4 Months since surgery : halfway there !

Jul 08, 2010

WOW - today is exactly 4 months since my surgery and I am down 72lbs (5 stone 2lbs) - (33 kilos) !!

This month I have lost 11lbs and am now exactly half way towards my total loss target of 144lbs (10 stone 4lbs) (66 kilos) which will take me to the middle of the ideal BMI for my height.

I've been tracking my progress against the EWL tracker on this site and here's how I am doing so far :

100% EWL - 93.0%       (16lbs short of 100%)
90% EWL  - 96.5%       ( 8lbs short of 90%)
80% EWL  - 99.6%       ( 1 lb short of 80%)
65% EWL  - 104.8%     (11lbs OVER 65%)

EXERCISE :
I've been on holiday for the first two weeks of this month, so exercise was really confined to walking - not too bad - I managed to clock up 5,000 steps most days and 12,000 on one day.

I joined a gym for the summer which will be good as it's currently in the high 40's/low 50's outside so anything more than a short walk outside is just too much.

I've stepped up the pace of my squash games and am now playing against my husband too which is great - I usually aim to burn 600 cals in as little time as possible and each time I'm playing I can do this quicker.

I'm also getting better at Pilates and have noticed that we are beginning to do more intensive workouts during my classes.

At home I'm doing some pilates on my reformer, and am also walking up the stairs of my appt block - starting with 10 storeys to begin with but aiming to get to 34 floors over the next month or so.  I've also bought a crazy fit machine which is a bit like a power plate so am using this to help tone up, as well as slendertone for my abs and arms - not strictly exercise - but I'm hoping to tone up as much as possible as I'd love to avoid plastics if possible (but think that I will need some in the end).

Next week I plan to do a RPM class and also body combat class which I really love.  I've also bought a few books on body sculpting which I will use to build a new exercise plan in my gym at the appt.

FOOD

Eating is good - I'm focussing on good quality protein and trying not to rely on protein shakes too much as I would prefer to get my protein from food.  Still not had steak, but apart from that am eating most things.  I enjoy my daily skimmed latte but cannot do any form of syrup or sugary drinks as they make me feel terrible as I can't cope with the sugar rush.

Am tracking my protein, carbs and cals daily - I'm tending to have 80+g protein, 50-60g carbs and about 800-950 cals per day - this seems to be working well for me - though I'm still low on energy some days.  Am still weighing my food which seems to work well for me.

On holiday I had a few treats - eg 1 profiterole, 2 small scoops of ice-cream - and really enjoyed this - but don't plan on having too much sweet stuff for a long while yet.

HAIR - is falling out by the handful - but is to be expected - just hope I don't go bald !!

DRESS SIZE - UK 16-18 depending on what I am wearing - Not worn these sizes for a long time.  There are plenty of sales on at the moment so I plan on stocking up on a few staple items in smaller sizes to keep me going over the summer.

Well - that's it for now - will post some pictures later.

I LOVE THIS SLEEVE !

Yay - 70 lbs lost (5 stone!)

Jul 01, 2010

How exciting - this morning I jumped on the scales to see my new weight of 229 lbs which is a massive drop of 70lbs or 5 stone since my surgery on 9th March 2010 - This is the most I have ever lost and I am so pleased.

I joined a new gym today so am planning on trying out some new exercise classes - will start with RPM and Body Combat both of which I have done before and really enjoyed.

Now I'm back from holiday I'm tracking my food again and here's what I ate today :

B : 30 g Bran Buds and 2 fl oz Skim Milk
S : Grande Skinny Misto
L : 1/2 Chicken breast and garlic sauce
S : 3 slices ham
D : 3 slices bacon and 1 oz cauliflower cheese
S : 1/2 apple

Typically I'm having between 700-900 cals per day, at least 70g protein, about 40 g of carbs and 20-30g of fat - some days more and some days less depending on what I'm doing.  I do try and weigh my food when I can just so I can more accurately keep track of quantities.

I'm also drinking at least 2 liters water and taking all my vits.

I exercise at least 4 x per week - 2 games squash, 2 pilates reformer sessions plus exercise at home - Wii, Pilates, Gym, Stability Ball.  I live on the 31st floor of an apartment block so my goal is to be able to walk up all of the floors - so far I can do 6 without stopping (to be fair I only started this morning with this target).

Am now in much smaller clothes - typically UK size 18 (US 16) down from a UK 24-26.

So I am almost halfway on my journey - I have another 74lbs to go.

Onwards and Downwards !

Back from UK & France

Jun 27, 2010

Arrived back from France in the early hours of this morning (3 am), somewhat shattered as we had to get up at 5.30 am to drop people to the station, then go back to the Gite and clean it, pack, and then drop the hire car off before catching the TGV to Paris.  Caught the cab from hell in Paris to take us to the airport - he was all over the road and narrowly avoided two accidents on the motorway !

Flight home was fine - albeit I'm not keen on airplane food - I had ordered a seafood meal which was overcooked and dry.

Whilst I was away I managed to lose 2lbs - not the greatest of a loss, but I struggled to eat enough protein and know that I had too many carbs on some days.

Typical food was :
Breakfast : 1 egg omelette - usually with mushrooms or cheese
Lunch : Salad with meat or cheese or an omelette
Dinner : Fish or meat with some veggies or a selection of pate and cheese with biscuits and local hams

I also had quite a lot of pate and cheese with biscuits, some fruit and the occassional ice-cream and/or pudding - I think I had 3 in total which is good as I was away almost 2 weeks.  I don't think that I drank nearly enough water either.

Managed to do lots of exercise walking around Paris and little towns in Provence and the Ardeche which was good and on most days I managed to get in 5000 steps at least.

Did some clothes shopping in the UK and was pleasantly surprised at how much slimmer I am - I also managed to fit into a UK size 16 trousers (14 US I think) - which was fab - particularly as I thought they were size 18 !    My size 18 trousers which I bought as my next size down trousers - only 5 weeks ago - are now too big ! - Boy is this going to be an expensive few months !

So now I'm back in Dubai I can get my food shopping done and get back to eating mostly protein, plus I am back exercising - did Pilates this afternoon and have squash planned for the morning.

5 more pounds to lose til I hit a loss of 70lbs which is 5 stone - I am determined to do this before 9th July which will be 4 months since surgery.  I've never managed to lose this much ever before so it's a great target to aim for - before I start focussing on getting below the 200 pound mark !

This sleeve rocks !

3 Month Weigh In - 61 lbs since surgery

Jun 08, 2010

So today is my 3 month surgerversary and I'm down 61lbs to 238 lbs - which is exactly 4 stone 5lbs or 27.6kgs' for those in metric ! - This takes me to a great weight of exactly 17 stone which I haven't been in a long, long time.

This takes my BMI to 37.3 down from 47 which is fab.

I also took my body measurements recently and again today and am losing inches which is also great and hopefully means that I am toning up as I am losing.

This week I've shaken up my diet a bit more - I've added in some healthy carbs - a good bran cereal for breakfast or half a tortilla for lunch and the occassional bit of fruit - as I was struggling to get in any real fibre and feeling constipated without.  I'm also getting in about 800-900 cals per day and 60+ g of protein per day without having to have shakes - which is good.  This seems to be working as I've lost 3 lbs this week alone.

I've sorted out my wardrobe also and have given away lots of clothes - not just those that don't fit and are too large - but also those which I bought just because they fit me and not because they necessarily suited me - this feels very liberating.  I also took some of my favourite trousers and tops to the tailor yesterday and he is going to take them in for a fraction of the cost of buying new - this feels like the right thing to do - some of the clothes I've only been in for a month or so - and it was lovely when the tailor said "mam, I think you have lost a lot of weight".

Will need to buy a new swimsuit though as mine is not giving the support it needs and I don't want to do any flashing !

Am off on holiday next week to the UK and then the South of France - am busy planning what food I need to take with me to help with the journey - have a seafood lunch booked for on the plane, but remember that Emirates usually do a very carb heavy breakfast so will take a few snacks with me for the flight.

This will be the first time I have seen my family since surgery so am looking forward to their comments too.

According to my tracker (EWL v's Actual Weight Loss) I am at 92% of the target to lose 100% of my extra weight in 18 months (this works out at about 20 lbs variance).  Of course I was hoping to be at 100% of the target - who wouldn't ! - but I know that I am shaping up, getting fit and just LOVING THIS NEW SLEEVE !

Will post photos later.

Nutrition & Pilates Reformer

May 29, 2010

I've tried 2 new things this week : Pilates and Nutrition.

I saw a nutritionist to help me review my eating plan and in particular my lack of energy.  The problem is that whilst I generally have enough energy to do my day-to-day activities and exercise - I'm usually fairly wiped out at the middle of the day often resulting in me having to take extended naps to get through the day (1-2 hours).  She's given me a whole list of supplements to take - in particular my B vitamins which hopefully will give me the energy I need.

She reviewed my food diary and thought that this was good, but suggested I have fish more often - which I'm happy to try - with the exception of salmon and tuna which I still can't tolerate.

So my favourite fish meal is grilled or oven baked parrot or hammour fish, topped with a home-made tomato salsa (tinned toms, onions, herbs & spices - reduced until it's a thick sauce) topped with a sprinkling of grated cheese which is grilled til it's bubbling - it's delicious.  As a bonus - hubby likes it too which makes it much easier on the cooking front.

I've also taken up Pilates - using a reformer machine.  This is the machine which looks like a medieval torture tool - like a stretching rack - LOL! - it's the one which Ruby tried on her show when she got all emotional and tearful.

Whilst the machine looks quite complicated, it's fairly easy to use and you are able to do all sorts of exercises on it specifically to target different body parts.  It's really hard work, but also very good for your abs and core muscles.  The class is just 5 people and the instructor is able to watch over you and put you in the right position if you stray !  The class lasts an hour and boy can you feel that you've worked your core muscles afterwards !

I've been to 2 classes this week, plus played squash twice and been to the gym 2 times - so all in all a good week.

Almost 11 week out

May 22, 2010

It's hard to believe that I am only 11 weeks out from surgery (almost) - as I am feeling so good.  So far I'm down 55lbs which is great.

I've found a new hobby which I love - EXERCISE - who would have thought I would ever say that !

I started exercising in the gym at 4 weeks out on
the static bike, progressing to use the x-trainer and treadmill in the 5th week, and adding in lifting weights when I was cleared to do so at week 6.

Since those early days I've moved up the pace and duration of my workout and now do some form of exercise at least 4 times per week - sometimes more.

My new found exercise is squash - I really enjoy it - though have to say I found that I was hurting in parts I never knew I had after the first week !  It's one of the best intense workouts for me.  I've also taken up in-line skating which is good fun though this will end soon as it's becoming way to hot here - we tend to have really hot summers 45 C as a mimimum for the next 3 months - so I'll have to move all of my exercise indoors.

I've also made a new purchase - a monitoring tool - it's made by the same company as the FitBugg which was used in the Biggest Loser.  The tool allows me to accurately monitor all of my activity I do during the day including how long I exercise and at what intensity, how many steps I take, how many calories my body is burning and how long and the quality of my sleep - it's fascinating.  All of this is uploaded on-line and compared to my food diary so that I can start tracking progress and increasing the intensity of my workouts.

So here are some interesting facts from the last few days :

Typical Actual Calories Burned
Sleeping :               1.4 cals per minute
Reading/TV :          2 cals per minute
Gym Weights :       3 cals per minute
Squash Game :       7.4 cals per minute
X Trainer :            12.4 cals per minute

On average I burn at least 3000 cals per day and am eating a max of 800 cals per day leaving a calorie deficit of 2200 cals per day.  I also manage to do at least 5000 steps each day.

Will keep using this and see how it goes - so far I am very impressed and it's helping me to stay active - especially as it measured my personal best of sitting down/sleeping for 15 hours the other day ! (YIKES - in fairness it was my rest day - but even so ..........)

That's all for now.

Protein Shakes

May 12, 2010

At only 2 months out, it's nigh on impossible to eat enough food to get all of my protein in - so shakes play a large part in my day.  I always have 1 shake, and if possible try to get in another or some protein water to help up the numbers if my food intake has not been so great.

My favourite shakes are : Nitro-tech Pro, Hardcore Series - for 130 cals you get 25g of protein, 1.5g fat, 3g carbs
Cookies & Cream
Chocolate & Caramel
Vanilla Milkshake

I make all of them up with water and ice-cubes for a delicicious protein shake.  As it takes me almost an hour to drink, I can't glug down any old disgusting shake (as I could have done before my op & as per my brothers instructions - "it's just protein, get it down you ")

If you live in Dubai, I got them at Nutrition World on the ground floor of Dubai Mall and next to Choitrims on Al Wasl Road (Burj Al Arab end) in the small nutrition shop next to the pharmacy.  They come in 2lb and 4lb tubs - the 4lb tub is about 320 AED - expensive but tasty.

Eating to fuel you body - especially when not hungry

May 12, 2010

So, today I've realised how hard it is to eat to fuel your body, particularly when you are running around all day and frankly just don't feel hungry (I must admit I never thought I would say that before !).

So here's what I've eaten today :

B : 2 slices bacon & 1 fried egg - brown sauce    - eaten at about 11 am
L : 1 chicken kebab stick and 10 french fries     - eaten on the run, in a Lebanese restaurant at 4pm  (I have 3/4 of it in the fridge as take-out)
D : 1/2 cup chicken breast, 1 tsp peas/carrots   - eaten at 9pm
     and some gravy
S : 1 x protein shake                                           - 6pm

So this only gives me 635 cals and 77g of protein.

I should have some more calories, but am not hungry at all and the thought of eating more is not appealing.  I could have another shake - but it's 11pm now and it takes me a good hour to drink a shake.

I know I had breakfast late, frankly I wasn't hungry before then and could only manage water up until then as I was feeling a bit queasy today.

So I guess my lesson is that I need to think of a way to get my protein and calories in a bit earlier in the day, as leaving it til this late, is too late to play catch up.

On a more positive note, my lunch cost 25 AED so if it makes 4 meals that's less than 6 1/2 AED per meal which works out at approx £1.20/$1.75 a meal - can't be bad.  Though I always feel awful asking for 3/4 of my meal to be put in a box as take-out !

Will do better tomorrow !

2 Months Out - Progress

May 09, 2010

OK - so 2 months and 1 day out and my stats are as follows :

HW : 299
SW : 289
CW : 247

So that's a whopping 52 lbs down from my start and 42 lbs since surgery - this sleeve rocks !

I have been tracking my progress aginst the EWL charts on here and my progress is as follows :

EWL (%'age of excess weight expected to be lost in 18 months)
EWL        My Progress
100%       - 94% of target
90%        - 96.5% of target
80%        - 98.3% of target
65%        - 102% of target

Whilst I would have liked to be at 100% of the 100% EWL now, I have to say that looks quite unrealistic - as it would mean losing 29lbs in the second month which I think is a bit too high.

So, I'll keep on tracking my progress and reporting against it each month and see where I go from here.

Onwards and Downwards

Welcome to the Group

May 07, 2010

A big welcome to those of you who have joined this Group.

I hope that we are able to grow our group over time and share ideas and experiences etc.

I want to set up a regular support group which will initially start in Dubai - currently 3 of us meet up over a coffee but I have ideas of having bigger monthly events with guest speakers etc.

Let me know if you think this is a good idea and I'll see what I can start up.  If you have recommendations for speakers who would like to participate then please let me know too.

Thank you.
