I am 51 years old and have been aware of being obese since the 4th grade. I have struggled with obesity and compulsive overeating most of my life. This behavior has led to other physical complications that have brought me to this segway in my life.
Contemplating the surgery was not easy because I had a hard time imagining how I would live without eating being a focal point of my life. I grew up in an environment where social interaction centered around food, so every get together was a banquet, every holiday an overindulgence.
This surgery and subsequent change in how I live is not a second chance at life, I have had a lifetime of second chances. To me, this is a second life.
