Topic: Future VSG Patient Looking For Helpful Advice

Finally, after my year of researching bariatric procedures, going through the whole process with insurance, I have received my surgery date 3 months ago. My surgery date is on 3/29/2022 exactly 11 days from now. I was wondering if anybody could share some words of wisdom to maximize my progress And weight loss for the long haul. I started out at 396 And after going through the process with insurance And 3 months of liquid diet I am down to 345 with 11days left on the liquid diet. I am currently disabled due to my back. I can't walk or stand very long; I was told by my doctor that I need another back surgery. When I spoke to my back surgeon, I was told that I needed to have a fusion of my entire lower spine. My back surgeon informed me that after my previous surgery there was too much scare tissue (Different Surgeon) And he would have to perform the surgery from a different area. He told me that with my current weight the complication rate was way too high And that I would have to lose a substantial amount of weight before he would perform the surgery. So, I spoke to my Primary Doctor about the VSG procedure in length And decided to have it done. I am hoping after getting some of the weight off I am able to stand And walk a little bit more. I want to make sure that I am as successful that I can be so that after I lose the substantial amount of the weight, I can get my back procedure done.

I want to thank everyone here for sharing their experience. I'm thinking about buying a food processor. I've also looked through the pc richard and son reviews, and it seems that I'll choose exactly this brand. People are pleased with its products and the price is affordable. Does anyone use kitchen appliances of this brand?

Topic: RE: RNY revision

Hi MJ!

There is such a thing as a revision. I'm in the same boat as you--had my RNY in 2003, lost 125 lbs and have gained 45 lbs. I lost 35 lbs last year and was on a roll but injured myself working out. I also started menopause and of the 35 lbs that I lost, I've gained 20 back due to steroid medications and now hormone replacement therapy. I got back on track on my weight loss journey, but have not been able to get back to where I was last June. After months of trying I decided to look into RNY revision. I had a consultation with my original Dr's office in January and was told my options for a revision are an RNY Distal or a DS Loop. My insurance does not cover the loop, so we're going to try and get approval for the distal. I'm at the tail end of completing my qualifications for approval and I'm soooo hoping for a surgery date for April. I hope this helps!

Please feel free to add me as a friend! :)

Topic: RNY revision

Is there any info on having an RNY revision, or is this not something that can be done? I had my RNY back in 2001, and now have gained back about 60lbs of the 135, that I lost. I have just tried a pouch reset, but its not helping. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

MJ

I just started to meal prep. Mostly salads with chicken salad and tuna salad for lunch. For the evening, I have to fix full meals and just practice portion control. (mostly!)

Congratulations on your weight loss success! It might be the case that your WLS doctor does not have the equipment to follow up with you? Did they tell you why they won't work with you? I understand your frustration.

The best tip I can think of, to avoid food fatigue, is to do what I do for my whole family,..

Summerjoe,

Make one meal day#1, enough for 2 full meals,,( refrigerate leftovers for 3rd day). ON Day#2, make another completely different,( again for 2 meals - refrigerating left overs for 4th day. This way there are no leftovers over 2 days old. I have done this successfully by including a 3rd different meal on a day we don't an a repeat- so close...and delaying the meal not chosen on day #4.. til day #5. third meal would provide meal number 6. For that meal, I alternate chicken, pork and beef. Once a month we have some kind of fish based- usually a Gumbo or Jambalaya- and include chicken , polish sausage , w/ shrimp and crab.....(on days there's second serving, all one has to do is prepare a side dish, one could alternate those too!.. and meal is done. 6 days meals /3 days cooking/ time saver and food saver.I also eat liver 2-3 days a week n cycles... (on those days My hubs makes a spicy sandwich, or stuffed baked potato and Broccoli and cheese.( things i can not eat)

To prepare for surgery you should also learn to estimate portion sizes, especially of meats, since many of these surgeries end result is a high protein and lo carb diet. You should also investigate intermittent fasting.(not a diet-but a way of ingesting all foods) It works well for some people. I have seen my hubs drop 30 lbs in 3 months-( he has not had WLS) and is almost at goal he began with 12 hours and most days does 15-17 hour fasts, taking all food in then a short time frame. I had WLS 25 years ago and have begun it sporadically , helping me get on track to return to my chosen weight range and maintain loss. You can get info by going to You tube...and entering intermittent fasting in the search bar. I could urge you to look at several video's and gt information before trying.. it could accelerate your loss- Most surgeons ant a person to loose several #'s just before surgery to reduce the size of the liver..It lessens chance of nicking the liver... another good choice would be to use something like milk thistle to cleanse the liver and assist your liver to have processing space to pull the fat for elimination.

I am on the other side having had RNY 15 years ago. I have no appetite and throw away half of the 300 calorie meal. But when you still have the appetite and large enough stomach to eat and enjoy food meal prep would be very helpful.

My two cents ... Packaged processed foods are NOT the way to go. This a journey and we all make it on our own, but you should consider those that have gone before. When you "prep" your meals, you know exactly (usually to the gram) what what you will be eating. You know that the ingredients are exactly what you need to progress. Staying away from processed foods will be a habit you need to cultivate to ensure you are able to maintain your new lifestyle.

Yes, it's easy ... but I know that is how I got be over 350 lbs. I WILL NOT ever be again.

It's your journey, your decision, but be open to some wisdom.

Enjoy.
