I doubt that you need the humidifier. You probably just need to get your pressure adjusted down. I have a humidifier with mine and I don't use it anymore because it dried me out more than it helped (quit using it 8 months ago). I had surgery a month ago and have already adjusted my pressure down one unit and am about to do it again, because I am getting dry mouth again at the lower pressure. I guess we are getting healed from our apnea! If you want to adjust it yourself, here's how: Unplug the unit from the rear. Hold down the pressure on/off and ramp buttons at the same time, insert the plug. Once the machine starts, let go, you are now in the pressure program mode. The minimum setting is 4, the max is 20. Push the ramp button until the setting you want shows in the window. Pull the plug and the machine will be reset to that number. Use a similar approach to adjust ramp time (can be set to zero) using the pressure on/off button.

Hi Jennifer, I am brand new to this board because my doctor just told me he thinks I have sleep apnea and has referred me for a sleep study. Anyways, I was reading through the posts here to try to get some info on sleep apnea and came across your post. This is a link to a sleep apnea quiz I found that may be helpful to you if you are still needing this info. http://www.sleephelpusa.com/quiz.phtml Take care, Tammy

Topic: Dry Mouth?
hi, I am 7 weeks post-op. I use my cpap machine religiously, but I have noticed that since the surgery, my mouth gets extremely dry. It is so dry that it wakes me up in the middle of the night. I tried sleeping without the cpap, it isn't so bad. Has anyone else experienced this, and do you think if I got a machine with a humidifier it would solve the problem?

I'm just wondering if anyone has had any luck getting around an insurance exclusion by claiming that WLS is a treatment for sleep apnea. My sleep study showed that I have severe sleep apnea with a significant drop in blood ox levels. I'm on CPAP now and it's saving my life, but I know I also need WLS to improve my health.

Mary, I believe sleep apnea can cause a whole host of problems. Using your CPAP will help you feel so much better. I know it is a pain at first but trying to use it every night and keeping it on longer and longer will help you adjust. I have been using one for eight years now. I don't lay down to close my eyes without putting it on. I take it with me if I am ever going to be sleeping away from home. I have had lap band surgery a bit over 3 months ago. I have lost 25 pounds. And of all the things I have hoped for as a result of losing weight, getting off my BIPAP never has occured to me. I don't mind using it at all, and would feel lost without it. Maybe someday I won't need it, but I am not worried about that. If your mask isn't fitting right or isn't a good kind for you that could be why you aren't tolerating wearing it. Have your home health person fit you for a new or different mask. Keep trying them till you find one you like. I use one that is called SIMPLICITY. It is small and just fits over my nose. It is a mask not the nose cannulas. But it is small. THe headgear is comfortable. Please try to use your CPAP. I am here for you if I can do anything to help you. Even if you want to email me each day and tell me how many hours you used it. Sorta like an accountablity thing. Hugs and Support Vicki in Indy

Cyndi, If you are grinding your teeth at night, you may want to talk to your dentist about being fitted for a night guard. This also helps ease morning headaches. Sam

I agree with the earlier post, your best bet is to talk with your physician. I have to use a c-pap and I don't snore. I have sleep apnea and am hypoxic when I sleep. My sister said I hold my breath and then let the air out. A sleep study is going to be the only way you can make sure it's sleep apnea.

I have had sleep apnea for several years now and cant get used to the cpap. My abdomen and legs/feet are very, very swollen and my pcp says lymphedema, but my pulmonologist seems to think its from my oxygen dropping when I sleep. He thinks if I could tolerate cpap it would get better. I also notice I have chest pains everyday and a deep cough, but since my ekg showed no significant heart problems the docs kinda blow me off when I complain. Could these be caused from the apnea too?
