My 1st mini-goal

May 09, 2008

Today I went up to town for a friend's grandson's bris and celebratory meal which consisted of rolls, salads, potato,  rice, green beans, and chicken. I ate from the cooked carbs as the chicken did not get put on the tanle until a good half hour after the other foods. Everything stayed in as I ate slowly and in very small amounts. I did not indulge in any cake or ice cream that was available.
I also stopped into my HMO to arranmge paperwork for some other medical issues - my ankle fusion follow-up and my monthly allergy shots.
I also looked to see of my blood test results were in - most were. My cholesterol was 168 and my HbA1c is now 4.3 after more than a year that it was at the high end of the range at 5.8.
Of course wheile I was there I had to weigh myself. I am now 88 K - a half a kilo loss since earlier this week when I saw the surgeon whose scale consistently is two kilo more than here.
And I am going to change my ticker to reflect the more "comforting" weight.

Three Month Update:

May 05, 2008

This morning I did blood tests and then went to see the surgeon. On his scale I weighed 90.5 kilo. He was happier than I was. I would have been happier if it was just 90 but the main point is the numbers are going LEFT so I have nothing to complain about at all. No reflux and although I am taking Ompradex in case of a marginal ulcer, I lay flat on my bed without the head raised and no food coming up in my sleep. Yahoo!
My daughter is planning her wedding for December. It will be interesting and exhilirating to see how much I lose by her special day. I won't even worry about what to wear until after Succot.

Bye-Bye Pesach.....

Apr 26, 2008

I survived but now it is over and time to get back on track with my vitamins and protein drinks. This past week I averaged about 40-60g protein a day and still lost about a kilo as of the weighing on the scale last Tuesday.
Since I have been taking the Omapradex I have only vomited once and that was because of "one bite too much". And now I am hungrier and eat.
Yesterday I ate:
fresh salad with cottege cheese
gefilte fish w/onoins and carrots
red bell pepper filled w/canned salmon
decaf coffeee w/1% milk and no sweetener
avocado with tuna and 1/2 bag potato chips
6 squares white chocolate
zuchini in tomato sauce and 5% soft salty white cheese   (similar to feta)
pistachio nuts
coffee B&J ice cream
tropical juice mixed w/water in a 1/2 L bottle.
No dumping or nausea, no hiccups or vomiting.
Today I hope to get myself back on track.

Pesach Week

Apr 22, 2008

I survived the "religious" weekend and ate barely a half a piece of matza and altogether one cup of grape juice at the Seder. I did have minor episodes of vomiting but after email contact with my surgeon (and I'm due to see him only May 5th), it was suggested that my vomiting could be as a result of not chewing well enough, eating too much, or an ulcer in or near the pouch. Advised to talke Losec and or do endoscopy with surgeon present. As I have Omapradex at home, I have begun to take it at least once a day and, B"H (Thank G-D) the past three days I have not vomited at all.
The Pesach foods can be quite enticing to the palete and I have indulged in small amounts.
Today I went to my GP to get the results of the 24 Hour Urine results and to arrange for blood tests after the holiday. I also weighed myself on the calibrated scale. I was so afraid that I had gained but B"H I lost and now weigh 90 Kilo. A slow loss - but always a loss. I am aware that I am not following exactly the "do's and don'ts"of WLS. However I went into this surgery because of the GERD I was experi-encing and suffering. Anything I lose would be and is a bonus. I hope I will learn more proper eating habits for life and whatever I lose will stay off forever.

Pesach Seder Tonight

Apr 17, 2008

I will be sleeping and eating at a friend's with her hubby and two kids. I cannot eat matza, lettuce or too much grape juice. Pesach, for me is a very nerve-wrcking time for many reasons.
Lately I have been vomiting almost every day -even from foods that I ate before without any problem. I am not sure if the vomiting is because I eat too fast or too much but I am afraid of a stricture. And then after I vomit, I want  my B&J coffee ice cream to soothe my throat !
I did not weigh myself at the doc's this week. I have been busy shopping for the holiday and I figured that one day during Chol HaMoed I would go up to town to the doc and weigh and ask for the two 24- hour- Urine results (for the endocrinologist) and arrange to do blood work-up for after Pesach; as well as a trip to the bank to pull out some cash.
My clothes are feeling looser and every now and then someone will notice that I appear to have lost weight and actually say something. Yet not as many people have commented/noticed as I would have expected.
Oh, well such is life !

Two Months have Already Gone by

Apr 08, 2008

It has now been over two months since my surgery and I am learning (most of the time) to pay attention to how I chew and eat. But sometimes I am stupid and then I suffer the comsequences.
In my medical clinic the scale showed 91K. Who knows, comes Rosh HaShanna maybe I'll decide to change my goal weight?
The endocrinologist whom I recently saw, (I have hypothy-roidism and take Eltroxin) asked me to do two different 24 hour urine tests. One for calcium and phosphorous and their absorption. The other for catchalamines due to a 2.6 mass on my left adrenal that was found during a CT.
It took me a while to get the hang of peeing into a "collection box" without mis-aiming! I brought in one specimen and hope to do the other over the weekend.

Am I Getting Cured or What?

Mar 27, 2008

I'm working real hard to get in 2L of liquid a day and eat my 70-80g of protein. I drink at least one protein drink a day, sometimes two.
But I have noticed that in the toileting department, my stools are usually yellow which when I googled "yellow stool" it has to do with malabsorption. Considering that I only have 80cm of small intestines, I'm not surprised.
The scale is moving and the numbers are dropping ever so slowly.
Most of my skirts are with elastic so they still fit. However my  tops are showing provocative curves.
The other day aftyer getting out of the shower and standing naked in front of the mirror, I thought, "Aside from the rolls of abdominal blubber, my face looks cute."  I don't think I have thought of myself as cute since seeing a photo of myself at age five!

A New Weight for Me.....

Mar 23, 2008

Really I had a clinic appointment only next week but as I was in the hospital yesterday to visit a woman from the Hebrew forum who had a revision to RNY, the surgeon said he'd save me a trip and examined me!
On the scale on the Surgery Department, I weighed 93 k. After my 1st surgery, SRVG, I lost weight from 120k down to 92 1/2 kafter 8 months. Granted that w/my RNY, I started at 101k but it has been a long time since I've seen "low" numbers.
My next appointment will be after Pesach on May 5. My dream is to weigh 88k which is the lowest weight I remember weighing. That was shortly after the birth of my daughter who was 22 in December.

I Now Weigh 97 K

Mar 03, 2008

I was at my surgeon today as he wanted to check my incision. It is healing well. I can now just put a dry gauze on if I want.
He weighed me and I am down to 97k. That is an average of a kilo a week. Don't know if it will keep up (or down) like this for the duration of my losing but it is better than my other experiences.
I mentioned my frequent diarhea and the doc told me that as I had such horrific adhesions, he bypassed most of my intestines and I only have 80cm and my surgery is like a DS in that respect. Well that explains a lot!
My next appointment at the surgeon is in a month.
I hope to go back to my volunteer job at the library as of tomorrow. I need to get out but I might not stay as long as I used to in the past for my 1st time back in a month.

Food and I are Learning to get Along

Feb 25, 2008

I can eat cottage cheese and I found this yummy 5% smoked yellow cheese.Yogurts do well, too. Pureed soups and of course liquids.
However for the past four days, queasiness has invaded my life as well as my poor food choices (green peas mixed in with my mashed potatoes, or thin slices of deli meat) causing me to upchuck shortly after.
I have an appointment with the surgeon next Monday. I am concerned if I have a stricture as before the op I had a prblem with my esophagus and narrowing due to the VBG.
