6 Month Follow up

Oct 05, 2010

Boy time flies.  In September, I had my 6 month follow up.  Things went well.  I was at 206.5 which is down from my highest weight pre surgery of 305.  My Body Fat percentage was 17.9 down from 20.2 in June.

I contiue to try to get to my goal of 15% Body Fat Percentage and a weight of 195 pounds.  However, not all is well.  I seem to be struggling with depression.  Not fun.  I realize that the surgery, change in hormones, etc. play a large part in this.  I will continue to work on it.  If necessary, I will visit my PCP.  However, when I exercise regularly, I always feel better.

Endrocrinologist Appointment

Jun 08, 2010

On the 9th of June, I will be meeting with my Endrocrinologist.  Since I met with him last time (5 days after surgery) I have quit taking insulin.  I have also lost about 60 pounds since he last saw me.  I think he will be pleased.  He is the one who suggested I consider WLS to control my diabetes.  Boy he nailed this one.

This may be the last time I need to see him.  Another little WOW moment.

Summertime

Jun 01, 2010

My first summer after WLS.  Well, I am excited to do some things I could not or did not do before.  For example, I would like to go horseback riding.  I could not before because there was a 250 weight limit.  I want to do more hiking and biking.  Did not do this before because I did not have the energy or desire.  Now, I look forward to ways to be active.

Long term goals.

This might sound silly, but I would like to do 2 things I have never been able to do before:
1. 10 chin ups
2.  Climb a rope like they used to have in gym class.

5K Fun

May 24, 2010

The Fargo Marathon 5k was a lot of fun.  There were many of us that had WLS that participated.  Not only WLS people, but doctors, nurses and other support staff that have worked with us before, during and after our surgery!

Dr. Garcia at Merit Care in Fargo proposed the idea and his staff along with rehab staff worked together to make it happen.   They organized practice schedules and routes and gave us great information and education on running.  Some ran, some walked, some did a little of each.

Next year, I would like to participate in the Marathon relay.  It is only a little over 10 K, but would be a lot of fun.

5K coming up

May 18, 2010

Friday,

Many of us in the Fargo/Moorhead Area will be participating in the Fargo Marathon 5K.  There are a group of WLS patients that will be starting out together.  We have trained as a group and will go at different paces.  I have been training to do a Run/Walk.  However, my DW (dear wife) wanted to participate also.

She had not trained so I will go at her pace.  I was very touched that she would support my efforts by joining the race.  Whether one finishes first or last is not important, it is that one sets a goal and achieves it.  This will be fun.

On another note, last week we had a WLS get together at one of the Moxie Javas.  Thanks Kelly for organizing.  It was a lot of fun.  I am looking forward to the next.

Setting small goals

Apr 26, 2010

I have set some long term goals, like a BMI of 24, maintaining a weight of 180, but until today, I did not set small goals.  I am trying to lose 5 pounds per week and so far have been able to make that.  I realize that may change, but it gives me something to shoot for.

What happens if I don't make a goal?  Well, then I will need to figure out why.  Did I do the things I needed to do or was the goal unrealistic?

I am starting to get more comments on my body change, not so much on weight loss, but that I look different.  It's a good thing.  It helps keep me motivated to try to lose more weight.  I know they say WLS is only a tool, but what a powerful tool if used properly!

Halfway there

Apr 19, 2010

Today is the halfway point of my weight loss goal.  I started out at 305 and have a goal of 180.  My halfway point is 242.5 or 62.5 pounds.  Actually, I was at 242.6, but I guess that is close enough.  I know that the second half may not go as fast, but I know if I continue to do the things I am doing, I will be successful.

I focus on the following:

100 ounces of water per day.
80-100 grams of protein per day.
750-800 calories per day.
60 minutes of exercise per day.
Weighing my portions and
Logging my food and activity.

It feels good to hit somewhat of a milestone.  I look forward to continuing to improve my health and well being.

Under 250

Apr 11, 2010

I was not quite at 250 when I left for San Jose, but now am at 248 pounds.  I tried to eat the best I could in San Jose.  Went to San Francisco on Thursday and had supper at Fisherman's Wharf.  As ususal, I ate too fast and got very uncomfortable. (Would have barfed if I could have).

I still struggle with eating too fast.  I will have to work on that.  That sounds like a goal for me.

People are starting to comment on my weight loss.  It must be drastic enough that they are curious.  I have no problem telling them that I had WLS.  I will continue to move toward my goal of a BMI of 24.

Short Term Goal

Apr 05, 2010

I am trying to make a short term goal and it looks like I may fall a little short.  Back on March 8th, I set a goal to lose 32 pounds by April 8th.  I will be presenting at a conference in San Jose on the 8th and wanted to be at 250 pounds.  Well, I am at 255 right now and that leaves me two days to lose it.

It may happen, but I don't think so, as I have not been losing that fast.  That is ok.  I am going to be close and will enjoy flying without being quite so squeezed into those little airline seats.  I don't care who you are, they are not very big.

Anyway, things are moving along.  I still am impatient, but trying to cope.

Somewhat of a milestone

Mar 26, 2010

Today I weighed in under 260 pounds for the first time in at least 3 years.  Since I began the WLS track, I have lost 45 pounds.  I am starting to notice that my clothes are too big.  Nancy and I will go window shopping so I can try on a few things and see what size I really should be in.

Not that I care about clothes, that is Nancy's dept., but it is fun to see that my body shape is changing.

I have continued to work out twice a day when I can and at least once a day every day.  I know that is helping my energy level and weight loss.

I will be travelling again to Albertville next week, so I am already planning my meals.
