I came home today to find a notice of attempted delivery from Purolater. I have to pick it up tomorrow. Could this be THE envelope? I can't imagine that it could be anything else since I haven't ordered anything.... But at the same time, it's just been about 2 weeks and that would seem awfully fast... Ugh. I have to wait til tomorrow to find out what it is. I think it will kill me! Stef

Some straight talk about protein shakes, please! I know that once people have wls, they typically have to take in protein shakes. I was wondering how often you have them? I've seen lots of different kinds out there. Which are your favourites? How long does a container last? Anything you can share about them is appreciated. I have seen very vague info on them. Stef

I wonder if there is a good endocrinologist that would help you and sign the papers, deeming it "medically necessary". My family physician was also very reluctant to sign the papers, and referred me to an endo and he was very nice and supportive (surprisingly!) Otherwise I say then, get a new family doctor and start again. It doesn't sound very promising. Stef

1. Are you a dog person or a cat person? I'm definitely a dog person although I've recently taken on a cat. I have a border collie and a golden retriever. I have a cat that was a stray and came through my classroom window! I have a rabbit too. 2. Do you have any children? No. I only borrow them I'm a teacher. 3. If you won just $10,000 dollars on the lotto what would you do with it? Pay off visa and buy some new living room furniture 4. Do you have a hobby or a collection of things? Hobbies yes but I try not to collect too much. I am trying to get over pack-rat-itis! 5. Were/are either of your parents/siblings considered overweight? My mother. Very generational. I'm the four generation of obese women on my maternal side.

Topic: RE: Looking at Out of Country Surgery....OHIP Question
Welcome Lori. I'm just starting my journey as well! Start talking to your doctor and get the process in motion. I think a BMI over 50 will be substantial in getting approval. Even if you don't have alot of comorbidities, go through the process. I am doing this myself right now. It might take an appeal or two, but we'll get there Stefani

Yes but I want out of country coverage, so they are alot more picky about that these days. Doc says they have gotten much stricter. No huge comorbidities that is the problem. Back/knee pain, urinary stress incontinence, high cholesterol, nothing major. I do have a family history of heart attacks so that is something that is serious for me. Well since the endo has approved me, I think she will now work on helping me get approved. I just think she was fearful about being the one to sign the paper or something. Stef

Topic: RE: My Update
Hi There. The last time I posted I was super frustrated. When I approached my doctor about this surgery, she looked at me right away and said that I looked like I "wasn't heavy enough for this surgery". The doctor said that she would not approve me but would send me to an endocrinologist who could make the decision if it was "medically necessary" for me to get it done. (She didn't know anything about it even being done in Ontario! when she basically told me that I probably wouldn't qualify for out of country coverage (my first choice). She told me that the endocrinologist would only approve those that had a BMI of around 50-55 because that seems to be what OHIP would approve since they have tightened up their acceptance policy to pay the surgery. ************ So I did go this week to the endocrinologist appointment. I was extremely nervous since I was 2 lbs short for that BMI of 50. It was so ridiculous that a co-worker suggested that I carry a few rolls of loonies or something so that I could add more weight to the scale, knowing how frustrated I was. The endocrinologist turned out to be much more interested in me, supportive and inquisitive than my family doctor. He was so nice and kind and just really seemed to understand my frustrations of being obese throughout my life time. That 2 lb shortage ended up not mattering...because I ended up being an inch shorter than I THOUGHT that I was...so with the shorter height, my BMI more than qualifies! So the endocrinologist filled out the paperwork and is sending it in. The only thing that makes me nervous about that is that of course, I can't add my personal letter or photos or anything like that which I've heard can help....but I guess I'll save that for the appeal should I be denied. I'm crossing my fingers for now, Stef

The doctor needs to fill it out. Your doctor should talk to you all about your medical history and problems related to your obesity. Your doctor should fill this all in. Stef

It's approved in Canada but still considered a bit experimental I believe. It takes a LONG time before OHIP will approve anything and RNY has been around for a long, long time, but not the pacemaker. Stef

Yes Ohip covers gastric bypass.... but now I'm confused because it says you are having or want to have RNY with Dr. Starr in your profile so I would think that you would know this already. Is there something that I'm missing that you aren't able to communicate? Stef

Topic: RE: question on the OHIP form
You can check the NO box on this one! CritiCall Ontario ensures that critically ill patients are directed to hospitals with available specialists, beds, and critical care resources. It basically would be if you were dying and had to get this service done as not to immediately die (critical care). Stef

Topic: RE: Percentage of excess weight loss
He's being realistic. That seems to be the common amount but you have to remember, that exercise can greatly improve that. That's the difference between those who lose 75 lbs in a year, versus those who lose 75 lbs in 6 months. What you put into it, you'll get out of it. Stef

She would be referring to the LapBand which is currently not covered under ohip. Dr. Starr and the MIS group, do most of their surgeries laproscopically (it says so on the website). stef

That's what I hear too. I don't know if it is that she doesn't want the "responsibility" or that she's uninformed. I'm unsure what her reasoning is. At least with the endo I have hope, because I get the distinct feeling she wouldn't sign the paper without me having major comorbidities. Stef

In theory yes she could...but she is sending me to see if it is "medically necessary" or whatever. Personally I think it is alot of garbage and if things don't work out with me with this route, I'll find a new doctor. Plain and simple. Stef
