plan, plan, plan and meal prep. If you plan what you will eat and stick to your plan, an occasional indulgence won't throw you off and you know what you are eating most of the time is healthy.

I'm sure you know most of this but sometimes, it does help to see it in black and white and from someone else.

Topic: RE: Thiamine Deficiency aka Wernicke-Korsakoff - Can Anyone Else Relate?

I also had a problem with the PatchMD patches in that I went anemic from iron deficiency while using their product. My bariatric nutritionist does not recommend them.

About half of people who have had gastric bypass will develop a thiamine deficiency according to Bariatric Times magazine. It is also common in alcoholics. I recently began taking high doses because in addition to the gastric bypass I have another medical condition that increases my risk for thiamine deficiency. Although my thiamine levels are within the normal range this is not always a good indicator as people can have subclinical deficiencies.

I think surgeons and RDNs do us a disservice by not suggesting we take a thiamine supplement. Deficiencies usually take a long time to manifest.
