I had my first post op sleep study about 6 months out, then approx. 6 months later and then again just recently. My breathing is much better, but I still have the sleep apnea and my CPAP level went from 15 to 10 and is staying at 10 becasue my recent study (last month) was RMI of 19, previous was 11 so I went up in number of times I stopped breathing during my sleep. I went off the CPAP myself and still had the feelings of being tired during the day. So back on it again for sometime. I am having a proceedure done by my Ear, Nose & Throat Doctor where he will shave down the Uvula and surrounding tissues to help eleviate the APNEA (NO GUARANTEE this will work) but I want to get off of the CPAP.

Anyone here been diagnosed with sleep apnea and central apnea? Does it ever get better? II have a CPAP I haven't used since my RYN 5 months ago but after reading the posts on this sight I think I'd better dust the thing off. My eyes have been reopened!  Does a wls person usually end up on a lower number on the machine? I quit using it because I couldn't get used to it or get a good night sleep.

Hi,

I've had sleep apnea for years. I was first diagnosed in 2004. I wore the mask for about a month and gave up. I went again for a sleep study at the end of last year and got another machine and again used it for a few weeks on and off and gave up. WELL..........I just took a stress test and was told that I have some muscle weakness of the heart and that it shows an old heart attack. I remember one night last November feeling pains across my back into my left arm but I attributed it to gas and indigestion.  I am at the end of my pre op tests and tomorrow I go for the cardiac consult to see what exactly I need to do. I am praying that this does not disqualify me for the rny surgery. I would think it would be one more reason why it is necessary but who knows what they are going to say. I can say one thing ...I am going to start using that cpap whether I like it or not. I want to live and hearing this from the pa on the phone freaked me out last night.

I'm sharing this so you can see how important it is to wear it. By the way I stop breathing 111 times in an hour. You'd think hearing that alone would have made me wear it.

Good luck and wear your mask!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am able to just use the little nasal pillow, but it's because I sleep with my mouth tightly suctioned shut.  If your mouth comes open while you sleep, the pressure's pretty ineffective.  They'd find that out during your titration session, and wouldn't recommend it for you, I believe.  I am a tummy sleeper with my head turned to the side, and the nasal pillow doesn't interfere with that.  I just have deeper sleep marks from the head harness LOL!

When you're awake, you have muscle tone that helps to keep your airway open.  When you sleep, you lose that tone, excess weight can bear down on your windpipe, and your attempt to suck in air creates a suction that literally closes off your breathing.  In other words, your own diaphragm is unintentionally suffocating you!  The positive pressure of the air replaces that muscle tone you have when you're awake, and keeps that windpipe open.

Good luck with your machine.

 Kathy!

I have just started this burping in the middle of the night.  I have been using nasal plugs however the style of my hair causes my mask to move.
