Hospital of Saint Raphael (COE) Hospital

I have only been a patient in one other hospital when I had my children. St. Raphaels staff was very caring I never had to wait for anything. After surgery you are hooked-up to many iv, I coulnd't beleive how much I needed to use the bathroom...someone was there every time I needed to go. The hospital was very clean, I even received Communion while I was there, which I found very thoughtful. I have only one complaint, it was very noisy. Your vitals are taken throughout the night when you stay in a hospital and if a nurse came into give you meds she was quiet, spoke softly etc. BUT when the person who takes your vitals comes in, the lights go on they speak very loudly I even had one lady taking care of my roomate at 3:00am and talking to the person out at the nurses station while she was in the room as if it was 3:00 in the afternoon. That truly is the only complaint I had about St. Raphaels. I realize there are "bells and whistles" that need to go off dugint he night, but the staff that comes into empty catheters and take vitals need to be MUCH MORE considerate of those whose rooms they are entering in the middle of the night. Whe I had my children, I had a nurse who came in to take my vitals with a flashlight so she wouldn't disturb me. she woke me up with a very quiet voice and I was able to fall back asleep when she left. Just common sense, if it's the middle of the night, keep your voice down.

I had issues getting nursing to respond to my call button - especially if I had to use the bathroom. While I was still attached to my IV and pain pump, I had to wait for the nurse to be free to come by and unhook me. Finally my husband showed me how to do it and I didn't have to rely on the nurses. I am an independent person, so I didn't mind helping myself. If the nurses had showed me how to do it in the beginning, I wouldn't have been as upset. Also, I was sharing a room with a noisey woman who did not have the same surgery as I did. She was loud, inconsiderate, had visitors way past visiting hours and worst of all, they gave her wonderful smelling meals when all I got was water, jello and/or broth.

The fact that it took two days for me to get a pillow and that some other items regarding my general health were overlooked - I can't say enough about the nurses and others that helped me through my ordeal. The hospital left some things to be desired - but the fact that those that cared for me on a one-to-one basis were so terrific - made the other things somewhat insignificant.
